Peyton McCollum will be joining the Iowa men's basketball team. Even if he isn't on scholarship, isn't Iowa limited to 15 roster spots overall?

I think Goetz may have wanted to have a hard conversation on this one. Explain the circumstances. And strongly suggest young McCollum could either join the program as a student manager, or go play somewhere else. And depending on he performed somewhere else, she'd be willing to have a conversation with Ben next spring about the possibility of him joining as a walk-on. But not in year 1.

Is coach Bluder/Jensen the only coaches at Iowa that didn't have a kid play for them?

Lickliter, McCaffrey, Ferentz and Brands (nephew). Hell even Joey Woody has a kid on the track team he coaches. Alford would have if he stayed long enough.

Unless he truly is one of the top 15 that Ben can get to Iowa, it's not a great way to start.

It's not all that unusual at this level of college BB. Izzo and Hoiberg are two that come to mind right away. Of course, Fran. Which I thought both of his kids on scholarship were worthy of it although I know some will disagree. I think it's all how the coach handles it. It doesn't sound as if McCollum's son is a top flight recruit. I think BM is professional enough to not force his kid into unwarranted playing time.

Jan's niece (Kate Martin) played for us.

I agree that walk-on status is in the best interest of the program, but unlike Little Lick, this kid can play. He's not an elite player by any stretch, but from what I understand he's smart and has a good all-around game. His tape reminds me a bit of Jeff Horner.

Meh

I am in agreement with @haydensly, this shit happens all the time. BM knows how to construct a roster, and more importantly, it appears that he will not over pay for dudes…soooo, if he wants to add his kid as a walk-on… I’m good with it.

I'm going to call him lil Lick until he earn 20 min per game playing time.
You have to keep in mind that Ben's offense involved passing the ball around and getting the ball to an open shooter from the outside. His son does have one of the highest shooting percentages from three point land.

Four star recruits were what we were told Fran's boys were. In my opinion a three star rating for them would have been a more accurate rating. I remember when a three star was pretty damn good, but now four star rating are given out like candy. It doesn't seem to mean much anymore.

Look at what Ben did with his star pupil at the guard position. Was the kid even rated before he went to to play under Ben? Great coaching usually leads to great players who know how to maximize their best strengths. Olson was a great coach because he took what players he had and drew up an offense and defense that maximized the teams capabilities. He did it at Iowa and he did it at Arizona.

Let's not jump to judgement too quick. Let's see first if we might have a "New Lute" in Iowa City first. By the way that was Iowa's last final four................. 1980. Damn that's been almost 46 years ago and that's too dame long.

Unfortunately the little sisters to the west have had far more success in March madness and that's embarrassing for Iowa fans given the money and facilities advantage we should have. Several times they have gotten to sweet 16's. Just off of the top of my head I think our last one was around 1986-87. Mr. Davis's first year at Iowa with Raveling recruits. He got to an elite eight before falling to UNLV and their towel sucking coach.

If this blows up in our face I don't see more than three years for Ben.

It could be a godsend on the other hand and then fans will be wringing their hands waiting for Kansas or North Carolina to swoop in and steal him away. Damned if do and damned if your don't.

Coach McCollum has had incredible success thus far in his coaching career. Three national titles followed by taking Drake to the second round of the Dance last season while Iowa fans watched from home.

He's committed and focused on continuing his success at Iowa. As a lifelong Hawkeye fan, he's fully aware of the history of Hawkeye father/son combos. Peyton McCollum was first team all-state as a senior. Coach McCollum isn't going to jeopardize his time at Iowa with a nepotism fiasco.

There's a lot of optimism out there about the new era. Patience please, Hawks fans. Let's not jump to conclusions months before Fall practice has even begun.

GO HAWKS!!
