Woodbury moving up ESPN's top 100 rankings

Calling Roy a snake oil salesman is idiotic.

It infers he is selling something that he doesn't really have. It would infer that he isn't what he appears to be.

But he is EXACTLY what he appears to be. He has one of the top five basketball programs of all time and he has won two NCAA Tournaments, been to 7 or 8 Final Fours as a head coach and won too many regular season and conference tournament championships to keep track of.

What about any of that makes him a snake oil salesman because he takes recruits from Iowa?

Now, if you just want to whine about him taking Iowa recruits through legitmate tactics, that's fine. But don't make it sound like he is casting some magic spell over big time recruits that grow up in Iowa. That makes the players sound stupid. It makes it sound like they don't know what is best for themselves.

You just demean yourself and your arguments when you call Roy a snake oil salesman.

Of course you're buying right into it, another perfect rube for Roy. The point is, this sh*t must stop. And if it takes us to demonize him, so be it. Don't try to tell me he doesn't speak about his long list of players from Iowa that he's coached to portray himself as an adoptive son of Iowa, pseudo-Iowan more like it. Fran needs to be above it, as a fan, I don't. Roy is evil, and until Iowa's borders become unfriendly to him, he'll keep prying players away from the UI.

So you're going to base all of this on an assumption that you, for all you know, is completely false? It's rather ignorant to make your judgement of a man based on your imagination.

Maybe he's not the coach that he's made out to be, but he's been able to sell the Kansas brand, and now the UNC brand. He's got some pretty nice merchandise (so to speak) to sell to these recruits. You can't be a snake oil salesman if you actually have a good product to sell.

Oh, we're poor little Iowa, how can we compete against the almighty Roy Williams, he's been so successful and wonderful, it's only natural the seas should part and the Iowa kids would want to be blessed by his presence. BS. Of course, nothing will change, because of attitudes like the above. People once thought Jim Tressel was a saint, too.

I get it, homes. Wait, I actually don't get it.

What is it in your response to me that Roy does that makes him a snake oil salesman? He talks, according to you, about the long list of Iowa players he has taken to Lawrence or Chapel Hill and...and...and...what?

Is there something that he is doing wrong when he recruits them? Hopefully they all come to fran going forward. But to act like Roy is fooling kids into playing for him or lying to them about what they will get is pretty lame on your part and the part of anyone else who makes that case.

As a matter of fact, you juust sound like a bunch of whiners when you do that. We just need to get better. But don't whine about someone and act like they are a charlaton (sp) when they recruit Iowa kids. It just makes everyone associated with our program look bad.

I'm sure Roy isn't "lying" to them, but I'm tired of people just accepting the notion that, "Well, he's Roy Williams and he's been successful, so if kids want to go play for him, I understand it". That benign attitude must end. He's selling the snake oil that if you want to be truly successful, you need to play for him. Maybe you're right, we should just let Williams come into the state and do what he damn well pleases, because he's, after all, Roy Williams. Heck, if I'm Williams, I'd keep coming here too, because no one is doing anything to stop me.

Bottom line - Woodbury needs to commit to Iowa. There, I put the thread back on track. :)

How do you know that?

And what does saying that he's not a snake oil salesman have to do with being okay with him recruiting players from Iowa?

You seriously need to step back from the ledge. It is PERFECTLY understandable why these players go and play for him, especially when "Kansas" or "North Carolina" is attached to his job title.

That does NOT mean that we accept it for all eternity. That does NOT mean that this program doesn't need to improve so that we can keep the top in-state talent here. But it doesn't make him a snake oil salesman.

I mean really, if saying that players need to play for him to be truly great makes him a snake oil salesman, then I'm pretty sure that 100% of all college coaches who are worth their salt are as well. That's kind of the WHOLE POINT of recruiting.

That, I agree with.

Raef LaFrentz, Nick Collison, Kirk Heinrich, Harrison Barnes, Marcus Paige, Adam Woodbury.....

The best players from the state of Iowa in recent memory.....

Let us hope that Woodbury becomes a Hawkeye.

I think it speaks awfully well of our kids here in Iowa that he keeps coming back when he feels he needs kids he can trust to be dedicated and hard working. If that is being a snake oil salesman then I hope Fran has some oil in his pocket. Does this mean KF and Brands are snake oil salesman just because they have gotten top talent from out of state. Look I am tired of Roy coming in and taking players that could really help but I can't blame a kid who wants to play for one of the best coaches in the US.

Today's word is Facetious.

I'm Roy Williams. I own the State of Iowa. What is it going to take to put you behind the wheel of this classic ride?

What would be even better is if he went to UNC and the Tarheels crapped it down their legs AGAIN.

I don't blame Iowa kids signing with Roy because of the way everyone else kisses his *ss everytime he swoops down. Seriously people, this guy continues to pillage the state and Iowans just keep rolling out the red carpet.

They should just change the name of the state to France.
Branstad prepares the Capitol steps for Roy Williams' State of the State Address.....

Funny. Sad, but true. Still funny.
