Who wants the ball at the end when it is close?

I’d love to see Marble drive and White dive to the hoop for a lob. Or a kick out to Ogs. There’s gotta be a million options at this point because all opponents know is the Marble iso.

it's the same play... screen or no screen - sometimes he waves off the screen sometimes someone sets a high pick- basically whatever marble decides.

Not true...the term ISO comes from the word isolation. It means he is by himself making it happen. When Iowa goes ISO they completely clear everyone out and he is truly one on one. That wasn't the case there was a pick and roll/pop opportunity and a kick out. That is 3 guys involved....definitely not an isolation by definition.

Michael Jordan missed a lot of big shots in his career, yet nobody would suggest that he didn't have ice in his veins. It's not about success or failure when you're talking about whether or not a guy has ice in his veins. It's about knowing failure is a possible outcome and not being afraid to take the chance, anyway. Gesell definitely has that fearlessness.

If Gesell's failures at the line are the product of simply not being a good FT shooter this year, that's not the same as choking.

I never said MG choked, I simply pointed out the fact that he has missed several free throws in big spots this year. I want someone at the line at the end of the game who gives us the best chance to make free throws. Whether Gesell is missing them because he's choking or because he's a poor free throw shooter with ice in his veins is irrelevant (although I will say I've never heard a poor free throw shooter described as having ice in his veins after missing free throws before this thread).
At this point, there is not enough evidence of MG having consistently done that. I would love it if he becomes a cold blooded finisher over the next two years, but right now it's just a wishful narrative.

Nobody actually said he was a finisher. That's definitely the next step. But he's got the hardest part taken care of already (not being afraid to be the guy when it matters most).

I think the big thing is he doesn't fear the big moment or worry about losing if he misses he does what he can and just lives with the outcome. It seems like marble is worried about failure in the late moments and isn't as decisive as he is earlier in games.

You're joking right? If we don't have Marble yesterday hitting that 3 point play towards the end to put us up 5, we may very well see another meltdown of Chernobyl proportions! :D Watching them play yesterday, I would say something has players scared to take shots. We CANNOT afford to have passivity even if that means a player misses a key shot. I'd rather have an assertive miss than NO SHOT at all!

Agree that Marble was our go-to guy in the clutch yesterday. He also takes our last shot when going for the win (hit or miss, usually miss) so I think he's the guy who wants the ball late in a close game. Makes me worry about next year, though. Someone is going to have to step up and be that guy next year, otherwise am not sure where the offense is going to come from consistently. Either that, or Fran better land a good JUCO scorer that can come in and put up stats right away. No projects!

Don't you think Mike Gessell or Josh O. will step in? Maybe even AW if the match up is right.

Someone is going to have to be taking the shots next year that Marble is taking this year, obviously. Losing a 1600-1700+ point scorer is going to hurt, though.

I have hopes that Uthoff will turn into a good scorer for us next year, and hopefully Jok will have a breakout sophomore season. Also the guys you mentioned.

Thank you. Dev is not getting enough credit and it's a shame.

72-70 ball game with 2:39 to go converts the and one to extend the lead to 75-70. It allowed Mike to go 7-9 (77.7%) from the line to seal the game.

I love that we had Mike in the game at the end. I think most on this board recognized he needs to be on the floor more minutes overall. I think we will see Mike's FT% continue to get better. Last year he shot 79% from the line and this year he is down to 66%. He won't get up to 79% but I bet he gets back over 70%.

And TM... you should be smart enough to know that taking the big shots at the end of the game isn't the difficult part. Just ask Dev how much credit one gets for just taking the shot at the end of the game when it doesn't go in.... none.

Not afraid to miss, is that what you mean? Sounds like McCabe before some jokers screwed with his confidence...

Still, Gesell isn't athletic, isn't a good defender, isn't a good free thrower, and isn't a good scorer.
