Just hate this thread. Ghost of BTT acts like he knows more basketball than Fran does. At some point dude, this STFU.

Michigan has Final Four talent. We do not. That was the difference

Exactly! fans have to remember it is a long season and the Hawks are done playing Coppin State, if they can win 10 conference games they will go dancing.
 
As I stated in another thread, we all griped when TL/KF sat on their hands.

His message was, in his opinion, we were dogging it on defense and getting back on defense.

No issues here.
 
Fran is trying to teach his team how hard they need to compete to be successful in this league. He has upgraded the talent level but this team needs to get a lot tougher if they are going to have a winning record in the conference. If the Hawks don't improve their intensity especially on defense it is going to be a long season. Give them hell Fran they can handle it!

Just watched the game again...benching was worthy....but it almost seemed like a white flag wave by fran. I hope a couple starters lose their starting job( temporary) with how they gave up. Fran is trying to build something...including a mind set to never give up...as we did.
 
I thought it was a fantastic move and the right one. It wasn't just "sending a message" in my opinion. It was a "come join me on the sideline and see how difficult this is to watch" kind of thing. It is team building and a lesser coach would have kept the starters in and had them not learn much from it besides being torn apart.

A loss by one or 30 is one loss. Sometimes you just got to take your lumps and live for another day. Today wasn't the Hawkeyes day... it was Michigans. I am just glad Coach kept his cool at the game... it had to be very difficult.
 
As far as not getting the starting spot back? Nobody on the bench played their way into the starting line-up! So, I don't expect any changes to the starting 5. I think Coach Fran has the right guys in. Like I said... it was just a bad, bad day. There will be good ones, just not today.
 
Show me a team that needs extra motivation by throwing chairs or benching and I'm seeing a team that will never win championships unless they are flat out better than the competition. Show me a team that is self-motivated and I'm show you a team that will rise to the occasion and beat teams that are flat out more talented.

Maybe the type of players recruited?

How many of you do better at work by a raving boss long term?
 
You can't coach energy, there's a mentality you need to have every time you step on the court.

Why is it that everything Fran does is beyond reproach? You know, it is possible to have a very good coach who sometimes makes coaching mistakes. I think what Fran did was obviously a mistake. There was no message to what he did, he got mad and over-reacted. Did any of the starters look more focused or play better after they came back in the game? No. Do you think any of them will be on the bench to start against MSU. No.

Fran is not beyond reproach but I have no problem with what he did yesterday. You are looking at the game in a different way than the coaches do, you and I can watch the game on TV and see there was a big difference in talent. But we do not know the full game plan, nor what was instructed at half time. If you have players not doing what they are told, following your instruction, or not putting forth the effort then it was the right move to yank them and have them ride the bench. The message is if you are not going to do what you are told to do or want to play the game with the effort needed then I am going to put someone in that will. When you have a team starting 3 freshman it is not the wrong message to send as a unit. Hopefully the 2 "upper classmen" (White and Marble) can demonstrate the leadership by example and helping the rest of the team understand the message that the coaches were trying to send.

This is a common move made by coaches, it is better he uses this tactic in a game where you have no shot at winning than a close game. Most of us wanted a more emotional coach and chastised Lickliter for not making similar moves, but then again he never had a bench to do this with anyway. Fran is in no danger of losing his team, he can get a way with these "tough love" kind of moves since he already has the respect of his players.
