Herby can I join the Gabe Olesani fan club?

I was not as concerned by his offensive deficiencies. His real problems where at the defensive end.

Still a work in progress, but I think you will see major improvement in his Jr/Sr years, getting in the game for the little bit yesterday is a major step considering he got essentially no PT of meaningful action last year.

Just for him to see the speed of a real team will be good, he is still not ready to have any real impact at the BT level, but games against PSU/NE/Purdue/Wisky will be good opportunities to get him as much PT as possible in spots. Still not ready to compete against big-time competition, but if Basabe's ankle problems can't go away by Sunday, I still would prefer potential of Gabe over the alternative, but not at the expense of a victory. He still needs more time, but I still like what I have seen from him this season.

I am not saying Gabe will never be ready to compete in the Big Ten, but it was painfully obvious that he is not ready now.

Olesani dominated Zeller, you all hate Gabe, and think you smarter than fran, obviously you all hate the hawks, and coach

Definitely agree, he needs to be on the floor though to see where he is at against top flight competition. Gabe is improving, but yesterday showed he still has some work.

We need gabe to develop a little quicker now if basabe is hurt and can't give the solid minutes he is capable of. Anyone else hear the announcers say that gabe looked lost and overmatched. I get that he was and I was one that would argue with herby but I kind of felt bad for gabe when they said it because he is so young in his basketball career being his 4th or5th yr even playing.

I doubt Fran would let me into practice. I think the current staff will get the job done. I was just pointing out they still have a lot of work to do. Much more than some posters seem to think.

I agreed with what the announcers said. It was true, why would hearing the truth make you feel bad?

I felt bad because what they said wasn't really good announcing. Good announcing is diagnosing why he is playing poorly. Saying someone is overmatched basically means he doesn't belong on the court. The last iowa player I know of that was truly overmatched and didn't belong in the b1g was lil lick. Gabe struggled and needs a lot of work but he will become a serviceable b1g player. To me that means he belongs on the court.

Gabe should have started. Honestly. They put him into the game a little cold, and then before he could catch up, he got pulled. I mean damn, Zeller ate the rest of our defenders alive, Gabe could have done better than anyone else. He probably shoots better than McCabe too.

From what I saw, Gabe did not belong on the court against Indiana. The fact that he didn't return after his brief outing make me think Fran agreed with me.

Again, I think Gabe will grow to be a contributor on this team. The fact is he is not ready yet to face Big Ten competition. Some of you say that the only way to get ready for that is to get game time. I think he has plenty of room to grow in practice before he gets significant game time against good Big Ten teams.

BDB, he more than got scored on a few times. He got exposed. It isn't his fault he isn't ready yet.

I agree that he probably shouldn't be on the court in important minutes but as long as basabe is hurt we need him to be on the court. Mccabe doesn't have the athleticism that gabe does and at least he can then give us something that we lack without basabe...some athleticism.

I am definitely not on herby's side that gabe is the greatest since sliced bread...but without basabe I feel he can fill a need. And I think his mistakes will be ok over mccabe's lack of ability athletically staying with some players (such as a zeller or watford). Gabe will make mistakes but his athleticism will allow him to make up for some of those as he learns (kind of like oladipo being able to over play). But obviously woodbury being able to stay on the court as much as possible is most important so we don't have to rely on gabe or mccabe for more than they are capable of.

Athleticism is worthless if it is out of position. I will take Mcabe over Gabe at this point. I hope next season that isn't my pick.

Gabe was overmatched, the announcers were correct. He has the ability to get to a point where he won't be overmatched, unlike Lil' Lick, but he WAS overmatched.

Were the Cyclones overmatched against Yale in the first half yesterday or were they just playing poorly?
