What past Iowa player would MOST help this years team?

No offense, but some of you need to realize that Iowa basketball played some damned good ball prior to 1982. Here's the top ten:

1. Ronnie Lester
2. Sam Williams
3. JJ Johnson
4. Freddy Brown
5. BJ Armstrong
6. Andre Woolridge
7. Ed Horton
8. Greg Stokes
9. Roy Marble
10. Acie Earl

They need a rebounder, and there was none better than Evans IMO.

This question is rigged. You could ask this every year, regardless of circumstance, and the answer would always be the same: Ronnie Lester. The best player in the history of Iowa basketball.

I wouldn't go that far. But he definitely is in the top four with Freddie Brown, John Johnson & Sam Williams. Williams is the last Hawk to win the Siver Basketball, forty-four year ago.

Kevin Kunnert, Iowa's career double-double leader, also would be very helpful to this team.

no no no none on your list would help, united state marines corp would beat you with their rifle and boots and drag you thru mud until u learn to stay by your man and send u into battle.

give me any one of these big men:

Either of the twin towers
Acie Earl
Chris Street
Reggie Evans
Jared Reiner
Ryan Bowen

The lack of a good-experienced big man clogging the middle has really hurt Iowa.

I don't have an answer but I was looking at Iowa players in the NBA and saw that we had three first round draft picks in the early 70's and I only had heard of Freddy Brown. Never knew this.

Yep. Sam Williams and JJ Johnson were the others. Iowa basketball used to be really, really good. Just so you know. Chad Calabria and Stick Vidnovic were also on that "Six Pack" team. Both phenomenal players but not necessarily NBA material. Kevin Kunnert came in at the tail end of the Six Pack....he was an All-American too. God, just thinking about Iowa basketball from 1945 to 2000 makes me feel ill. How do we not have a National Championship!?!?!

Using this as a source Iowa Hawkeyes in the NBA Draft - StatSheet.com
and I have no idea how reputable it is it says it 's actually Kevin Kunnert as opposed to Sam Williams.

Interesting note about Kunnert is that Kermit Washington claims that he started the fight in which Washington's punch almost killed Rudy Tomjanovich.

And yes, I know they used to be really good, that pretty much stopped when I was born :(
(I mean, I got to watch Davis' teams but never anyone too elite)

On a side note, I love NBA history but I have never actually looked into Iowa basketball history much. I should do that more.

My bad. Super Sam was the 35th overall pick in 1968. He might have been the most individually dominant player ever at Iowa. But, as a 6'3" forward, he was too much Eddie Horton and not enough Reggie Evans, if you catch my drift.

I like old time guys..... I was about 8 when BJ was playing so it's kind of hard to say I really "saw" him play.

Who is the best player you have seen play for Iowa?

Who is the best guard you have seen play for Iowa?
I am now severely depressed if BJ is considered to be an old time guy.

Best players I've seen (I'm 25 so if you come up with someone better remind me) were probably Ricky Davis and Reggie Evans (and I guess I'm basing most of this off of NBA success).

No fair. Base it off of what you saw when they were Hawks. Adam Haluska > Ricky Davis any day of the week.

Kevin Kunnert was the 12th pick of the '73 NBA draft. Williams actually was drafted in '68. Brown & Johnson were stars on the '79 Seattle NBA championship team.

That was a different era when Freddie Brown's 30-foot shots from downtown at Iowa & in the NBA were worth no more than two points. He didn't get the nickname just because it rhymed with his name.

Brown, Johnson, Kunnert & Williams were all Ralph Miller recruits

Greg Stokes
Acie Earl
Chris Street
Kent Hill
Ed Horton
Reggie Evans
Greg Bruner

Basically anybody that can provide some sort of inside defense and rebounding.

Somebody look up Connie Hawkins. I know he didn't play in a game for Iowa, but he spent a year on campus on the freshmen team.

This year's team with Connie Hawkins makes the NCAA tournament. This year's team with Reggie Evans, well, is basically this year's team with a couple more wins.

we need a center, so i would go with Earle, shot blocker and all around inside game, and he wouldn't back away from a Zeller, i still remember making Keady go ape after that finger wagging after a block; sorta like saying not in my house type of motion
