What are we looking at for next year?

Was thinking fran might try out jok at point guard a bit like he did with marble his senior year. Jok would need better ball handling skills but he showed flashes of taking the ball to the hole

If jok continues to run the baseline looking for shots teams will shut iowa down

Meanwhile , let the man relax til the next season starts.

We're better next year and here is why...

WOODY VS. REPLACEMENT
GESSEL VS REPLACEMENT
SAPP VS REPLACEMENT
UTHOFF VS REPLACEMENT

UTHOFF will be the hardest to replace, but really?

I truly believe this is a case of addition by subtraction.

Losing those guys is a bigger deal than people think. I think the toughest loss will be Woodbury both defensively and rebounding. Losing your starting point guard is never easy either.

Late in the year Woody was the only guy on the team trying for rebounds. If we get 3 guys crashing the boards like Baer did the other night, we will be better off as a team as far as rebounding goes. Woody's defense also fell apart late. He kept getting out of position. And if he's even one step out of position, it's a dunk guaranteed. Overall he was a really good defender and he will definitely be missed. But games like the Villanova one, he didn't stand much of a chance.

I watched a lot of basketball this weekend. I will say the one thing that the really successful teams all seem to have are guys who can get to the basket and create their own shot. We really missed that down the stretch. Jok would do it sometimes, Uthoff seemed to do it less and less, Mike tried but well, no need to go there, and Baer had some success against Villinova. That's my question for next year. Who is going to be the guy late in the shot clock that can drive and create his own shot or shots for others?

Getting 3 guys to crash the boards will go along ways. But to say our team will improve simply because the replacements for Gesell, Woodbury, and Sapp will be better is false, at least for the immediate future. Woodbury is going to be a tough one to replace.

Usually out of wide-open offenses with no one clogging up the lane. I'd like to see Iowa move to this style, rather than running shooters through baseline screens. Toward the end of the season, Jok was getting mugged along the baseline, and fouls were rarely called. Meanwhile, under the spread-out offenses, good penetration leads to ticky-tack handcheck fouls and wide open 3 point shooters.

I think watching Villinova play illustrates this point very well.

We're gonna struggle the first half of the season next year but by the time Fran figures out lineups and rotations, what works and doesn't work, etc. We're gonna surprise some folks in the second half.

We might even actually win a game in the Big 10 tournament.

The bench might be a lot better next year.

I would rather peak in February and March than say January ;)
