Why do you hate Norte Dame?

army vet, the game you described is the exact reason I despise ND. I was about 13 years old at that time & listened to every Hawk game on the radio. Hawks got jobbed in an unbelievable, shameless fashion. I could never reconcile how the good religious leaders of ND allowed that to happen.
I wish some reader of this thread could confirm, but as I recall, after the game Evy said something to the effect, "When the great scorer comes to write against your name, its not whether you won or lost but how we got screwed at Notre Dame."
That game was one of the early markers that the Hawks under Evy would be a force to contend with, both in the Big 10 as well as on a national scale. Evy put the Hawks on the map!!!

In 1953, Iowa Coach Forest Evashevski had the Hawkeyes rated number 20 in the nation when they played Notre Dame in the Hawkeyes last game of the year. Notre Dame was undefeated and had been ranked number 1 throughout the entire season. Notre Dame was led by halfback Johnny Lattner who would go on to win the 1953 Heisman trophy. Iowa was leading 7-0 with only 2 seconds left in the first half. ND had the ball on the Iowa 6 yard line but had no time outs left. ND then proceeded to do the only thing they could do: THEY CHEATED! A ND lineman fell over in a dead faint. The refs stopped the clock with 2 seconds left while the player was miraculously revived, and assisted off the field. While this was occurring the ND offense lined up and as soon as the refs started the clock the ball was hiked and the play resulted in a touch down pass. 7 to 7 at half time.
Second half Iowa scored a touch down with only 2:06 remaining in the fourth quarter to take a 14-7 lead. ND had no time outs left. The Iowa Hawkeyes in only Coach Evashevski's second year at Iowa, was on the brink of upsetting the number 1 ranked team in the nation. What was ND going to do? You probably guessed it. THEY CHEATED. ND drove 60 yards in the next 8 plays, After each play one or more ND players would be motionless on the field, faking an injury which would stop the clock and allow the ND offense to line up for the next play.Touch down with 6 seconds left on the clock. Tie game. Quote from announcer Bob Brooks, "...players were falling over like they had been shot".

Thats good stuff there. Thanks for the contribution.

Meh, I don't care enough to hate them. They do less with more, as well as any team in the nation. They also hold themselves to a higher standard. Um... Yeah right. Tell me another one.

I guess I don't really hate ND itself. But I do loathe Brian Kelly. The man forced a kid to go up in a scissor lift, when he didn't want to, during high winds. Lift blew over and kid was killed.

But hey, we gotta film practices.
This is the same thing for me. I dated a girl from South Bend for about 5 months and during that time I became fond of them. Then they hired Brian Kelly and came to hate them. Felt like he has always been a whiner and then the scissor lift incident happened and they got out without any punishment. Essentially he forced the kid to go up the scissor lift even though he didn't feel comfortable doing it and it cost the kid his life. There should of been more done but since it was Notre Dame it was swept under the rug like many things in the Catholic Church.

My dad was a kid when this game happened. And he would talk about this game years later when I was a kid. On Saturdays we worked around the house and listened to Zabel and the Hawks. I remember the disgust in his voice but dad never said he hated ND.

But these were the very lean years of Iowa football. Not much to cheer for. But when i checked the Sunday Peach for scores, ND was one of the first I would look up and did a fist-pump when they lost.

Millennials might remember Michigan State's injury plagued game against Iowa. ND was worse.

The were nicknamed THE FAINTING IRISH.

Evy had a great quote couple days after the game.

"When that One Great Scorer comes
To write against our name
He won't write whether we won or lost
But how we got gypped by Notre Dame."

ND fell to #2 losing the first bid of a wire to wire NC. Maryland took the AP #1 and the school's only championship. Iowa jumped from #20 to #9.

ND took a big PR hit. Later on, ND players would laugh about it. When Evy became Iowa AD the Irish were dropped from the schedule.

Can't stand ND.
