We’re Gonna Get Killed By Nebraska Next Week

Come on dude.

While I agree it wasn't a win to get too high over, that wasn't even the worst team in the West, let alone the P5.

Illinois was a top 5 rushing team nationally. They're not good. They're mediocre.

What happened today was a really good team exorcising its frustrations against an overmatched but by no means impotent opponent.

I bet Nebraska doesn't feel as cocky about Friday right now as it did around 3 this afternoon.

Their biggest rival? Little ol' Iowa?
I just can't see them matching up with us in the trenches. You can't fix that on the fly.

Yes, their QB will make some plays. Yes, they have some solid veteran receivers and good running backs. But our scheme even matches up well with them. If we keep them in front of us and force them to string first downs together to score points, history dictates that they will eventually make the costly penalty or mistake.

They just went up against the most physical defense in the conference. Now they have a short week, and travel to boot, to recover. They're going to deal with another physical defense on Friday. And they're going to try every trick in the book, including spouting off in the media, to try and drag us to their level of dreck.

Know what I'm sick of? People spinning faux motivation that every damn opponent we play in a given week has more to play for than us. All I've been hearing. Wisconsin is going to come in here mad. We don't play well coming off byes. Maryland has an explosive offense. Fitz hates us. Illinois is waiting for us. We're Nebraska's bowl game. We're this. We're that. Well, we're here, Nebraska. Time to put up or shut up.

All we have to do is not (proverbially) jump offside on fourth and four. They're 4-7 for a reason. Let's remember that. And by the way, opponents get up for other teams as well.

That's an insightful take.

Nebraska this season is like the college football equivalent of Russia; they don't want to rise to your level, they want to drag you down to theirs.

The reason everyone here is kind of pissed off even after we handed Illanoy its worst defeat since ever is because it's obvious that if Iowa plays well, nobody in the B1G can beat us. Sure, Alabama would curb stomp us like they do everyone else, but Iowa is so drenched with talent that the Hawks are superior to any B1G team if they execute at a high level. That's not usually the case. It is this year.

What could have been...

I brought that up in the game thread.

Every convincing win just makes the excruciating losses that much more perplexing. For some it just pisses them off even more.

On paper we should have rolled the west. On the field we might as well been rolling paper. So this is where we are, what could have been. One of those years where we didn't come close to maximizing our talent. That's why some people are nervous about Nebraska in addition to the obvious, that being the venom their fans will spew. Win that game and it feels like a somewhat vindicated year. Lose it and we might as well turn down our bowl invitation. It's 2010 or 2014 all over again.

Of course some have already checked out for the year, done in by the three game skid

Simple.WIN game Our very tough players can do it.Ptc d-line Best game. A.J. snaps snaps and more snaps. 40 plays whole game.Aj and Ghloston.Rotate tackle as necessary. And any tired player. Our 3Best+++D-line can set tone.

^^ This

Seeing what this team can do only serves as a reminder. Take away a couple of bone-headed plays here and there and this team easily could be undefeated right now. That's hard to accept as a fan.

Such is life.

Glad for our guys to get out and perform well for a day.

Nebraska's another game, we'll see.

Demolish last two opponents and make the best you can. What could have been will be talked about for this team for the rest of those young men's lives, to their friends family, etc.

Good golly this thread.

Nebraska runs the same junk we just put in the dumpster against Illinois. Nebby has zero defense and an offense that is only dangerous enough right now to hurt a defense if it losses contain. They aren't even as good as Purdue. I suppose there is always the Ferentz factor and we could come out flatter than Paris Hilton, but if we have any juice even just 1 ounce we should win comfortably.

Have to throw that game out due to the weather, I'm afraid. I hope I am wrong, I just really, really hate to lose to Nebraska.

It's funny, I don't really remember losing to Nebraska. How long has it been? Save for 4 first half turnovers, and two second half punt returns, I think it would be over 6 years.

I will tell you this. Iowa is CJ Beathard away from being undefeated and playing for a shot at the playoff. Now, what would happen against Alabama, Clemson, or Notre Dame...that's a different discussion. I honestly would like our chances against Clemson...I think they are overrated. NW hung with ND. My true point is that if we had a QB that made plays in crunch time, when it mattered most, we would be undefeated. Period. I'm not just talking about the end of the game. I'm talking about making the throws, decisions necessary to move the chains, or make a big play. Stanley has been terribly inconsistent...and has not engineered a touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter in any game. He's been 2015 Jake Rudock.

Great point. Put CJ on this team and wow. He would actually have time to throw the ball, which is something he never had in his two years starting at Iowa. I think he would have killed it on this team.

Yes you're right as rain on that I have just come to not take anything for granted. That NW loss took it out of me.

Illinois was missing their best player and arguably the best running back in the league Corbin. He had one carry for minus 4 yards. He got injured last week. He previously averaged about 8-9 yards a carry this season. I am sure that hurt Illinois tremendously who obviously need all the help they can get. Not sure how much we can take away from this game. It was good to see Fant and Epenesa make significant contributions!

Officiating will matter.... Huskers 2ndary does more grabbing/holding than anyone - only way they keep more big plays from happening. Defense will do the job. See Maryland / NW / Illini / Indy - all who rack up yds & pts v. others but not the Hawks! 96-24 the last 2 yrs - do it again
