When will Barta be fired?

I think this is a when question and not if question.

Here is the deal, Barta felt he had a slam dunk case against Meyer. The fact is he didn't and was delusional to think he did. That is why these things are almost always settled in court. Even if Iowa would have won that case they still have a black eye. Even worse was what happened and that was Barta was knocked the **** out. He presented his side and 8 jurors said unanoumously that it was discrimination.

Barta should be fired for this, and immediately if you ask me. Don't appeal the decision, just fire Barta, Pay Meyer and Griesbaum and move on. You have a woman in place as associate AD, now hire someone with a good track record with women as AD and get back to being a university know for equality and fair treatment of all.

While I don't believe for a second that she was discriminated against because of her gender or sexual orientation I do agree that it's time to replace him. That was an unacceptable outcome if he is wanting to keep his job.

KGYM Radio said Barta is under contract until 2021, they said if fired he would most likely take legal action, I'm sure they don't want another court case slapped in their faces.

And there in lies the sticking point.... I see it as that Barta didn't do anything discriminatory towards them at all. As far as firing the field hockey coach goes I really don't see it. Coaches get fired all the time for no reason and in this case he actually had one. Multiple students coming forward claiming abuse isn't something to sweep under rug either after what alls gone on up in Rutgers and Indiana lately. It's just been a domino effect that had no good outcome at all. So womens groups are going to come out and demand what Dean just said in droves and the school due to his contract and the cloud hanging over them of another lawsuit if they dump him is in a no win situation. I think cutting all cords and cleaning house is the only way to go. It's what the PSUs, Baylors had to do. To half ass it would be just delaying how long it'll take for it to truly get done.

The problem is that outsiders that haven't followed this case closely will see it for its conclusion - Iowa got its ass handed to it in the court of law by a former employee and was GUILTY of gender discrimination, sexual orientation discrimination, retaliation, equal pay violation and whistleblower violation.

There's no disputing that. It's the outcome of a trial. Iowa was found guilty of those very serious charges.

It doesn't matter how anyone views what they think should have happened in the case or for those that feel that the jury got it wrong. Perception on a broad scale nationally will be based on the result of the trial. Again, Iowa is guilty of gender discrimination, sexual orientation discrimination, retaliation, equal pay violation and whistleblower violation.

Read those charges again and put yourself in the position of someone that didn't follow the case or the story. It ain't good.

Now, if UI keeps Barta, they are keeping the guy ultimately responsible for these offenses. Then ask yourself, are you OK with others viewing your university as one that was guilty of those violations of the law AND kept the guy in charge?

If he took legal action against the University for firing him he would be a moron in my opinion. How the hell would he win that case? He was just found guilty by 8 jurors of breaking the law. That's more than enough reason to lose your job. He would have no case.

I think he should just do everyone a favor and step down. End this madness right now. The longer he is there the bigger black eye this becomes. He has to realize that. I'm sure it's hard because he doesn't feel like he did anything wrong, but that's the world we live in. He's made a ton of money. Time to walk away bud.

This puts Bruce Herreld who from what I understand took the UI president position reluctantly in the first place in a difficult position. This will go above him in the food chain to the Board of Regents as well it should. Read Christine Grant's reaction to this in Hawk Central to get a feel for the bigger picture. So many things about this case seem unseemly and Meyer certainly comes off as a not very likable character. Barta in many ways has overseen a good old boy culture at Iowa which has come back to seriously bite him in the ass. I don't think for a minute that he openly discriminated but he has treated the mens and womens sides somewhat differently which a jury of average Iowans concluded in the verdict in this case.

Iowa should conduct its outside investigation of hiring processes which Herreld announced and begin work to clean house as this legal process continues to play out. It will likely really cost to fire Barta but they will pay a bigger price to let this situation fester. Many lessons to learn from this and move forward in a new direction.

Herreld extended Barta's contract five years for $4.6M guaranteed last February knowing the Meyer and Griesbaum cases were pending.

I thought Herreld seemed a breath of fresh air when hired but it kind of makes you wonder doesn't it? Many things to sort out and for the coaches life has to go on with all this noise in the background.

He problem is if the people who decide Barta's fate know without a doubt he did nothing wrong. Us on the outside can't know for sure, but people close to the situation might know for sure. It's pretty effed up to fire someone if you know without a doubt they didn't do anything wrong.

Wait:

"We can't know for sure"

"But they know for sure"

Okay, how do we know for sure that they know for sure he didn't do anything wrong? Your statement implies we know what they know . . . when you just said we don't know what they know.

We agree very seldom but this is dead on.

You have this 180 defrees wrong Pc. Some are too close to the situation to understand that what happen IS WRONG in the minds of unbiased jurors. Like I said I don't think they did anything wrong, but the Jury did. Game. Set. Match. Meyer wins, that is the reality now.

I'mnot saying anything is certain. I'm saying it's possible that everyone around her agreed she was horrible at her job. If that's the case, Barta did nothing wrong.

I screwed up one word. I meant to write "people on the inside might know" instead of "do know". The rest of my post was worded with the speculation that was intended. I'll edit it.
