Why no Weisman/Greene comparisons?

Do you think we'd perceive Weisman's performance differently if he had been a 4 star recruit who transferred into Iowa's program and was black?

Do you think more of us would be making comparisons to Shonn Greene? Like Jon, I'm not suggesting Weisman is at Greene's level at this point. But why aren't we hearing more comparisons, at least from us homers on the boards?

Greene didn't exactly have a lot of jukes to his game, either. He read the field and decisively hit the hole, and fast. Seems like Weisman's style, too. And to my untrained eye, Weisman's burst through the hole isn't all that different from Greene's.

They are almost the exact same height and weight, too. At least based on Greene's current listing. He might have been a bit fatter early in the '08 season. Regardless, the players look similar in that regard, too.

Yet we mostly read or hear comparisons between Weisman and a running back who played at Stanford a few years back. If Weisman was black, I don't think that would be the case and everyone would be calling him the next Shonn Greene.

Weisman and Greene run differently. I agree with Podi in that Weisman runs more upright at this time...and Greene's vision was pretty amazing. That said, Weisman has two and a half years to grow and improve...the Greene we think of is 4th year junior Shonn Greene who also had a semester at a prep school.

Greene also had a sliver more top end speed that allowed him to get away from defenders. That's the one piece Weisman is missing. If he's just a slight touch faster Weisman would have taken two or three to the house yesterday.

Greene had allot more top end speed. He was also more agile, ran much lower and could make people miss in the open field.

Anyone who thinks Weisman runs like Greene dosen't know what their talking about. Greene could run like Weisman and did sometimes but Weisman can't do what Greene did. SG could wait behind his blockers for the first five yards and then take off.

Weisman is the classic one cut guy if the holes there hes good to go if not hes not going far. Luckly this Oline is opening enormous holes and once Mark gets up to speed hes tough to bring down.

SG, on the other hand could make multiple moves if the initial hole was not there.

If you combine all the good aspects of Weisman and Bullock together you have Greene.

Much happier to have Weisman over Coker though. If Weisman was on the field last year we probably get one or two more wins.

Because he's not Greene. He is doing his own thing making a name for himself. Will be fun to watch this kid mold into a true RB.

Other than that both guys play(-ed) for Iowa, there are no similarities between Greene and Weisman.

I want to see Weisman play against MSU Defense, before crowning him the end all, be all.

These first 3 games have been awesome and kudo's to him.

When Mark reverses his field after being rocked and contorting his body to get away from defenders, then beats the defenders to the corner to gain 30 or 40 yards...I'll start comparing him to SG. However, he completely lowered the shoulder on the CMU defender on the long touchdown...ala Mr Greene.

I like this kid alot...and he's tough as nails too. He's brought some identity to the offense...I'm thrilled with the find. Now we need to get Bullock and Canzeri in the passing game. Bullock in the slot...Canzeri in the backfield. That's going to put a ton of pressure on the defense. Run the corners and safeties off with deep routes and create space for CJ, Bullock, and Canzeri.

Clearly you're a racist!

Re-watch the 2008 game against ISU. SGs bail-out on what was certain to be a punting situation says everything one needs to hear and see to know the type of back SG was and his impact at Iowa.

Weisman is making his way. Joey Galloway said it best on his first or second long run about when you see the back looking behind him he knows he will get tackled before he reaches the end zone.

Weisman is doing just fine. He will continue to grow, and he will, barring injury or unforeseen circumstances, log a lot of carries during the next three seasons.

I have seen the comparisons to Coker(who is black). So don't know what the point is. MW is only a sophmore. I look forward to see how things go from here.

You must never again type or speak the words bolded above. Shame on you.

Another distinction: Weisman can run over guys, SG could run THROUGH guys.

Fact is, different styles. Weisman may actually be faster to the hole, but SG had awesome vision. Both clearly benefit(ed) from very good--maybe even great--OLs.

FWIW, one of my best friends went down to the game as a guest of one of the Goofer coaches. The coach's thought about Weisman is that he'll play on Sundays. Not bad for our 48th string RB. Go Hawks!

No, he's more of a Peyton Hillis, Toby Gerhardt, Mike Alsott, Jacob Hester, Rex Burkhead type of back. Seeing all of them on my awesome coaching film that I have access to and analyze all the time, there is one thing about them that I can't help but notice.

High motor guys. Gamers. Play through the end of the whistle. Coaches' sons. Instincts make up for lack of athleticism.

A) The music on that Greene video sucks. I can't stand football clips put to rap music. The clips are good though, too bad he ruined it with sh*tty rap music.

B) Shonn Greene and Weisman have one huge thing in common. They run people over. To say they have nothing in common is wrong. Greene was faster and had better moves... but running people over was also one of his major skills. Same with Weisman.

i know the music sucks, but the others didn't have the full speed spin move play nor the one where he runs over the purdue player

I was thinking more John Riggins or maybe Craig James. Or for Hawkeye fans out there who grew up in the glory years of the 80s, Rick Bayless.
