Why Marble?

With Hammons out, I thought we would pound the ball into Basabe. Oh well, it's an L now. Makes no difference at this point.

Who else would you prefer? And don't say Jizzele because he had one decent scoring game.

Well, since he was on fire, it made the most since to take him out when he hit 3 straight shots and not bring him back after the 30 second timeout. He didn't get shot in the game after he came back and through OT, makes a lot of sense.

Gesell has been hitting more shots lately especially when Iowa has needed them. It makes no sense to take the ball completely out of his hands when he was getting shots and finding guys from the screen action.

If this was his only "decent" game as you call it, maybe I agree, but he has been playing well.

Given this team's makeup Marble is really our only option. We dont have anyone who can consistently get off a shot and no one to throw it to on the post. If you design a play for Gesell coming off a screen there is a 50% chance he will be covered and cant separate to get his own shot off the dribble.

Marble had a wide open 6 footer that he just needs to make

Not really when Marble hasn't proven he can take over anything in his career. Sorry, he just hasn't, he is a good player, but I have no clue why you wouldn't run a double screen with Gesell running a curl through the lane to the elbow, or running a screen and roll and Gesell getting the same shot, oh yeah and MG hit his FT's when it mattered the most as well.

Off topic, but when was the last time the Hawks made a shot at the buzzer to win a game? Seems like forever...

Probably Cartwright at Indiana in 2010-11. Then he had the same pullup baseline jumper to beat Wisconsin at the buzzer that rimmed out and we lost in OT. That one's still seared into my memory for some reason.

I was wondering why Marble doesn't use the backboard more often, he misses a lot of close shots because he refuses to use it.

I agree...how many times did our coaches in middle school or high school tell us that? I effin screamed that out when the shot went up....."Use the G*d Da*n glass."

Exactly. He got a great look, just didn't make it. Good call by Fran--all the way down to the clock management.

I was actually talking about this the day before the game. I thought it was going to happen for sure since I just talked about it. For some reason I don't remember the Cartwright one. I was thinking it was Recker when he hit them in back to back games in the big 10 tourney.

Both my father and I have notice this trend with all the players. They'd seem to shoot looking for the fouls first. Anyone else notice this? A lot of stripped balls with arms flaring out, and then a puzzled look to a ref. this team seems to beg for more calls then Italy's national World Cup teams.

Even the announcers are starting to notice. Marble looked for the foul instead of worrying about making the shot a few times last night.

I don't care that he got a look, other than the fact that he missed it, big surprise.

Marble is not the guy I want taking the shot at the end of a game, ever.

The only positive out of it was Purdue had no time.

When Iowa's players drive, the players around them do a good job at getting open, problem is, when Iowa players drive, outside of Clemmons, they become black holes and rarely does anything good come from it.

Wrap around pass to Basabe, Iowa wins with a dunk. Kick to Gesell, who was shooting well from 15ft. and I like Iowa's chances far better than Marble not taking advantage against a smurf.

Mike Gesell is good. But he can't create his own shot. It's idiotic for the OP to think he should have taken the last look.

You will ask, why didn't we run him off some screens for the last shot?? Well, what if he wasn't open? Than he has the ball with 3-5 seconds to play and the kid literally can't create his own shot and shot over a bigger defender.

Coach made the right call to go with Marble

You do realize that Mike was doing just fine when Iowa set a screen of worth because he was quick enough to beat the big guy that was hedging on him?

The pick is the most utilized play used in the NBA, it is one of the simplest plays, but so effective. Iowa has the players to play that game, would like to see it a lot more. Incorporate the mid-range game and cuts to the basket.

There is no argument that can be made to me that Marble was the best option at that time, not one.

Marble had a bad game shooting, except from the free throw line. Unless the point was to get him to draw a foul which is dang near impossible to get that call at the end of a game. I agree with you, Marble wasn't on at all the whole game. I would have tried a screen with Gesell.

Given I am no basketball coach, but Marble wasn't shooting well, Gesell was so go with the hot hand.

You understand basketball? Purdue wouldn't have hedged a screen set for Gesell, they simply would have switched. So now with 3 seconds left we have Mike with a taller guy on him and the inability to create his own shot.

Fran's not an idiot. He knows who is ISO scorers are in that situation and the only one on this team is Marble (despite his struggles) because he has length.

I do understand basketball, but my point is Marble hasn't shown the ability to drive and score this year against anyone. He did so much better last year and Gesell was the guy that I liked in that situation. It can start with Marble, but end with someone else, believe me that is not a bad thing.

Also, if Iowa players weren't black holes when they drove there were two other guys wide open for the win. Basabe for a dunk and Mike for a jumper, plenty of time considering Basabe had good chance for a put back with nobody within four feet of him.

Fran isn't an idiot and you will never see me type that or even think that.
