Why was the travel call overturned???!!!

It appeared from the replay that it was a foul. The problem I have with it is that the contact occurred on the half-court side of Taylor's head while the call came from the baseline. The ref making the call could not have seen the contact. When refs start making calls based on assumptions then I have a huge problem. In this case the call obviously came from a guy who didn't actually **SEE** the contact.

Assuming there was contact isn't the same as seeing contact. In the end I think it was a foul but I question the legitimacy of the ref making the call. If that makes sense.

I didn't make a case to why one was a foul and one was not. The only way the ref overturns a call that far away is he is certain he saw the foul and from what I saw it turns out he made the right call. Just because the wrong official made the call doesn't make the call wrong.

I still disagree and think the correct call was a travel. The contact did not cause the travel. And more times than not the official closest to the play has a better chance of getting the call right.

The thing that I don't understand is that the Wiscy player had already traveled and lost control of the ball and then Cartwright's hand touched his head/neck which had absolutely NO impact on the play. I'm not a basketball guy but how does that justify changing the flow/outcome of a game?

I was at the game and the play was right in front of me. Bad call, period. The ref that made the travel call was right there and should have had the balls to stand up the other ref and say he had a good view. Overall I liked how the refs let them play, but there were individual calls that were just plain terrible. And Steed warning Fran to not step out of the box, but Bo was stepping outside the box all night with no warning?? The refs in the Big Ten have Fran as a marked man and its not right.

Very disappointing ending to an otherwise great game. We made Wisconsin fall in love with the 3 tonight, and for the most part they were not hitting, but they got 2 big 3's from 2 also ran players #15, & #24 that really helped them win this game. And finally that loose ball at the end, we have got to force a jump on that play. Too bad, we led for the majority of the game, but couldn't pull it out. This is a tough one to swallow.

It wasn't clearly a foul. In real time, maybe it did. But the replay showed very little contact. That ref was on the baseline. He definitely was not in the best position to make the call.

When officials are allowed to use replay instead of real time to call fouls, let me know. That way I can stop watching basketball.

It was a foul. I wanted it to be clean, and I was pi*sed that it was overturned. But it was a foul. Fran said so in the post game, and he's already shown that he's not afraid to (politely) disagree with a call in a post game.

It was a borderline foul. The foul didn't cause Taylor to travel. He was flailing and sprawling in the air because of great Iowa defense. A player flailing and sprawling out-of-control doesn't get the benefit of a foul call. Normally.

If the game is tied, the travel call is upheld and no foul called. Iowa ball.

So a graze to the head is a foul, but a shove to the chest is not? You see why I'm mad?

The slight touch to the head had NO impact on him falling. None.

If you call every time a player's hand slightly grazes another player every post player would be called. In fact there would be nobody from either team left at the end of the game because they all would be fouled out.

It was called correctly by the ref standing 3 feet away.

Taylor was falling down on his own. Traveling is the correct call and absolutely no way that other ref should have been able to overturn it.

It was a foul, plain and simple.
The man inbounding the play threw it up for grabs because he was close to getting a five second call on him. Both players have the right to that ball. Inadvertant hit, travelling.......

That is EXACTLY what I have a problem with. He was right in front of the call and had the best view. No overrule, I saw it and I made the damn call, period. He is a pu$$y plain and simple and a gutless coward for having someone else tell him what he saw 3 feet in front of his face.

Just watched this game on the DVR... Absolutely BS call.

Tim Doyle: Good Call! Good Call!

BS MAN. Cartwright did not even TOUCH him. Yet somehow they overturn that call.

Whatever. Not the only bad call in this game to go Wisconsin's way, either.

"Blocking" foul on Cole early in the 2nd half gives Wisconsin 3 points as well. Another BS call.

WTF does it take for us to ever get an evenly called game. I am so sick of this crap.

Sorry folks but unfortunately the officiating crew did get this one right which even Fran acknowledged in his post-game talk.

If you click the photo you can see a larger version that shows Cartwright's arm making contact as shown by the Wisky jersey sort of being pulled up near the middle of his back plus Bryce's leg caught the opposing player's trail leg which is what caused #11 to hit the floor.

I'm livid that May couldn't even raise his arms to guard a three point attempt. We can all differ about the call, but May's effort was awful. He was immediately pulled & Marble guarded the Wisconsin player the rest of overtime.

He grazed him in the head... It's a foul. Especially in a situation where you know Iowa is wanting to foul, the ref will make the call. I'm shocked the ref on top of the action didn't make the correct call.

actually the REF on TOP of the play got it right, grazing somebody is NOT a foul in anyway shapr or form.....it was travel and everybody knew it except for that clown that calls himself a ref that was 40 feet away...face it that idiot was stupid.

Taylor was falling to the ground anyway and would have traveled anyway.....it's incidental contact from there in my opinion. Now on the other hand, Basabe was fouled countless times tonight, esp. on the rebound attempt at the end of regulation. It was a blatant hold by Leur, grabbing Basabe's chest/jersey. Leur couldn't handle Basabe down low. With that said, I thought Iowa went away from Basabe to much.

On another note, why is it that Wisconsin is allowed to muck up a game with riding guys all over the court? Is it because they have this mystique that they are this great defensive team, therefore refs allow them to get away with contact after contact? Either way Wisconsin better enjoy this one over Iowa, because I have a great feeling that Fran is going to have some good success in this conference.

I still disagree and think the correct call was a travel. The contact did not cause the travel. And more times than not the official closest to the play has a better chance of getting the call right.

I can't believe you wouldn't think that is a foul, if it happened against us you would be complaining right now that it was a foul. When a player is airborne it only takes a small amount of contact for you to lose your balance. It was the right call.

And as far as Bo getting the call overturned, he didn't even say one word to the official about that, he just dropped to one knee in disbelief.

I was in disbelief too, I thought that we just got away with a huge one.

The call was not overturned. Both refs blew their whistle, then one of them has to wait for the other to make the call, if they have the same call then nothing happens but when the second official sees that they don't have the same call then they discuss which one is correct. It just happened to be the one that went against us.

I don't agree with your first point. Wisconsin was hammering us a lot in the post play, but WE were doing the same on our end. If they would have called those fouls we wouldn't have even been in the game because Wisky would have been shooting FT's with 10 min left and they are the best shooting team in the country.

The second point I will agree with, the guards seemed to get called less for contact than we did. The got Marble and Gatens on a couple of ticky handchecks, which is a foul, but should have been called a little more on the Wisky end too.

I can't really argue with the final decision on that last call, but I do believe it could have gone either way. Taylor was falling down and BC had a right to that ball as well. Did he make contact? Yes, but no more than a lot of other things not being called. Certainly not enough to knock him over.

What killed me was the no call when Basabe got absolutely mugged on BC's last shot in regulation. Just don't get how that wasn't called.
