Why Marble?

You simply don't draw up final shots for your 6'1 Freshmen PG. If he doesn't get a clean look, there is a decent shot you don't get a shot up at all, which would have this entire board going nuts.

Given this team's makeup Marble is really our only option. We dont have anyone who can consistently get off a shot and no one to throw it to on the post. If you design a play for Gesell coming off a screen there is a 50% chance he will be covered and cant separate to get his own shot off the dribble.

Marble had a wide open 6 footer that he just needs to make

The whole Iowa team stopped and watched Marble. I'm guessing that was Fran's play. There's no one on Iowa that's that much of a mismatch. Especially when we have no shooters.

As opposed to how it played out and the whole board went nuts anyway?

The point is to run a screen more than 3 seconds left on the clock, if he doesn't get that separation he dishs it off, if he does and misses you hope for a tip-in. If Purdue rebounds there isn't enough time to get back down court.

Believe what you want, think want you want but people are going to disagree. I agree that with Marbles length it helps in the situation but he isn't playing well, that is a fact and to me it is more important.

You are missing my point, let Marble create and draw everyone and dump it off, that is not a bad thing. Iowa players driving to the basket has not been something to watch and expect anything good to come out of it.

I don't care if Gesell is a freshman, if he is wide open, which he was, let him take the shot. Basabe was wide open for a dunk.

Honestly, this would have been the best thing anyway, it would show teams something, like you can't run everybody at the guy driving the ball because he never gives it up, not just Marble on that either.

The game was tied, worst thing was OT in the situation, create and dish. Iowa doesn't have players that can win a game in the one on one situation. If Marble is hurt and limited then why put him in a situation to fail?

We can debate this all day long, it still comes down to Iowa not having an identity on offense and when Gesell doesn't get a shot from 3:33 on there is a problem, plus maybe if he does there is no situation at the end of the game where Marble has to isolate.

The last one the mattered

That uni looks like Grandma sewed it by hand from urine-soaked sheets.

End of game, it's iso time.
Besides Clemmons, I'm not sure anyone else is going to be able to get a clean shot off.
Dev had the shot, almost made it.

By going iso with 5 secs to go you virtually eliminate the chance of losing the game in regulation. Call it the Ferentz mentality, but I'd rather not chance a bad pass or other turnover and give it back to Purdue with time left.

Iowa got a clean look and left no time on the clock. Cannot expect more. Sure, Marble is in a slump, but it was a good look, one that usually goes down for him. Mel almost got the putback too.

When it comes to an end of the game type of play Marble is the only one on one player we have. Our pgs don't create their own shots and can't get around anyone very easily anyway. Marble got a couple good looks he just doesn't seem to realize there is a backboard that you can aim for when your at an angle that will increase your shot making ability alot. That last one especially if he'd have kissed that off the glass game over. Thats either not knowing where he was on the court or just indecision on the shot. He should have used the glass on that shot 10 out of 10 times.

I think Sapp could have gotten his floater off, but I'd rather put it in Iowa's most experienced playmaker's hands at the end of the game.
The guy that coaches the team and sees them every day drew it up that way as well.

It is only good when it works.

What is frustrating is Iowa went away from what they were doing that got them the lead to begin with.

I feel like every time I watch a team run an iso play at the end, it looks sloppy as crap. It only really seems to work if you have superstar talent. And we don't have that.

I guess for Iowa though, it isn't a whole lot different than when they go into droughts. One guy dribbling and the other four watching.

Ball movement, screening and less dribbling is good for Iowa.

Ill never understand why teams quit running their offense for a last shot. You never know with Iowa's players though, someone would probably throw some garbage up with 10 seconds left in the game.

Like Spank said, ISO is what you do at the end of games when it's tied. Izzo, Boeheim, Calhoun, Roy, they all do it. It guarantees you the last shot. You either win or go to overtime.

You can't guarantee that if you run screens. You could not get a shot off, shoot to early and give the other team a chance to win in regulation, etc.

I get your point, but Iowa had enough time to run other action prior to letting Marble drive instead of standing around watching. Marble didn't have to give the ball up, but at least move and not watch.

Also, Marble had two wide open guys on the drive, one for a dunk and one for a short jumper. If Marble is playing well, I have no issue with him taking the shot, he isn't, so it comes down to another dribble drive being a black hole.

It's not about how much time is left (as long as the shot clock is off or very close to the game clock).
You don't want to have all 5 players responsible for the end of game situation. Leave it up to one guy to create his own shot or drive and dish. You are taking the other variables out of the equations. What if you start your offense and your wing gets double-teams and trapped? Bad pass? Etc..

Two things can happen (most of the time) when you go iso - you win or you go into OT.

Iowa is 0-8 (I think that's what I counted) on final possessions where they needed to make a basket to tie or win under Fran. I don't know what's common here but I do know that's annoying.

Spank, only one player on the roster has a concept of this and I don't believe he was on the floor...Clemmons

Iowa does such a poor job at attempting to find the open man off of penetration and what is funny is that Basabe, White and Gesell do great jobs at putting themselves in places to receive passes, but it is rare that the ball ever comes to them.

I don't disagree.
Sapp was in the doggie house twice yesterday.
