Without Hubbard, Iowa's PG spot has question marks

All of this happens just when I was starting to look forward to Iowa basketball this winter. Now what am I going to do, can't bare to watch another horrible season and that is just what it looks like it will be.

Jon, you predicted 20 wins I thought (or atleast the possibility) and I was on board with that based on the non-conference and conf schedule, what do you say now?

Still willing to give Fran some time, but this seriously is not good. And as a few people have said, where are the commits? And then the argument is, well no one wants to play for a losing team.

but we can't win if we don't get better players, and we're looking at a horrible season again. Bryce is a good player, and I have to think teams will figure out Basabe for a bit of a sophmore slump.

We don't know for sure, but this season is already looking like another wash. We had built up some momentum too with attendence and excitment. Have to think that's been downgraded.

I mentioned this in another thread too... I think so, and I believe he is trying to walk-on.

I've heard he is too spank. But haven't had it confirmed. I know that on the PTL televised game the other night they said he was looking to walk-on. But that's hardly confirmation.

I know Murphy got in trouble last year, but if we can roll out the red carpet for a player like Hubbard, hopefully we can give Murphy a second chance....assuming he's turned his life around.

Dre is in school and is trying to walk on. He would be a capable backup.

Thanks Duff. And I agree. He would be a much better option than the walk ons we had on the team last season...that's for sure. No offense intended.

Iowa was in a hole when Lick got here and the hole got deeper under him. Fran walked into a situation that was about as bad as you can get (at least in my lifetime). 3 years is a good evaluation period for a college basketball coach. Fran did improve the roster a great deal last season and I like his current recruits. The renovation of Carver and the practice facility is going to help going forward. Lots of people were excited with the Hubbard get, and it shows Fran can get players here (see Cartwright and Basabe). The fact of the matter is Hubbard did something that nobody saw coming. Fran got him here (and other schools wanted him) and then for whatever reason Hubbard walked out on his team, and coaches and the university. If Fran had not gotten Hubbard to come, people would have been upset. Especially after thinking they had a good shot at the PG from Cali. Fran did his job here.

I know this stinks right now but I can't fault the staff. We all knew this was going to be a uphill battle when Lick was let go and I still think the future is bright. Fran is a good coach and wants to recruit. That is something we have not had in a coach at the same time since Mr. Davis.

I completely disagree. I'm a huge Caff supporter but this is completely on him. He took a chance on Hubbard, withdrawing an offer from Glover at the same time, and had it blow up in his face. If it had worked out he would have gotten all the credit for it. Since it didn't, the blame lies directly at his feet.

But other schools wanted Hubbard too. It's not like Fran was the lone coach after him. By all accounts, he seemed like a changed guy.

It's irrevelant what that other schools wanted him. This is on Fran,he'll survive it. Fran knew it was a risk when he did it,so did everybody else.It backfired.

Other schools wanting Hubbard is irrelevant. Caff made Hubbard a priority and withdrew offers to other players as a result. That is a huge gamble. Do you think Nebraska made Hubbard a priority? Sure they were willing to give him a chance. But they weren't withdrawing offers from players who played a position of need as a result.

I was on board with the Hubbard signing from the beginning. But I also said from the beginning that withdrawing the Glover offer was a horrible gamble. The gamble just blew up in our face.

Okay, I am going back to the broken record, pay attention:

ONLY 2 coaches in the last ten years that didn't sign a significant recruiting class in their first 2 seasons (including the one in which they were hired) ever signed a class rated in the top half of their conference.

Those two guys were Montgomery from Cal and Horn from USC.

This is Fran's third year. If he doesn't sign that class this year, he will have to do something unprecedented in recent history to turn things around.

I love how people keep talking about a five year plan, like that makes sense. A five year plan would only work if you were signing strong classes along the way, ala Indiana.

People, things are on the brink.

That being said, Meyer, Basabe, White, and Marble are a good start. But, Fran really needs to get some truly gifted players to add to these guys if he wants to compete in the B1G
