Why Ferentz is a Great Coach

1. He has won almost 60% of his games during his tenure at Iowa. In the modern era, only Forest Evashevski had a significantly higher winning percentage. Fry was about the same. Ferentz in all probability will become the all-time winningest coach at Iowa before he retires.
2. He tries to play by the rules.
3. A high percentage of his players graduate.
4. He gives back to the University and the community.
5. He is loyal to his players and his coaches.

Someday he won't be the head coach at Iowa. I'm not sure when that day will be, but when he is gone you will miss him and the character and integrity he displayed during his coaching days at Iowa. He is one of the all-time greats.

The negativity on this board is hard to understand for me. I guess I'm just too stupid to comprehend it.

6. He smells amazing.

It is overwhelmingly the losses.

I understand that the manner of losses/lack of competitiveness is adding insult to injury, but without the injury, the insult doesn't hurt nearly as much.

If we were 8-0, but were outplayed/outcoached in each game, but won by sheer happenstance each of the games we have played, I don't think folks would be nearly as upset, if at all. For reference, see a few of the first 9 games of 2009 (UNI, MSU, and Indiana come to mind).

That's a pretty ridiculous statement. Just sayin.

Admitted. It is an extreme example used to highlight a logical truth.

Feel free to put 6-2 in there. Folks wouldn't be nearly as upset if we had two fewer losses, even if our team wasn't any better.

Except it's not logical at all lol...that's the point. My point is logical because it doesn't include something that has never happened in the history of mankind. You're trying way too hard bro.

You're right. People aren't mostly upset about losing. They are mostly upset about poor coaching (see Capital One Bowl) and poor play (see Indiana 2009).

Cool. One example for each. Good work! Need a shovel LG?

Shovel for what?

You cannot refute that people are upset overwhelmingly because we are losing games. If we play like crap, coach like crap, and win, people don't get nearly as upset as when we play like crap, coach like crap, and lose.

My question to you was not a strawman.

You are engaging in pure speculation (with a healthy portion of revisionist history) up in here. Don't whine when you are called out for it.

This post reminds me of that part in Talladega Nights when Glenn says, "Hey, it's not always bad to be in last place. Here's some things we can focus on: One, we tried hard. And two, we're all dear friends!"

Wow--this is insane. You guys are completely missing the forest for the trees.

First--see my post where I admitted that the 8-0 was an extreme example to prove the underlying point that it is the losses that are driving the overwhelming majority of the anger of the fan-base. Using logical extremes is a common technique in logical analysis. Didn't they teach you that while you were at Iowa?

Second--it is the losses that are driving the overwhelming majority of the anger of the fan-base.

Third--it is the losses that are driving the overwhelming majority of the anger of the fan-base.

Fourth--it is the losses that are driving the overwhelming majority of the anger of the fan-base.

At least in the NFL, if you finish dead last, you get a higher draft pick! In college football, it just means you suck.

I'd like to be wrong on this, but frankly, I feel that Ferentz has taken us as far as he has been able to, and we've seen the best that we're going to see. I can't say with a straight face that I think KF has stopped caring, but I believe the game has passed him by and he doesn't have the fire in his belly that he had 10 years ago. I'm not touting that as fact, it's just a theory I'm starting to believe more in the more I think about it.

I'm not sure I see another big turnaround coming like we had in 2008/09.. Again, I'd like to be wrong. Does it mean I've given up? No. It's just my gut feeling.

It's not one game LG. It's several seasons. In 2010 we went 8-5 which is a winning record. How many people are excited about 2010? It's not JUST the losses...AGAIN. It's how we're losing and who we're losing to. Seems like quite a simple thing.

Aside from the seasons where he won more than 7 games, the thing I like most about Kurt is that he hasn't changed the uniforms. That's on my bulleted list. I hear he's a good driver, too.
