What's the analysis on May?

I did not see the Indiana game - was locked into the Bears game.

Did not see the game tonight.

Why so few shot attempts? How much is he still playing hurt?

I know he is "young" - but I don't see how you can expect a really nice Junior year when he is having this type of year right now.

Any insight would be helpful!

Yeah it seemed really timid today and passed on open looks. When he gets it and he is open he needs to give his teammate a stat boost for assist and take the shot with no hesitation.

Also he needs to make defenses pay when they over pursue, whether its driving and dishing or driving in and trying to catch someone imbalanced to force a foul.

He was fun to watch during Indiana game, but there also was no defensive effort by hoosiers.

May had two pretty impressive jams in back-to-back possessions versus IU. It would seem unlikely to anyone that saw them that he was not 100%. If I hadn't seen them, though, and I saw the line he had tonight, I would think he was still hurt. I am having as hard time figuring it out. he went to the hole strong on the first possession tonight and made it but stepped out of bounds. he looked pretty healthy on that move.

Very passive and unsure. He needs to trust his skills and take the ball to the hole. Too many times he's passed up short jumpers looking instead to pass. In fact the whole team is too passive IMO.

That passivity must kill Fran. Totally against his mind set. This coaching staff really believes in players taking shots they can make. Wonder if he just doesn't feel comfortable with the short jumper? Either that, or he hasn't got over last year's instruction. Either way, he needs to snap out of it because he is the teams' only finish at the rim type who has the athleticism to play on the perimeter.

May, like others on the team, just seem to lack confidence. The offense is to eventually penetrate by dribbling all over the backcourt, then going inside to dish off for a three. Unfortunately, unless guys are wide, wide open they won't shoot the 3. painful to watch. Instead of being ready to recieve and shoot, they wait, fake and pass. If not for Cartwright, this team would have zero leadership on the floor.

May is afraid to rise up and shoot the damn ball. He and Gatens have a lot of 15 foot jumpers that they pass on. May might just be a system player becuase he was to explode in this more open sysytem. May and Gatens could also use a back to the basket game, learn a little baby hook so they can take advantage of a match up like they had tonight when Battle was on Gatens a few times tonight.

Looks like a great kid that might be overmatched in the Big 10, inconsistent like everyone else on the team, Im going to stay patient and positive until watching the team next yr, we cant blame Fran for this, these are Lick's players, Fran brought in Baasbe and Cartwright, and kept 2 of Licks recruits, marble and McCabe, if we are still struggling to win 2 games in the big 10 by next feb. it may spell trouble. I love Fran's coaching style he just needs to uprade the talent. We are a sleeping Giant!!

Last year, (I can't remember the opponent) May took the ball on the wing, dribbled it into the post, and casually elevated for a short turn around jumper over his defender. It was similar to the way Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan have scored a lot of their points over the years.

I remember seeing that and thinking to myself "Wow, he could really be a weapon with moves like that."

I haven't seen him do that again since that game. I agree that he just needs more confidence. I really want him to start dunking on people in traffic, but easier said than done.

While that's true, he can also shoot, he just doesn't do it enough. Dude's hitting like 48% from 3 pt range this year. Just doesnt shoot enough.

He really did work on his shooting during the off season and seems to have a good stroke from behind the arc.

Eric May is a Big 10 caliber player the issue with Eric May is he is not a player who is ever going to be the best/2nd/3rd best player on a good Big 10 team in my opinion.

You can say the same thing about Matt Gatens.

Iowa needs to infuse talent at the PG and Wing spot. Iowa needs at least two very good consistent dribble drive threats. The roster just doesn't have those players really.

Ding,Ding,Ding. Play like you EXPECT to win!
Basabe and Cartwright have been playing strong and confident but last night they were timid as well.

He looks way to nervous out there I'm not sure what happened to his confidence, but it seems to be lacking. If he is still hurting he shouldn't be playing. If he is just unsure of himself he shouldn't be he has talent. He just needs to make ball handling his focus over the summer so he can create off the dribble.

He does need to refine his skillset, but he is shooting the ball fine when he gets an open look. Ball-handling has always been his weakness and he needs to tighten up his handle.
I disagree that he is not a Big Ten player. I see him as a Chris Kramer type who is not ever destined to be a big scorer, but a good defender who can shoot some threes.

If you look around the Big Ten right now, there are guys on other teams, good ones, who May is better than...like Keibler of MSU,or Thornton of MSU,or half of IUs roster, or Jarmouzzz of Wisky.

If Iowa could put together a deep roster,I see May as sharing the 3 spot with Matt Gatens next year. They would be a nice complement to each other's games..

Anyone else notice how Marble, McCabe, Cartwright are able to seem less hesitant and fluid in the offense than May, Gatens, and Cole can look sometimes.

I'm not saying lickliter made them worst players but I mean he preached slow ball, clock milking, pass away even when open concepts into the players. It seems to be shaking out of Matt and Cole by now but you can still see it in May.

we need full turnover aside from a few pieces...May and Gatens should not be our go to players if we want to compete in the Big Ten.
