Why Barta Signed Ferentz Long Term

Ferentz started his successful run at Iowa in 2001 after two rebuilding years. In the last 17 years, Ferentz has won 139 games at Iowa. How have the other Big Ten powers done during the same time period (the last 17 years)? The results may surprise you:

1. Ohio State 173 wins
2. Wisconsin 150
3. IOWA 139
4. Penn St 139
5. Nebraska 139
6. Michigan 138
7. Sparty 133
8. NW 113***

***Based on data found at Winnsipedia Website

Bottom line, Ferentz has gone toe-to-toe with Penn State, Nebraska and Michigan during the 17 year stretch, and exceeded Michigan State and Northwestern. Only Ohio State and Wisconsin have exceeded Iowa. Please note that Michigan, Penn State and Nebraska are 3 of the top programs in all-time wins and national championships, but have been equaled or eclipsed by Ferentz during his 17 year run.

Ferentz has done a remarkable job at Iowa.

Yes those are interesting numbers. KF is consistently above average. Not awesome, close to great maybe. He will be known for some great seasons, some big wins, but also for losing a lot of games he probably should have won. I will say KF has lost 1+ games a year he could have or should have won in those 17 years. Add those in and he and the hawks have 156 wins, wow that would be great at 9 wins a year. That is what I would call great.

He has been a very good head coach.

Wisky was already good by 2001 and they are great now. PSU suffered their own self inflicted wounds but only for a couple of years.

Comparing the last 17 years seems kind of arbitrary. KF signed his last contract after the 2015 season. It would be interesting to compare the last 10 years before that contract from 2006-2015. That seems like a fair comparison.

I just checked Wisky's wins the last 17 years and it comes to 161, not 150. What other team's win totals did you fudge?

I just went thru the top programs and here's the real numbers:

OSU - 185 (they did have to vacate 12 wins in 2010, but they still won those games)
Wisky - 161
Neb - 140
Iowa - 139
PSU - 139
MSU - 133

Michigan is at 138. All of my numbers were accurate except Wisconsin's, which I missed (but I already conceded that they had surpassed Iowa).

You guys just can't admit that Ferentz is a great coach. You have an agenda. I get it.

For Iowa to have the same number of wins as Nebraska, Penn State and Michigan over the last 17 years is astounding. All of the comments on this board about Ferentz being a poor coach are simply ridiculous and not backed up by the facts.

Yes, I missed one season of Wisconsin. The other team's wins totals are accurate. My point stays the same and it is supported by facts, not vitriol. People on this board attack Ferentz without checking the data. They have no facts, and therefore they have no credibility. As Jack Nicholson says, THEY CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH.

You'll reach basically the same conclusion if you do the math for the last 10 years. Ferentz has been remarkably consistent at Iowa. Ohio State and Wisconsin have done better over the past 10 years, but Iowa is toe-to-toe with Penn State, Michigan and Nebraska during the last 10. I'm sure Michigan State is better because of Dantonio, but not a huge difference.

Barely better than UM during their lean years. Middle of the pack.

Ferentz has been a very good head coach, but way too many losses to lesser programs and games where Iowa was favored keep him out of the "great" territory for me.

Tulsa, Western Michigan, Northern Illinois, and ND State all have victories over Iowa during KF's tenure. Add to that (multiple) losses to Iowa State, Minnesota, and Northwestern when the Hawks were favored, to name a few.

I don't expect Iowa to win them all, but I do expect losses to directional schools to be EXTREMELY rare, and I also expect the Hawks to win the vast majority of games where they are heavy favorites.

Too many losses in these categories over the years.

Keep in mind those 3 programs have all gone through some rough periods since 2001. Nebraska has fallen so far since 2001 that they've dropped from the elite/blue blood level to a just above average Power 5 program.

Michigan has gone through 4 coaches in the last 11 years.

From 2001-2015, Penn State was very good in 2002, 2005, 2008 & 2009 and was pretty meh the rest of those years until 2016 when they took off again.

Kind of an old argument. I do think he knows how to coach and sometimes does a very good job. The issues with your comment thought:

Consistently above average.

He has been a very good coach

How would his record stand against tenured coaches?

Being 7-5 isn't above average for P5.

Like Fran, he has some very big holes in his approach to coaching and yes even on fundamentals. Especially at the skill positions.

I remember Hayden Fry had a team that lost at Tulsa, but I don’t recall a Ferentz team losing to Tulsa.

The others you mentioned all still hurt, as do the other losses to teams that were double digit underdogs to us. Especially the ISU losses.

My bad. Iowa played Tulsa in the first game of the 1993 season and won by one point, 26-25.

Edit: Replace Tulsa with Central Michigan, and we are all set.

This.

Excuse me. But if we're simply comparing BigTen teams, why aren't we just looking at BigTen wins? There's WAY too many variables in non-conference scheduling for this to mean anything.
Because some of the people on this board are really really F@#%ing stupid :)

right, but those programs are also paying buyouts and 2 or 3 coaching staffs at a time.... so in hindsight, who's bad at contracts?
