What about Fran's coaching?

There were some, but it isn't the expectations that have people ticked, it is trickling leads and games down their leg.

Iowa still has a chance to finish well, win all games at home and get a couple of the road and they still position themselves to have a shot at dancin'.

i know you don't mean it this way, but the question i'd ask is would people be happier if we got regularly beat by 10?

that's a stretch.

No its not. People who are overly negative don't have unrealistically high expectations before the seasons start. They see the glass half empty and pick us to lose all pick em games. People who had the high expectations to begin with are generally positive people who see the progress this team made.

tm made that comment the other day that he actually would feel less upset if they were losing by more. Honestly, that thinking to me, is ignorant. With TL, I would put a number for the deficit to become before I would quit watching beacuse you knew it was going to be bad. How is that better?

I am much more happy seeing Iowa with chances to win games they aren't supposed to be close in and on top of it, with the youth that gives me far more hope that Iowa is going to really take off soon and they still have a chance to do that this year.

It isn't a question of it happening, it is just a matter of when and this team is teasing the fans day by day and every game that expectation of finally winning that close one is lost people loose their minds.

i really do think this team will be considerably better next year. we just need to learn how to close. this could be, in a football analogy, our '08 and next year the breakout year. seems like most of the disappointment is in that many thought this would be the year. it could have been if we had a reliable shooter.

i personally would rather lose close. makes for more entertaining games. and that's what i'm in for. losing doesn't ruin my day. i watch sports for the drama of it. sure it isn't fun to lose, but i'm actually enjoying watching this team. which is something i didn't do for a couple of those dark years.

yeah, fran's a lousy coach who loses close games

so lousy he has a bunch of 2-3 star borderline big ten recruits (with two freshman exceptions) playing over their heads to be in these games to begin with

as has been said, the team needs a closer

gesell or woody might mature into that guy no one else on the current roster will

Solid post until you got to the comment about Woodbury potentially maturing into "that guy". Cmon. You have got to be kidding me. My opinion is he is an average at best big guy in the BIG.

McCaffrey needs to recognize you cannot win in the big ten loading up on project players. He makes some odd moves at times, but I suppose all coaches do. What is puzzling is why he seems unable to seal the deal with better recruits. Niang and Gibson picked ISU over Iowa. Iowa had no interest in Washpun, but offered Ingram, who doesn't play and looks extremely raw. Washpun can break guys down, defend and handle the ball in half court and transition. All I know is Jok, Uthoff and Meyer better have more game than Olaseni and Ingram or we are going to be looking up at a lot of teams.

no kidding you

can see woody going all brad miller

junior year

the horizon is fuzzy

niether utoff or jok is going to be the one to stick the knife in during the final minute

team will need better execution next year to close out teams

should come with another year of maturity

I would much rather have Clemmons then Washpun. Not sure why you compared Ingram to him tho. Also how can anyone complain about Fran's recruiting after Lick?

I love Fran as a coach for the most part. A few things I don't like or understand are...

- Why does he take a player out after he just made a great play and helped spur back the team... don't you want to reward him with more minutes... not only do you take out a player that is doing well but it could cost you some momentum. I don't understand this.

- I've noticed Fran doesn't like to take timeouts but when you see the other team going on a run or see your team losing it... take a time out bro! This seems to happen all the time. I don't think he uses his timeouts to his advantage sometimes or he waits too long.

- Woodbury... Now granted he has gotten into fowl trouble and isn't the greatest offensive threat and he is young.... but I personally thought he was doing well at Wisconsin a couple days ago and after the first half he didn't see much playing time at all. Iowa had a pretty small lineup relying on McCabe and White to cover the bigger dudes inside. As you saw Wisconsin was getting more offensive put backs and I think that is what got them back into the game also getting the crowd back into it. I personally wish Woodbury was used more.

Other than those three things I don't have anything to complain about. Love the style basketball he coaches. Next year should be a good year for the Hawks. I'm thinking 20+ wins easy.

We need juco Harrison Barnes types!! It's that easy Fran, bring em in!

Alos Washpun?? LOL the guy who averaged 0.9 ppg on a bad Tennessee team and didn't even play in half of their games? Yeah he's the answer. LOLerz

My reason for starting this thread is: I don't think it's very hard to understand why Iowa is losing so many close games. Fran is consistantly putting the team in the position to lose. Is it Fran's way of making the team more talented by putting them in more of these types of '50/50' win situations to give them experience, who knows? Maybe that's the whole thing.

Also, recruiting is but a micro portion of coaching. That's the difference between Fran and that guy who coaches Butler. The Butler coach gets more with less or, at least, gets the potential out of his players. That's a sign of a good coach. Hopefully he recruits better than Iowa's Butler coach did...

I'm beginning to wonder if Fran is becoming a Ferentz. You know, making the athlete fit the program rather than trying to fit the program to the athlete.

ted, we've been over this plenty of times, why do you keep bringing it up? Washpun is better than no one on our roster, I'm glad we had no interest in him. Recruiting is not like picking fruit from a tree. The players have to be willing to come here. This is the least appropriate time in the last few years to complain about recruiting.
