Why Gessel?

The motion offense is HORRIBLE when we need to get off a quick shot. Defenders know the spots we are running to, and simply beat us to those spots. The motion needs more time to get an open guy, and that KILLS us when we need a quick 3. It has been this way trying to get open 3's at the end of the game since Fran got here.

We don't run motion exclusively. We also run half court sets in certain situations.

Not having a pg who can create shots for himself or others kills us, all game.

In MikeG's defense he got to the rim, he just ran into a 6'10 250lbs C who has quicker hands than he does.......

I mean seriously, how do you let the C steal the ball from you like that as a PG?

I was pretty upset with Gesell watching it live. After watching the replay though, i give credit to the Minnesota defender. He probably makes that steal clean 1 out of 10 times. If they call a foul there, we're in pretty good shape.

I didn't watch a replay...wanted to forget about the game as quickly as possible. Was there even a shooter spotted up for a shot? I was thinking the guys were all standing pretty much together in one spot and once Gesell got himself in the lane he had no other options. I'm not saying he was looking to kick but I'm not sure a shooter presented himself to take the 3.

I'm not sure he would have had an open passing lane anyway. It's even possible he intended to do a jump pass to someone after the point where he got stripped. There isn't really much to say other than good play by the other team.

He's been average lately, it just seems good compared to what he gave us earlier in the year.

Good God, man! What would you call good? In the two games before last night he was 11-16 from the field with 12 assists while holding down the opposing point guards to well below their season averages.

FG% is irrelevant. Iowa held Minnesota to a 40% shooting pct last night. But Iowa allowed them more shot opportunties because they turned the ball over and allowed the Gophers about 3 or 4 offensive rebounds at critical times in the second half.

A team doesn't need to shoot 50% every game to win. Actually, 43% is usually good enough when you're holding opponents to 40%.

Fair enough. I will edit with 43% Combined with 16 turnovers Is a death stroke.

I've done my share of Gesell bashing this year but last night I'm not sure he had a choice but to throw something up. He could have picked a better shot but a little bit earlier the players treated the ball like it was nitroglycerin and tried to get it out of their hands as soon as possible. I've never seen a team that didn't have at least one player who wants the ball at the end of the game.

After reading Fran's post game, I'm pretty sure what happened is they focused on moving the ball around because it was pointed out to them that they shoot the ball better when they pass the ball at least 3 times. Then for some reason we had random bad shooters chucking up long 2's left and right. Fran probably restressed the game plan after those shots. After that everyone was afraid to shoot the ball any more. Those quick shots by Uhl, Gesell, and White absolutely ruined the entire game.

LOL offensive rating isn't just about scoring stupid. Gesell has a 22.8 TO rate by far the highest of his career, you know it's generally not good for your pg to give the ball back to the defense that often. He's only had less than 3 TO's once in the last six games, he's only had more than 3 assists twice in the last six games. So that's a huge fail, try again please!
Before telling me to try again. At 22.8 turnover ratio isn't even accurate but if gessell has 22.8 assists to every turnover...then he should be in the NBA now laughing at this thread. Maybe try 2.0. Nice try. U must try and push doors open that say pull

Aaron White was the worst player on the court tonight on both ends. No question. Idc if he ended up with 13. Thinks he's gonna get a call every time and plays the laziest defense I've ever seen. He's looked like an all about me player this year that has got caught up in the spot light.
This.
