It will be interesting to see if the magician can pull a rabbit out of his hat again. How many times when it appears strong apathy has set in, it is then when Kirk's teams rise to the occasion and surprise all of us. I know this seems highly unlikely at this time, but isn't that the case each time?
Still it really does have a different feel to it this time. The conference has expanded to a record amount of teams and the odds of a significant bounce back seem more unlikely than ever before. Let's face it the hype of our quarterback had visions of an elusive running QB with the accuracy of a gifted scoring QB that would remedy what has ailed the program for way too long. We still haven't recovered from the previous offensive coordinator with a stench of questionable family association during that whole time.
To add to this apathy is the disastrous results of the last two BIG TEN Championship games with the winner of the West Conference getting their asses handed to them by the East Conference Champions. NOT EVEN CLOSE.
Now the odds have even worsened the last few years with the expansion of the conference by add the best of the Pac-10 conference and the let down of the previously added Super Star QB (how be it injured which is so IOWA). This caused the significant hype mention previously in my comments
Let's be honest what has Iowa done lately? We get a false hope with winning the West Conference just to get our asses handed to us. So here we are all teams in one division. We just went through a dark valley with the previous Offensive Coordinator and if this current pathway goes south this year it will be another HUGE embarrassment to the Hawkeye fan base. It's not looking pretty at this point, but who knows Kirk may pull that rabbit out.
If it doesn't turn out good the next victim could be the basketball program. Having the basketball program starting up under a new coach who already is following FRAN FATIGUE it will not help if the program is preceded in death by a stagnate football program. It won't be fair to Ben but basketball fatigue had just happened and to heap on top a possible football fatigue may put Ben in situation that is totally out of his control.
A tired fan base could work against Ben and put him in a environment that may be nothing of his own doing. On the other hand it also could put him in position to bring energy back to a tired fan base and elevate him to a GOD LIKE status as far a necessitating the Iowa fan base. You have to go back to BEFORE Hayden Fry came along and Basketball was where the energy level was along with a renown wrestling program. Well a great basketball program would be what the doctored ordered especially if the football program tanks this year.
Anyone have any carrots??? We may need that rabbit.
