Woodbury = Withey

I got very excited watching Withey play against Kentucky knowing we have that type of player coming on board next year. He'll be a beast underneath.

I originally thought the same thing, but Woodbury did not impress me in the all star game. Hope he grows like Withey who is much improved from last year!

Wow, I bet he was hard to box out.

Woodbury will get an earlier opportunity, of course, and will be forced to develop faster. I suspect there will be some unfair criticism from those with too lofty of expectations.

Withey is a nice player and is a pretty good comparison. He can jump better than Woody but I don't know what he was like as a frosh.

I think you missed my joke.

Withey is a 4th year junior...so he is 4 years ahead of Adam in phyiscal development. What will Woody be in 4 years? I think he will be better than he is right now. How much better? Only the bb gods know.

Withey was the #27 rated prospect in composite rankings in 2008.
Adam is the #43 rated prospect in composite rankings in 2012.

Withey is more athletic.
Adam is more rugged.
Should be interesting to see how this pans out.

Here's who I think is going to be the best comparison for Woodbury.

Jared Reiner Stats - Iowa Hawkeyes - College Basketball

Because of the evolution of AAU ball, I think AW will benefit from having played (well) against more variety of and better competition. I believe that allows AW to exceed JR's early year numbers, across the board. I see him on a similar curve as JR in scoring - peaking in that 10-12 ppg area but I don't expect he will exceed JR's rebounding numbers.

My hope for AW is that he grows to a solid 12 / 6 guy and has an even bigger impact on defense. If he can achieve this earlier than JR, (and I think he can just based on his hustle, hard work and strong bball IQ) he will have lived up to his billing. I also hope he avoids the injuries that I recall interrupted JR's late Hawkeye career.

The obstacles facing AW are his strength, hops and having to face consistently more athletic, well rounded big men than JR had to face. The positives that will allow him to compete / be more productive earlier are his national experience, being a lefty, his work ethic and playing with Gesell and White for his whole career.

Withey is more of an athletic defensive stopper, as opposed to what I know about Woodbury, who is less athletic but with much stronger ball skills.

I don't think the comparison is apt, unless you think they look alike...

Withey is more like Ken Johnson from Ohio State way back when. Woodbury is more like a less polished Joel Pryzbilla.

Folks must keep in mind the development track of college big men...most are on a track like Withey....they start to come into their own the third year on campus. Withey had the good fortune of a redshirt year, too...Woodbury won't get that, and most don't.

Woodbury has not really displayed the shot blocking instincts that Withey has, either.

Jared was involved in the AAU set too...this isn't something new in the last few years...AAU has been in full swing for the last 12-15 years

I dont know if Woodbury can be that good, but it'll be interesting to see.

Development of big men can be a tricky thing.

Woody will need to add about ten inches to his vertical to be Withey. I don't see that happening even with a lot of time in the weight room. That being said, I think Woody will add much more to the offensive end of the floor than Withey does.

He also played behind the Morris twins, so he wasn't expected to do too much.

This kid was highly recruited..verbally committed to Louisville, then switched to Arizona...Lute retired, and he committed to KU. He was redshirting at Arizona his frosh year, then transfered after one semester...became eligible the following fall with 3.5 years to play.
