Win-Lost %

The situation Hayden took over was considerably worse than what he left KF. He turned around a program in the shitter for almost two decades. He broke through the OSU-Michigan strangle hold on the conference, helping other programs in the league do the same. He built the program and its resources up to pave the way for KF’s success.

And that’s just on-field success. We’re only three years removed from a pretty significant scandal in KF’s program that Hayden didn’t have happen in his program. And then there’s the nepotism. Hayden’s son wanted on the Iowa staff badly but Hayden wouldn’t hire him because he knew the of the potential issues, which KF can’t see. That also matters.

KF deserves credit for keeping what Hayden built going but Hayden is the goat of Iowa Football coaches. Nothing you say will change my mind on that. :)
You are overstating a bit what KF took over. Hayden left the cupboard pretty bare and KF had to rebuild things pretty much from the ground up. I agree that what Hayden did was more impressive, but continuing the analogy, what KF walked into was a hell of a lot closer to what Fran inherited than what Mr. Davis did.

As for scandals, that holds little sway for me. Totally different era. Hayden did not have to deal with social media, the internet and all of the things that amplify the smallest of wrongdoing. Also, KF's biggest scandal, alleged racial biased in his program, would not have even been a topic in the 80s. Hell, Fry is so old he actually integrated the SWAC. But, that is not to say that Black football players in the 80s were treated in the type of manner that is expected today. No way. As for nepotism, that is not a scandal, its just dumb head coaching IMHO. KF still won 10 games twice with his dimwitty son as OC.

You are biased. I get it. We all are. You will never convince me that Jordan is not the GOAT in basketball. 10 years ago I would have agreed with you on Fry. But, KF's record demonstrably exceeds Fry's. Its just the objective truth.

Nah, I covered that team. There was talent there including what would become Iowa's most dominant OL. Yes, KF and staff developed those guys, but the cupboard wasn't as bare as some folks think. KF chose overhaul the program and build it back up. He didn't need to do it that way. He chose to and it worked. But that shouldn't be a knock on what he Hayden left him.

Your dismissal of the racial bias on being the times is pretty ignorant. Did you know Hayden had Blacks and Whites rooms together so they could learn about each other? We asked KF about that early in his tenure, and he dismissed it as you'd expect. That it doesn't matter to you says more about your than what went on with an internal and external report stating there was racial bias in the program. And I've had a lot of conversations with former players that I've gotten to know through the years that let me know what went on.

I'm not bias. I lean on institutional knowledge from covering the program for 27 season. I won't try to change your mind. I know I can't from previous conversations. With that, I'll bail on the convo.

I don't get paid to be on these boards anymore. ;)

Rob, come on. We both get paid six grand a month to do this.

Rob, really interested in your conversations about what went on according to some former players. Anything you can share? Here to listen.

I am too, but I'm guessing the reason they shared their experiences with Rob was because they felt he'd keep it in confidence.
Yup. It felt like there's way more to that whole story going back all these yrs then just what we've heard. I too would be fascinated to hear more but not everyone wants to have their name out there for it. The journalists that start sharing things told off the record left and right don't stick around long. Robs been around quite awhile now and has had longstanding relationships with former players because he's a pros pro at what he does.
