Who would you rather have. Kirk Cousins or Marvin McNutt

Michigan St. QB Kirk Cousins grew up a die hard Hawkeye fan. His whole life he dream't of playing for the Hawks but instead another QB named Marvin McNutt got the scholarship and cousins was eventually picked up by State. If you could go back and change things would you rather have McNutt or Cousins on the Hawks roster? Personally I'd want Marvin on the team, but before I found out the potential that James Vandenburg had I would have probably picked Cousins, also JV's favorite target seems to be McNutt. Leave you opinon below on who you'd choose.

Pretty biased here, but definately McNutt. Stanzi is very comparable to Cousins IMO, giving the edge to Cousins in that regard, but not by much. McNutt has blossomed into an All-B10 type WR with NFL caliber skills and intangibles. Iowa hasn't had such a thing in awhile.

Personally, I'd take both. Knowing what we do now, obviously I recruit Marvin as a WR to begin with. We don't sign Satterfield (would have saved us a lot of trouble), and sign Cousins as a QB. But I know there's no way anyone would have thought like that at the time.

Nutter...he's a better WR than he would have been as a QB, and last thing we need is another QB battle (till next year at least)

In Kirk We Trust...

...if the staff chose McNutt then I'm all for it. It'd be ignorant of us fans to think we know better than the coaching staff in making these decisions.

Besides, Ricky is 18-4 as a starter and JVB looks like a legit candidate to step in next year to take on the starting role for a couple of years. No offense to Cousins but what has he done with MSU? 6-7 last year with a loss in the Alamo Bowl...yeah, I'm good with "7 got 6" thrown to him by the Americanzi.

That's not even close to fair to Cousins. He has a very nice set of skills (quite possibly the best pure passer in the Big Ten), but doesn't have as much to work with. He also didn't benefit from the kind of defense that Stanzi does. Jones, Gordon, and Rucker are all very good players, but the unit as a whole was VERY inconsistent, especially the secondary. He didn't have a Javon Ringer in the backfield on offense, either.

And the Alamo Bowl? You mean the game where the Spartans were missing 19 players (many of whom were starters or key contributors), yet they were still very much in the game until the closing minutes? Cousins is as good or better than any QB in the Big Ten, and if he had the supporting cast of a Stanzi, Pryor, or Tolzien, he'd be putting up some ridiculous numbers, both in the stat sheet and the win column.

So what you're saying is that you'd rather have Cousins over Stanzi and McNutt??

I won't argue that the RickSix pass is hard to deal with as a team/fan. But I'm not trading Ricky or McNutt for Cousins based on hypothetical stats and how he'd do with Ricky's team. (Not sure how you brought Pryor & Tolzien into this discussion?)

Again, this is a hypothetical question which brings me back to the FACT that the coaches know better than you and I ever could because they met with the kids and evaluated them through and through. Yeah, I'm taking Ricky and the legit receiver we now have in Marvin. Could Cousins have excelled in our system? Sure, but who knows. I'm just not sure how you can argue that other than to say "coulda been"....seems a bit ignorant to me.

Also seems highly un-Americanzi.

I'm a pretty big Ricky fan, don't get me wrong. But Cousins is also a very good QB, one who could very easily play for the Hawks and have much more success (in the win column) if he were in Iowa City. I brought up Tozien and Pryor because they have loaded supporting casts, but I think Cousins is the better QB.

And you don't think that our coaches can miss on guys? McNutt is a prime example. They recruited him to be a QB, and it was quite clear that it wasn't going to work out once he got on campus. Just because he's panned out very well at another decision didn't mean that the coaches whiffed on him to begin with.

Besides, the whole premise of this question "Who would you rather have?", is nothing but a gigantic "what if". I would love to have gotten both, since we now know that McNutt was a wasted scholly as a QB (meaning that if he hadn't changed positions, he likely would have been a bust), and Satterfield was a wasted scholly at WR. Getting Cousins as a QB and McNutt as a WR in the same class would have been huge for us, if for no other reason than it would keep Cousins from playing for MSU.

I feel ya caller, but it wasn't about getting both. And again, I'm going back to putting my money on the coaches making the decision to bring in Mc7. I admire & respect Cousins...but I cannot honestly say that he would have panned out better than Stanzi or McNutt. I think we're both agreeing to disagree here...or at least we see the hypothetical situation in a different light. Who knew about Satterfield...again, not sure how other players are being brought into "Cousins or McNutt".

Like I said, the question itself encourages us to take the "knowing what I know now" approach. And knowing what I know now, I'd have gone with getting both. But, I would rather have McNutt if forced to pick just one. But I don't think we could have gone wrong either way, looking back.

the last part kind of hurt your argument for me TM. you said, "i don't think we could have gone wrong either way". this is where i will have to disagree. we went after mcnutt to play QB and it didn't work out. he's athletic enough to play(and star) at WR. it really worked out for us in the end. could ricky, JV, or cousins make the same switch? HIGHLY unlikely which means we would have 2 guys on the bench just waiting for an injury to whoever is starting at QB.

i think you have to go with mcnutt in this case based on your last sentence

I do hate to turn away hawk fans that are that caliber player because I think they add to the morale of the team. It helps display to the other team memebers how important hawkeye football is to Iowans.
But, I'm sure KF had his reasons and I have no complaints about his recruiting.
I abstain from the vote.
