With FSU and Clemson Joining the Big 12...

I dont disagree at all, but the OP in the CF thread is right. ISU is seeing a larger enrollment and higher graduation rate, so its making an impact. I still am shocked when I go home and its like I have never left West Des Moines, I don't feel like I am walking into Hawk country as much as I used to.

Once again it’s a perception thing....you are seeing what you want to see. I rarely go to Iowa anymore as most of my family lives in Missouri now. With that said I am always remarked at how much more of a dominant factor Iowa is than ISU. Conversely the ISU fans (per the thought on flags flying) are much more outspoken and obnoxious. That’s true out here as I also occasionally see ISU apparel (lot of Chicago kids go to both schools) and they are always more likely to say something stupid or out loud about the teams…..Iowa fans don’t do that out here.

I will say this too, some of my "tweener" friends growing up are now, for the first time, ISU season ticket holders for the simple reason that they can relate and like Rhoads and Hoiberg more than McCaffery and Ferentz. I think ISU's coaches may relate better to the younger generation.

You are on a roll today. This thread is going to be awesome.

good, the butthurt is always strong in this one.

You are truly amazing, I’ve seen your tripe before and I notice you avoid responding to people who back you into a corner. They relate better….?!?!? Honestly, I don’ even know what to say……

The bolded part is so far off its ridiculous. You really think that 40% of the people that give a rip about college sports in eastern Iowa favor ISU over the Hawks?

That is just dumb.
In my 30 years, the ISU impact has changed dramatically in Eastern Iowa. I hate to put a number by it, but I am using my families neighborhood as a sample of the population.

You factor in Ames, Ankeny and Des Moines, no question ISU is number 1.

I'll give you Ames. That's where it ends. You don't even have a majority Boone let alone scratching the surface in Ankeny and Des Moines. I'd almost be willing to wager there are more Nebraska fans in Ankeny and Des Moines.

Again just going by what I was told by them. Rhoads is younger and more energetic. Everyone knew Hoiberg everyone growing up.

This is not true……read the post above you. I went to ISU and remained an Iowa fan. The majority of all the small school kids and UNI’s kids are predominantly Iowa fans. This is something ISU fans have told themselves for years…..come out to Chicago land. You see Iowa apparel all over the place. Iowa is not fading into obscurity as you guys have so desperately hoped….

Talk to the old timers….Iowa was terrible and I mean epically bad for close to 20 years. They had several years when they were considered one of the 10 to 15 worst teams in the country and that ironically coincided with ISU’s best overall era and yet Iowa still packed their stadium and ISU did not!

You guys think its a success thing, but it is way more than that.

Not really. For the decade of the 1970's Iowa home attendance averaged just over 50,000 per game. I wouldnt say Hawk fans "packed the stadium" during some of those down years.

So you are saying that it is a 60/40 ratio of Hawk fans and Clone fans in Eastern Iowa, which includes Iowa City?

Unbelievable.

When in Colorado we ran into a family of ISU fans. We tried to strike up an intelligent conversation but they immediately made anti-Iowa comments. Just another day in the life of a fanbase with an inferiority complex. You would think they would eventually get an identity of their own instead of constantly feeding off of big brother.

I just included IC in the area as they are a big city for the area. Not saying they are 60/40 but ISU is making a bigger impact than ever in Eastern Iowa.

You can carve out and exclude Iowa City to Cedar Rapids from eastern Iowa and you're not getting 60/40.

What was capacity in the 70's?

From Wikipedia:

The stadium also underwent major renovations in 1956, 1983 and 1990 where capacity was gradually taken from 53,000 to 70,397. The most recent renovations in 2004–06 pushed the capacity to its current level at 70,585.

Not sure but they averaged over 58,000 one year in the early 60's. So unless they lost a bunch of seating while the renovation was going on there were at least 8,000 empty seats per game.

Ames is probably 80/20 ISU. Ankeny is probably 60/40 Hawks. Des Moines is probably 70/30 hawks. How that equates to clown country is beyond me considering Des Moines is about 5 times the size of Ankeny and Ames combined. You are completely delusional.
