What's the latest on the Hawks pursuit of 2012 Guard Wesley Staten?

Staten is a top 150 prospect for the 2012 recruiting class, but I haven't heard nearly the amount of buzz about him compared to Woodbury.

Staten is a 6'0 guard out of Sioux City and most scouting pubs have him rated in the same general area as Woodbury (between a top 100 and 150 prospect in the 2012 class).

Is Iowa actively after the Staten kid and does he have any interest in becoming a Hawk?

I dont think he has an offer from Iowa and there has been some talk that Adam Woodbury does NOT want to be his teammate in college.

He was originally an ISU commit a few years back, but then backed off. Kid has a reputation of being a headcase.

Staten is the second best high school freshman player I've ever seen. The best? Gary Thompson! I watched him in every game for four years in the state tournament in Iowa City. Kinda makes me out to be an old fella doesn't it? Guilty I guess. He and Woodbury from competing schools in different class in Sioux City so some competiveness is understandable but first I've heard of it. Also first I've heard of Staten being a "head case". Got to wonder about the source for that??

I dont know if he has any interest in Iowa. But i will tell you this as far as being a head case he was in a no win situation at Sioux City West. Everything Ive heard since he transferred to Heelan has been good. As far as school being a team player etc. If he and his family would not have made the switch it would have runined him.

there are a lot of rumors about Staten, i'll leave it at that. just ask someone familiar with the sioux city teams and they should be able to give you some info. trust me, he comes with some baggage, but nothing that should scare teams away. he seems to have grown up some since his earlier issues.

Exactly that^^^ except he still acts like a kid straight outta the hood, check his facebook, very cocky and comes off as not very wise and pretty foolish. Not saying most kids aren't immature but its a little too much. To make light of some other shady things...Wesley turns 21 in november but is only going to be a senior next year. Very skeptical of the whole situation. I didn't think you could even play HS sports at 21? Whatever, the kid is going to be 22 at mid-term his first semester of college, I don't think a kid that can legally be drunk at night after basketball games his senior year should be anywhere near the 16-19 year old kids. JMHO. Discuss.

he is not going to be 21. he has been playing 17u aau ball according to recruiting sites. and I am pretty sure you can't play hs sports past age 19.

He will NOT be a Hawkeye. Kirk Speraw called an AAU coach that is a friend of The Shadow and asked if Wes Staten was good enough. The coach responded "At basketball or shopliflting?"

End of story.

I have not heard good things about Staten as a teammate. He will get a chance at high major ball but I bet it's outside of the state.

Well his birthday is November 27, 1990. I feel like either his parent(s) and/or the school are just not telling people things. Him and his teammates on Facebook also talked about him stealing things from Caseys gas station in sioux city around the time of their substate game, and basically he brushed it off as he did it all the time and it wasn't a big deal.

Not saying this one is true as i have no source but my brother has played summer ball and in season ball against him the past two years and a lot of people are saying he failed a class at semester and shouldn't have been allowed to participate for a while during the season but did anyways. Im guessing that is most likely a rumor though. Just some shady stuff going on. I feel like if a kid needs to switch schools ten minutes away to "get his life back together" it doesn't speak very highly of himself or his current school.

To the people saying he needed to give himself a better chance of getting recognized by switching schools, they don't know what they are talking about. He was offered his freshman year to go to ISU and you know by the time he would have been a senior he would have had many many other offers. Its almost all about how you do in AAU ball anyways these days. The kid is a tremendous overall player tho, insanely explosive and athletic, great on defense, has made drastic improvements on his pull up jumper and mid range game, and can take it to the hole and dunk just about anything. Makes a little more sense now knowing he is 20 after watching him this whole last year and being dumbfounded as to how he was so athletically mature and ahead of everyone game in and game out. Cheers.
