Woodbury misses cut?

I have nothing against Dekker and I am not surprised he went to Wisconsin. I will say that Sheboygan Lutheran does NOT play any heavy duty competition. ( I live pretty much next door to S. Lutheran) So, like any talented kid from a small school playing in a small school league in a rural state, the Big Ten will be a rude awakening. That being said, I wish him the best, except when he plays against the Hawks.

He is a top 20 five star recruit. Sorry to say but everyone outside of Iowa City is pretty sure he is better than White. The kid is a monster, and the only thing that will slow him down is Bo Ryan.

I agree that his individual talent might be wasted at Wisky.

I saw enough in the all-star game to know that Dekker is the real deal. I had him as my early pick for Big Ten FOY, but with Glenn Robinson III coming on so strong thru the spring/summer season, he might get the nod. Yogi Ferrell could figure in also.

Dekker just looks like one of those guys that has great instincts, and can do everything well, kind of like Aaron White.

Indiana has about 3 FOY candidates. And Robinson should have some good competiton from his teammate, Mitch McGary for that honor. People seem to forget how well he played during the summer of 2011.

Really? Seriously? How many games has this kid played against the likes of the BIG for you to make such a statement?

Should be fun to watch. They look alot like the same player, both 6-8 and play from the outside in. Dekkar just looks so good when you see him play though, and I have only seen Uthoff versus Iowa level competition. Dekkar looks like Robbie Hummel with good knees.

You ruined my trolling attempt. :(

The competition this season just for making the All Frosh team will be fierce..top candidates in no order:

Ferrell- If Hulls goes to shooting guard,he will get playing time galore.

Robinson III- late riser to become the highest rated Big Ten recruit,an open spot at the small forward spot will give him a leg up.

McGary- rated as high as #3 earlier, but fell off of allstar performances..still a beast, and has an open power forward slot to fall into.

Woodbury- open center position helps his chances.

Gesell- open pg position is a big boost.

Dekker- will fight for minutes, could sit behind vet forwards more than the other top recruits around the league.

Harris- MSU has an open slot at the wing,so he could play immediately.

Johnson- LewJack is gone,so Ronnie could step in for PU.

These are just the top names, but usually a sleeper is out there like Aaron White.
Making these teams is usually a function of playing time, like with Gatens and May, but this is a year when the upper half teams have open starting slots for frosh, with good vets around them, so unlike when Iowa has had bad teams that frosh had to play a big role,Michigan,MSU,IU,and Iowa have decent to good teams with top frosh to fill starting roles....should be interesting.

jhhawk - i think zach mccabe has something to say about the "open" center position. ideally zach is a pf but he started at center quite a lot for iowa last yr. i would expect him to be there at least at the beginning of the season until woodbury, meyer, and olaseni can take it over. and out of those 3 i am hoping that just 1 finds their stride this yr (which just 1 will create more depth down low). and if only 1 finds their stride i would bet on woodbury but i doubt zach is just giving up his center spot to him. especially since i dont see zach getting much time behind white and basabe at the pf spot.

only spots i would say are truely open at iowa is pg...maybe sg. pg i see as a tandem of gesell and clemmons being about even on time. and sg we need a perimeter player that can spread the floor so i see ogelsby winning that easily over ingram as i havent seen a video of him shooting outside 5 ft it seems like. i think the most impressive thing this coming yr will be ogelsby's defense. he has the tools to really be a good defender if some of gatens defensive attitude rubbed off on him.

I sure hope not. McCabe is a guy who can hit the open 3 and can feast on some bad teams, but struggles against athleticism.
+1 Post play was a huge weakness last season. If McCabe is getting a lot of minutes at the 5 i think it will hamper how much the team improves.

i am not saying i think he is our best option at the 5 as i think he is more of a 4. but there are 2 better players at the 4 so his best option right now is at the 5. i dont see him rolling out the red carpet and telling woodbury that he kept his seat warm for him last yr. i would bet that zach knows better than all of us where his deficencies were last yr and is probably trying to improve on them. and at the pace i think fran will want this team running i think woodbury plays about 15 min a game because he wont be in the right shape...kind of like how white started with few minutes and then worked into a 27 min type of guy. i think woodbury will come along slower. he has incredible talent but he also has a lot to learn.

How do you know he won't be in the right shape? Just curioius.

my guess. using the fact that he is 7 ft tall and usually taller players struggle going at the speed that fran wants to. he didnt play that way in hs so it may be something that he needs to adjust to. hopefully he can play more minutes but even 15+ min is more than meyers leonard did as a frosh and he has turned out pretty good.

That makes sense. I am hoping he will be the exception and come in fully prepared for B1G BB. Even though he is 7' he can still come in ready to rock and roll.

Honestly I dont even see Mcabe as being an option at the 5 next year.

Options at the 5 should be Woodbury, Basabe, Myer, Olesani.

Zack is short to play the 4 let alone 5.

McCabe is 6'7", while it's not ideal that 5, he's strong and that goes a ways in the B1G. Woody will get pushed around his first year in the league. Guys like Zach are closer to Brunner in regards to height, except Zach can hit the open jumper better than Bru ever could. Not to mention you are putting Mel at the 5 and he's the same size as McCabe but not as strong.
