Why keep Erb?

Okay, let's go at this from a different angle. I have stated my feelings about Erb all the way back to when the receivers were underachieving and imploding under him.

But, some of you seem to feel very strongly about keeping him. Well, I would like to give you the opportunity to make your case. Tell us what you think Erb has done to deserve to keep his job.

I don't know that u hang him for that, but there's certainly enough evidence to support a reasonable discussion.

When Lester Erb was the WR coach, there were a couple of years of high attrition, including quite a few kids who got into legal trouble. Hard to buy the argument that Lester is just unlucky when this the second go-around for mass defections at the position that he coaches. 5 RBs in less than 2 years (could be more to follow) says it all.

Will the Iowa media ask some tough questions to Kirk about Lester Erb?

how about this: you make a case to support the thread you started 'why keep erb'.

list your first hand knowledge of said coach. his strengths, his weaknesses. etc.

do you think he supplied our RBs mary? do you think he helped them 'run around' or otherwise not go to class'? do you think he was in collusion with other position coaches to get their players to leave, or run into trouble as well? back when he was wr coach, that wasn't the only position with 'issues'. for example - there was a rb involved with the 'sex assault case' who is no longer around......many more obvious examples.....

please be specific.

Erb was moved off receivers and Soup came in and had the two best performers in team history two years running. Don't you think the same thing might be possible if you bring in a top flight RB coach?

He recruits Illinois. He has brought in some recruits. But seriously, who couldn't recruit there for Iowa?

I don't have any idea, and really neither do you. Erb may be Iowa's best recruiter and that's why KF put him in a very important location. That's the best theory I have anyway.

I'd rather have our best recruiters in Florida and Texas.

Something about Jimmy and Joes and Xs and Os. But physically, yeah, Hinkel and Ochoa had all the tools necessary to be as good as DJK and McNutt, so clearly Erb was the problem. Soup was going to get Sandeman a number 1 WR spot on an NFL roster, but decided not to.

I still don't understand why people blame coaches for kids leaving when they screw up off the field.

As for recruiting better kids, I think Coker was the picture prefect recruit in HS.

Why? Illinois is so important to the success of the Iowa football program, why would you sacrifice there to try and fight the local competition in Florida and Texas?

I think I'd rather send my best recruiters to the midwest but maybe I'm wrong.

This is a valid argument. You can't question what Soup has done at a position where Erb more or less was average. Erb moves to the RB position and Special Teams role and we have been plagued by issues at both.

Erbs' claim to fame as the RB coach has been Shonn Greene, which he inherited as a Sr. Since he took over, ARob, Wegher, Hampton, Coker and others have left the program. It can't simply be coincidence can it?

Prior to the past season, our Special Teams play was pretty damn good. Erb was in charge of ST's. Maybe he has taken on too large of a role?

What people don't get is we pull these kids from really different environments and then stick them in Iowa. Having a coach who can relate to the players and who the players can relate is extremely important. Go back and look at comments players made about Aiken and Carl Jackson. These men were extremely important to the program because of these special relationships.

When Aiken left I was very concerned about replacing him with the polar opposite Kacz. I stated the same concerns when Jackson was replaced by Erb. And those chickens have come home to roost.
