Wisconsin clearly fumbled on the last play

A whole lot of blaming the victim going on in this thread. Whether you hate Wisconsin or not, they got jobbed. Centering the ball in the middle of the field for a FG is not idiotic, it happens all the time. What is idiotic is referees that can't figure out how to spot the ball or blow a play dead. There should have been more than enough time to spot it and run another play. Stop making excuses for awful officiating. If it happens to us it won't be so funny.

You hit the nail on the head...

Not on the official. Ball was spotted. QB was arguing with the official and didn't realize clock was running until 2 seconds left. If they would have been up trying to run a play they could have got the delay of game on ASU

The ball was spotted at the :04 mark, and I don't believe the ball was ever readied for play (see: Capitol One Bowl penalty before The Catch). He also was holding his hand up to the center and Stave like, "Hold on," until there was one or two seconds left. He never actually signaled that the ball was ready to play.

And in any case, if the officials are trying to figure out what happened and whether there should be a change in possession, shouldn't there be an official's timeout? Doesn't seem fair to the offense to see 10 seconds tick away while the officials bumble **** around and not throw a flag on ASU for wasting time.

It may not be relevant, since the QB 'gave himself up', but the reason for the confusion about the knee is that he put his knee down first and *then* placed the ball as he was stepping back. He would have been smarter to keep control of the ball to eliminate all doubt, and so he could hand the ball to the ref quickly.

Also note Rule 4, Section 1, Article 3(o): “A live ball becomes dead and an official shall sound his whistle or declare it dead … When a ball carrier simulates placing his knee on the ground.” The officials saw that and rightly whistled the ball dead, well before ASU jumped on the ball. So there's no way you don't call delay of game there, and that was their huge mistake.

Finally, what is Jen Bielema doing tweeting "#karma"?

There are a lot of really REALLY stupid people in this thread that have absolutely no clue about how football works. It's embarrassing.

Yeah, you are right......I mean Wisconsin didn't take the Loss did they?

Life isn't all puppy dogs, and fairy tails. Should the refs have done a better job? Yeah, but if you really think that the D is just going to line up and give you time to reset and spike, then you show that YOU don't know football. At that point you are banking on the ref, and that is just foolish. Kick the dang ball, if you don't have any TO's.

The defense should have no control whatsoever over the pace of play. None. Only the officials and the offense have any control and the officials should be spotting the ball as quickly as possible for the offense decide when to snap it.

This was a ref fail. Plain and simple.

Well we just disagree then. No way I'm gonna run a play with that much time left and no TO's. Stupid coaching decision if you ask me. How many times have we seen Ref's blow the simplest of things, why let it boil down to them?

You're arguing over nothing, because you're both right.

1) The refs screwed up.
2) Wisconsin screwed up by putting their fate in the ref's hands. The decision to center the ball may be supportable with that much time remaining, but the QB should never have let go of the ball.

This guy gets it

This guy gets it

He doesn't get anything.

These teams practice the 2 minute drill again and again and again. There are many teams that do exactly what Wisconsin did and everything goes fine. They know exactly how much time it takes to run a play barring any acceptable interference. Why do I say acceptable interference? Because, a defender jumping on a dead ball for 12 seconds to kill time after it's been blown dead is inexcusable and by football rules absolutely unacceptable. No team can expect a group of officials to be so catastrophically stupid to screw that situation up. To put any blame on Wisconsin in this situation makes you like like a GD biased idiot.

Again, teams do exactly what Wisconsin did every single week. It's the smart play on 1st and 10 with 18 seconds left because then you kick the ball with no time on the clock.

They didn't run the ball, because they knew the other team would lay on them, and not let them run another play. That is clue enough that the D is going to do something to prevent them from running another play, that is only freaking logical. So you are leaving it up to the officials, and that is just stupid. If anything has been proven time, and time and time again, it is the officials make a **** of everything.

I will say you are right in THEORY. The problem is the game isn't played in a vacuum, and reality has a way of sh!tting all over that theory of yours/Wisconsin. You gotta be smarter than that, and at least take your shot at the win when you have it, be that 18 sec., 1 min 20 sec., or 1 sec., from the left hash, right hash, or middle of the field. Wisconsin got greedy, made a stupid decision, officials do what they do, and Wisconsin got burned.

Dean, I disagree with your take. All the scenarios you bring up about the defense not letting you line up or laying on the ball or the ball carrier are all examples of defensive delay of game. And that's up to the officials to prevent. I will agree with you in that the officials are dum dums who tend to mess it up, but you can't game plan around their incompetence. Apparently the Pac12 heads thought the same, and have reprimanded the officials (although I'm not sure exactly what the reprimand would be - Since Wiscy still records an "L").

I agree that this SHOULD work. I am just saying the obvious (obvious, because it is what happened, that things can go wrong with this).

That is all really, I'll just let this die, as I do get what everyone is saying, and why it should work just fine.....I guess I'm just a "realist" ;)

I don't know why all you asshats think that terrible officiating is Wisky's fault. The officials blew their whistles with 15 seconds left, and couldn't spot it until one second left. Terrible officiating.

.....its a 30 yard FG. Line up and freaking kick it from where ever! This is football. There's no crying in football. No whining because you don't get to kick it from the middle oF the field! Man up and kick it or go home with a loss.

This makes no sense. There was a bunch of time left on the clock. Why would you attempt a harder kick and give the opponent an opportunity with the ball for no reason?

Wisconsin's strategy wasn't dumb. They just ran into a random bout of gross incompetence from the officials.

Yep. The people disagreeing with you must not have seen the Hawkeye reffing in 2005. Notre Dame has made a living off working the refs. It's been going on since before the "fainting Irish" of 1950s fame. Also, the Wisky QB should've handed the ball to the ref. The reason it's hard to win on the road is because of home-cooking. GA should've anticipated that. Having said this I still think the refs should be suspended or demoted. I hope Kirk Ferentz paid attention and doesn't make the same mistake on the road this season.
