who was the best college wrestler?

Kyle Dake, what he's (possibly) about to accomplish is amazing, 4 titles, 4 different weight classes, no redshirt, and beating having to beat Taylor to do it.

Yes, Sanderson is undefeated, but he did it in 2 different weights, redshirted, and won't have as marquee a name on his resume like Taylor (though Cormier is pretty nice).

if he gets the job done it will be my #1 of all time hands down

I was just wondering this the other day randomly. does anyone know who Cael all beat in the finals and how many other titles those guys won?

I don't know all that much about wrestling, but I did know about this, and it continues to blow my mind. Even if he doesn't pull off 4 for 4, 3 for 3 is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen in sports.

and especially in this sport tm3308. its crazy to think about

Did Cael lose in his redshirt year? I was told by a very good source that he did. Those don't count though right?

Great survey, with some great match ups. I love stuff that tries to compare eras. Growing up in the late 70s and 80s, I am bias towards those guys who I really looked up to. My choice will be Ed Banach all way. Nothing is better than hearing he Mr. Ed theme while he runs out and then puts a hurt on some dude.

Good one!! I also remember right after that, when the pep band would start playing "skip skip skip to my Lou" and when it got to Lou, the band would stop playing and the packed field house crowd would yell "LOU!!" I too have fond memories of those teams:)

I always thought the choice was simple. It was either Iowa State's Dan Gable or Iowa State's Cael Sanderson. Since the two greatest were Iowa State guys, I think only Iowa State Alumni should comment on it.

OK...It was Cael.

That's what I thought. Was that the only loss or was there more in his redshirt year? That big fat phony

He did avenge that loss the following year (or maybe it was a couple years later) in a big way. Jenn got DQ'ed for stallin. it was rough to watch. however i don't think he should've ever got DQ'ed. i looked at it as more just getting totally dominated than stalling

Yes, he had losses wrestling in tournaments unattached. I don't remember the exact number. He was not unbeatable, just a rare wrestler in style and capability for his size. He wrestled like a 133 at 184 and 197. The other wrestlers just looked so flat footed in comparison. Trenge pinned his way to the finals in Sanderson's final run(Trenge won the following year I believe) and Cael majored the poor guy. Trenge just couldn't keep Sanderson away from the legs.
