You're Brian Ferentz and Phil Parker...

Isn't 5 DB's a dime package?

5 DBs is nickle just like there are 5 cents in a nickel. 6 DBs is dime. If you have some studs like Kirksey who was really a big safety you could play 4 down linemen 3 big safeties at linebacker and 4 dbs.

I would love to have some really fast 225 pound type safeties at Iowa

What are your game plans for PSU?

If I'm Phil, I'm going to employ a lot of nickel formations with Rugamba, Jackson and OJ and eliminate the huge mismatch of Bower out on an island by himself against Barkley coming out of the backfield. Our DBs typically tackle pretty well, so I'm not as worried about Barkley on straight ahead runs....it's his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield in space that concerns me. The 2nd thing that would concern me if I'm Phil is McSorley's ability with his legs. So make sure the DL isn't as concerned with getting to him as they are in staying in their lanes and containing him. Limit man-to-man coverage in the secondary so as not to get your back turned and have McSorley take off for huge gains.

If I'm Brian, since we're at home, we can take more chances with a young QB. So I'm taking some deep shots early when I WANT to rather than when I HAVE to when they can tee off on Stanley. Also, I'm doing that on early downs so as to give him a better chance. Maybe go with our Pitt gameplan to a certain extent where we came out in shotgun nearly every play with CJ. I don't think this is a game we can hope to win 14-13 like Michigan because PSU has more ability for the big play....so this is a game where we're going to have to try to put some points up and that ain't gonna happen via stretch left and stretch right.

Ultimately I think the first team to 27 wins.

Hawks put together another Kinnick Classic under the lights against a Top 5 team and win 27-24.

Their offense is so explosive that I think we do need to play zone. I do wonder if we shouldn't play a lot of nickel to get more speed. I don't think it'd be a bad idea to spy McSorley, but I don't know if our lb's have the speed to do so. But, I think McSorley is the guy to game plan around. He does damage with his legs off of faking it to Barkley. I don't think you "spy" a running back. And McSorley is good with his arm. They can go deep and they have good TE play. I think we have to blitz in obvious passing downs to get him to throw it early and to keep them from going deep. And have the "spy" double team the TE if they pass in a non-obvious situation.

On offense...throw deep, throw screens and then run. I think we've got the speed to trade punches with their defense. If we try ball control, we'll lose.

Ironically I thought about that on the way into work today. The 5 DB's being the nickel.

We match up better against PsU than NT. So I shut down the run, If Im Parker. Make their QB beat us.

On offense, Hide where we are going to run. Open up that pass game. Stanley is going to connect on some deep balls.

PsU is going to go home crying Saturday night.

Would love it, but I just don't see it. P$U is the new cash cow for B1G. Any momentum Iowa attains will be quashed quickly.

The only way this is close is if PSU decides to go back to 1980's football with double TE, FB, and try to pound the ball. Basically, try to use our offense. This is a reason why we matched up with them so well over the years. Ditto with MSU, and UM. Their offense was similar to ours.

I think PSU is 2nd in Big10 for sacks, so our OL better be ready. Hopefully Wadley isn't hurt too bad as he's going to be our only offense, and usually is.

I could see this game being a shoot out and that would be our best chance. I think PSU runs circles around us. Just too many athletes and our D, while decent, isn't built for players like this (see TN, Stanford, PSU last year)

Do you not think we'll be able to pass? And Wadley is our offense? Have you been watching the same games I have? Obviously he's important, but the way I see it the pass game has been and will continue to be the most important component of our offense this year, at least until the run blocking improves.

We need to show the same offensive play calling we ran in the ISU game. Throwing to Kulick, and 8 other receivers. Defensively, I have no idea on how to slow down Barkley. IF we load the box and he gets through, he's gone. I hope they watched last years game and came up with a awesome game plan.

I don't know what we'll be able to do. We haven't hit a deep pass yet, and you can bet any team playing Iowa won't respect that aspect until we actually connect on one.

Wadley has been our offense for two years. We don't beat Michigan without him. We don't beat ISU this year without him. He's a special player.

If I'm PSU, I'm selling out on the run (duh). And when you get Iowa in 2nd/3rd and long, you blitz and if I had to track one player on offense, it's Wadley. With the blitz you know the QB is going to get rid of the ball quickly, so it won't be a deep pass. Who else on the field has the ability to make guys miss and create a huge play?

I agree that our passing offense will be the key to this game. If we can protect the QB, and he can make good decisions there will be open players.

One thing I hope not to see this weekend is PSU defenders pointing to the spot where the play is going.

The defensive plan is more important than the offensive plan, as PSU 's offense is definitely their stronger group.

Offensively, just do what you should be doing all the time- mix things up. Run some out of passing looks/downs, throw some out of run looks/downs. Scoring is not optional!

Defensively, I like the idea of nickel being the base. Then go to dime and quarter as needed. Bower should probably just rest up for the next game... But I would be really aggressive. Blitz about 2 of every 3 plays, from different spots. Mix the coverage behind that- sometimes man but more zone. Hell, in "and long" situations I'd play dime and might bring a corner blitz from both sides- sometimes a "typical Iowa blitz" with soft coverage to allow a quick dumpoff and other times press so we get some qb hits if not sacks.

Can't expect a shutout, gonna lose some battles, but hopefully get some turnovers and the offense does enough they can win the war. At least you go down swinging if you lose.

Oh, and I make sure every coach on staff is fired up and yelling, getting his players revved up.

Yeah, I hope they learned something. Put me in the "very concerned" camp.
