Woodbury and Gesell at Pangos AA Camp

I like the Drew Nietzel comparison. In terms of their physical appearance, but still being able to ball, be a leader, and winning type player. That would certainly make Gesell a worthwhile get for Fran to help this ballclub over the next 4 years.

This is the first time I have seen extended video of Gesell, and Nietzel came to mind immediately. A must get for FM.

My first time as well. I actually kind of saw almost like a young Jason Williams (minus the flash) with his ability to seemingly effortlessly change directions & speed and blow past defenders. Quicker than fast with a knockdown pull up jumper. Did he even hit the rim in that game? He moved the ball up the court quick with the pass to get into the offense early, didn't force shots, pretty tight handle. I liked what I saw, glad to have finally gotten an extended look at him.

I just hope that Fran can persuade BOTH of these kids to attend Iowa and stop them from going outside the state. It is time that kids who grow up in Iowa and are Hawk fans play for Iowa.

Gesell is from Nebby and by all accounts did not grow up a Hawk fan. But the timing of Iowa backing off PG's and Gesell visiting Iowa spiked speculation that he might be an Iowa lean.

The one thing that stuck out for me with Woodbury was he is as tall as he is, but doesn't look clumsy at all.

I hope that Gesell comes to Iowa and pray he is nothing like Neitzel, that is all I have on that comparison. Gesell looks smooth and under control, if he ends up at Iowa he will need to be a PG and not flex between the two positions.

I wouldn't mind it if he was like Neitzel. The ability to be that kind of player would be a pretty nice thing for Fran to have, even if he ideally wouldn't need to put Gessell at the 2.

I see the Nietzel comparison in stature only. This didn't seem to effect his ability to carve out a niche with a perennial contender and become a productive leader at that. Gessell would seem to be a PG IMO, whereas I am getting the feeling that there would be some concern about the comparison because Nietzel was possibly a more natural 2 guard?

Never a fan of Neitzel all the hype and very little results until his Junior year and then a drop off his Senior year when he was supposed to be the top PG in the country and didn't make an All-American team.
To me if Gesell is a player that resembles Neitzel, then it would be better he goes elsewhere. 4-star player and No. 68 recruit overall.
When it came time for Neitzel to shine as a Senior he didn't stand out.

he was also hurt the whole year and gutted it out instead of pussing out and bailing like another certain PG that just left.

Neitzel was a very good shooter and a better than average passer, but he was not a dominant player that could control a game at any point in his career. Did he have some big games, yes, did MSU have a lot of success in those games...not really.
There is a difference to the type of injury Lucas had and what Neitzel had. Neitzel missed a game or only played in part of it. Lucas had an achilles injury and will never be the same, period. No matter how advance science has come there are still two injuries, save a spinal injury, that end or limit careers: Achilles tendon tear and Dislocation/Fracture of ankle. Each injury takes years to come back from, no matter how soon that player is able to come back.
Lucas is a whole other subject, we can debate all day if he should have been POY as a sophomore. Comparing the injuries of the two is not exactly a real argument.

If Neitzel was that hurt and hurting his team or himself, the coaches should have pulled him until he was healthy, or as healthy as he could be, but instead it is always feel sorry for him and make excuses, he also led MSU in minutes played that year, so how hurt was he really? That is what ticks me off about any player, pull him if he is truly hurt, if not, don't cry and make excuses.

I think he was taking a shot at Cully, not referring to Lucas.

And it still makes little sense to argue that point of Neitzel playing through what he had wrong with him.

Again, Cully had surgery...he was injured, plain and simple. Neitzel did not have any kind of surgrey, it is not the same. Payne did not look healthy from day one of the season and a torn oblique and a hernia may have had something to do with it.

Not quite sure how the Neitzel/Payne correlation is even there. It actually made more sense to attack Lucas.

It is obvious why Payne left, he wasn't going to be the starter and if that is what he felt was best for him, then I would hope that all Iowa fans agree it is better that he isn't at Iowa. He could have become a problem if he wasn't happy about PT and it is just better he is gone from that respect.

If that is a typical game for Gesell, how does he stay a 3 star???

good question. maybe its because the "big time" programs haven't offered him yet. that seems to drive stars more than anything. if some big east, acc, or if kansas offers (which i don't know if they have, but i doubt it) then you'll see his ranking climb fast.

Well then lets hope he stays a 3 star! Honestly, Paige would have been sweet, but i think we could get a sleeper in Gesell

BUMPAGE. Gesell comes in around 7:00 mark and scores 3 out of first 5 offensive possessions.

Not great video quality but theres not much out there.

If Gesell is like Neitzel, Iowa is in good shape.
Tough player, great feel for the game, handled the game well.
