What is our WR situation?

He's being facetious.

I remember the analysts saying Lovie went really young two years ago and last year hence a lot of the transfer from his older guys. It has worked for Illinois as they are getting better.
Illinois has had a lot go there way with defensive TO and defensive scores. These types of years are one-offs.

So they’ll probably go back to the mean next season on TOs and defensive scoring and have to “earn it” = find a different way of winning.

Until that happens, Lovie hasn’t turned the corner in my opinion.

Why is it that everyone expects so much from Oliver Martin? He has 16 catches in 11 career games and wasn't good enough to play at Michigan. Why do so many people think he was going to come in here and be a superstar? I've never understood that. I approached his transfer as, he's not going to hurt us, I hope he helps, and maybe we've really got something, but I'm not holding my breath. As Gary Dolphin said about Illinois and all of their transfers, "there's a reason they transferred".

I agree. People assume that transfers are a sure upgrade but they are not. If a player is transferring, people need to look at it as a red flag. Player might not be as good as initially thought. I think Isaiah Moss may be different and against the norm in this regard. But most, are just going to be serviceable players. Yes, you may get a player that leaves for other reasons and contributes like a luke Recker, but again, most are going to be average players like a Maishe Dailey.

I see Bakari Evelyn kind of like a Dailey situation. A decent roll player. If people think they are getting a 4* player transferring, they are wrong. The guy jumped around from Nebraska and Valpo. He's not going to come in a take over games. He'll hopefully be a nice role player. People need to keep it real.

Actually in the Martin case, this actually makes me feel a bit better about Iowa and that the WR position is pretty healthy. I think this is a good sign that he hasn't just taken over a position. This shows the health of the position.

We do not have good enough receivers though they are better. IL and MN out recruited us at the receivers. None of the te s as targets seem to have the mojo others in the past did. Several times they haven't gone after catchable balls as if the thought the target was elsewhere.

I wonder how those highly regarded young IL and MN receivers could catch the missiles thrown by Stanley? I left watching Illinois game thinking, wow, I'm not sure our Iowa receivers are getting the respect they deserve in this regard. We have few dropped balls that hit their hands with how fast Stanley is firing them in there and in some of the tight windows. Pretty remarkable really. Kudos to the receivers.

All I know is this....we better get the QB thing right next year. We'll have as much or more skill position talent as we've had since probably 2002 (Russell, Lewis, Hinkle, Jones, Mo Brown, Clark) or 2009 (DJK, McNutt, Robinson, Wegher, Hampton, Moeaki).

I'm very comfortable with Petris and think he'll do just fine. Mansell to if he is put in there. He brings a little different style. He may transfer, though, if he feels Petris has the job locked.

His Bears teams operated in the same way. When they stayed healthy and forced turnovers they had some good seasons. But he had just as many sub .500 seasons as he did playoff appearances there.

He has always seemed borderline clueless to me. But, hey, he beat Wisconsin being a 31 point dog or so.

Who gives a F about Oliver Martin?

Our starting 3 + La Porta are killing it right now. This ain't rec league where everyone gets minutes. He wanted to come back home, Iowa gave him a shot, and he got beat. Them's the breaks...if he wanted to be a Hawkeye he should have come here right away where he could've worked his way in. He chose Michigan for his own personal reasons and college ball didn't go his way. Happens to hundreds of kids every year. What do people not understand?

LaPorta does not look like a freshman physically.

I think you're spot on with the fact that our current guys are performing well. And the Oliver Martin talk does seem to be annoyingly aimed at "playing time" - who can we sub out, so that Martin can sub in? ... this isn't the questions we should be asking.

But to nitpick, we aren't really "killing it". We have the 93rd ranked scoring offense in the country (23.5 pts/game). I think it's fair to discuss/think about how we can get more play-makers on the field and try to kickstart our offense. If we could look at some kind of advanced analystics or +/- style rating (NBA style), would our TEs not named Laporta be plus players? Are we really winning with a fullback on the field? I think these are the kinds of questions that fans are really getting at. No one is suggesting we take Tracy off the field in favor of Martin.

Stanley is near the top of the conference in pass attempts. That's who we are now. Why not get the best receivers on the field ?

Nah, my tongue was firmly planted in my cheek. Thot I’d beat the Haterz to it.

Anyone know why Minnesota and Illinois are getting so much future-love for playing so many freshman/sophomores and Iowa doesn’t?

I apologize. I should know better.

I do love our WRs and I think O. Martin in time will be great.

Can you imagine this team with a truly mobile QB. Unstoppable.

And we’ll need it. That schedule is tough.

Yeah I said they are getting better but you are right. the hawks had 3 years with Desmond King and Josh Jackson intercepting balls all over the place. I dont think the hawks are picking them off in 2018 and this year at quite that rate and it hurts especially when your offense needs as many short fields as they can get.

The hawk offense hasnt been that bad between the 20s but wow they have redzone issues most likely from the poor running game.

It's not what FANS expect, it's what Head Coach KF said late in the summer, something along the line: "We believe he can help us right away" if his waiver was approved.

They don't look like the same wr's as last year. Must have found ourselves a we coach!!
Our backs look better too. "Getting yards that aren't blocked for". Looks like we found us a rb coach.
The defense side is just good. From sliding in New backers to db's and maintaining a fairly stout line. We definitely found coaches on that side of the ball.
We have a lot going for us. Just need to get a little better in a few areas and we would be going to Indy this year.

Other teams seem to know our plays the minute we line up and Martin can't learn it in six months? The playbook cannot be that complicated.
