Who's been our best player since Alford left.

Gatens had one great stretch where he made 12 consecutive 3's. It was one of the greatest shooting preformances I've ever seen from an iowa player. Other than that stretch though, he was just a decent player who had a good senior year. And by decent player i mean a decent player for a Big 10 starter.

Best overall: marble

Player I wish we could magically bring back for a year: Gatens

If you could have any player in the last 30 years back for home stretch? Woolridge

Devyn Marble and it's not even close..

IMO no way on Aaron White he just disappears in way to many games. White would come in last with those guys you mentioned. 1. Marble 2. Gatens 3. Cole 4. White

I would put Uthoff ahead of White. AW does disappear, where JU has been clutch on multiple occasions. If White could learn to finish, instead of throwing the ball out of bounds and his arms in the air, while the ref just stares blankly at the flop, it would be a much different story....
White is very valuable to this team. He has some interesting stats. But to be top Hawk, you have to be able to carry the load And finish when it matters most. Unfortunately, that is not his game.

Looking at the whole body of work. NIT run was fun, but that was the NIT. He could not do it in the Big Ten on consistent basis.

Sets/plays were ran late in games for guys like McCabe or Olgseby they either turned the ball over or clanked open looks. That wasn't on Marble. Probably the only guy that was able to get his own shot since Hulaska.

Marble is over-rated imho. Really not clutch when it matters. Not that he is not a good player and he certainly brought things to the table. And, how many times has Marble been demoted this year to the developmental league???

For me, it is Matt Gatens. Imagine if he was on this currrent team. That guy came on strong his senior year and that guy wanted to be a Hawk. Gatens by a mile.

Great players,both..But my nod goes to Gatens. He was the glue to the team his Jr and Sr years. Real travesty he played on horrible teams and for a horrible coach in Lick. With a cold blooded assasin shooter like Gatens can you imagine how good this years team and last would have been. That was the kind of shooter I thought we got in Ogles when he came.......

Hard to say. Marble probably wouldn't have been as good on the Lick teams and Gatens probably would have been better on some of the recent teams.

Imagine Gatens in Oges role on this team.

I think we'd all like to have Gatens AND Marble on this team. Let's all predict our W/L record with those 2 and Fran's world class coaching. At this point I would just be happy if Iowa could hire a coach in a revenue-generating program who wasn't dedicated to getting his son playing time on national television.

I'm expecting a letter in the mail any day informing me my alma mater is changing its name to Nepotism State University.

Ben Brust. Oh wait, your coach couldn't keep the commitment that even Todd Lickliter didn't mess up. Second has to be Uthoff. Followed by Gatens. Marble disappeared way too much. I remember seeing your play-in game against Tennessee last year and Marble was absolutely horrible. Good ball players play well in big games.

Dev, although I also think he contributed to last year's slump. Cole was a solid Hawkeye -- he was forced to play a position above his physical size and skill set and his body took a pounding every game. But he battled hard every minute and left it all on the floor, and I loved him for that.

On my list, Uthoff is rising with a bullet and could be No. 1 when all is said and done. Without his play and a couple key, difficult baskets late, we don't even take lowly Northwestern to OT yesterday. Chew on that with your eggs and bacon this morning. Ugh.

Ordered your Hawk ... er Wildcat ... season tickets yet, Partner? Was Fatty Pitz standing outside Welsh-Ryan handing out order forms yesterday?

BTW, hope you didn't go home and kick teh dog after yesterday's game bince Someone would kill you if you did. Just sayin...

So, you think Iowa football is the ONLY team in college sports that has a father/son (or father/daughter or mother/son or mother/daughter) combination in the nation? Really? Aren't you cute?

Michigan (John/Jay Harbaugh) is one, even though Harbaugh hasn't coached a single game there yet. Louisville (Rick/Rich Pitino) used to be one until the son was hired by Minnesota. There are many other examples. Heck, it even happens in the pros: Marty/Kurt Schottenheimer, Pete/Nate Carroll and Bill/Steve Belichick (and I'm sure there are others).

As a Badger fan, Gatens was the killer. He had some dynamite games against UW and carried a very weak team to victories in Fran's first couple years. Remember when "Fran owns Bo"? That was all Gatens

Yikes! So that run to the NIT title game wasn't clutch? You should cheat on your taxes, the IRS can't prosecute you if you can prove your memory is broken.

Check his shooting stats. He took nearly as many shots as the next twos guys on the team put together (White and Gessel)..and had something like the 7th best shooting percentage. That's brutal. The much-maligned Oglesby had a better 3 pt %...as did Jok and Uthoff. Also, watch all the games...he missed as many big shots as he made.

He scored more...because he shot so damn much more.

Sorry, Fran. I know that's not what you remember.

(gets popcorn and barcalounger to read all the "NIT doesn't matter" replies)

As a badger fan you should get the h*** off this board.

First, Marble is on, posibly, an NBA team that is more poorly managed than most Lickliter teams. The Magic front office is woeful, they just fired their coach, and his replacement may be worse than the guy they fired.

Marble has played more NBA games than Gatens ever played.

Marble has also played more NBA games than Shurna played, but Shurna was still the better collegiate player.

Sam and Steve Alford was a pretty potent combination in Iowa City, too. Doug Collins gives Chris Collins some pointers and Chris has done pretty well at Northwestern.
