Was It Just Me? Anybody Else Notice?

During the Robert Morris game, did anybody else notice just how athletic the team looked compared to all the previous years? The entire team athleticism was noticeable to me. Active bodies playing D and not having to switch a ton, staying with players beyond the 3 pt line, dunking, etc. It was refreshing to say the least.

The ball movement alone was ten times more than what it was with Fran. They were flying around. The faster pace just looked more like a B1G team. Fran's squads always seemd like they were trying to force a square peg in a round hole and when we had standout players like Weezy, Garza, Jok, Uthoff, Murrays etc. it could work. But once NIL hit the scene and Fran didn't have stars like that it finally succumbed.

The other thing that stood out to me was the mismatches created by all that movement. A lot of those dunks were from movement that left a guard on a post player.

Definitely. It is kind of hard to fathom for me, how a bunch of Drake transfers, a Robert Morris transfer, seem so much more athletic than a big 10 Iowa team from the previous year/s

Exactly!

The spacing on offense and ball movement was superb. The defense was scrambling. The ball would get passed around 4-5 times without the ball hitting the floor then someone would cut to the hoop with a clean alley.

Fran clearly tried to bring in a bunch of long wing shooters. They could shoot but they were a liability on defense, and they also had problems getting an open or clean shot sec to not being as athletic compared to those guarding them.

Kind of pizzes ya off when thinking about it.

Remember all the dribbling by the guards at the top of the arc we would see in the past. Dribbling without a purpose.

I always argued around here that Fran's strength and conditioning was not as good as it could/should have been. I think we are quickly seeing the difference. I thought we would see this more than it being hard to fathom.

I've said this on like 5 different posts. How did we get 8 Drake guys and somehow become way more athletic? I don't remember an Iowa team dunking the ball as much as I saw the other night. Maybe they were just fired up.

They spaced the floor and made cuts to the hoop. Fran's teams I feel played more outside in and relied on shooting % more from the outside.

Yea, your point about getting the Drakes guys and looking like that is valid and baffling. It makes one realize just how under athletic Fran's teams have been. Just so noticeable.

I'm not sure I would be making any declarative statements regarding the athleticism of the team. Let's see how they fare against some of the heavy hitters we will see on the schedule. For one game, against an overpowered Robert Morris team, we looked pretty good and luckily, our immediate schedule will allow us to work through some of our issues before the real poop hits the fan. I'm just wondering how this "Drake" team will be able to compete in the B1G, where they will encounter bigger and quicker athletes.

right, but Fran's teams didn't look very athletic against the Robert Morris's of the world either. We're all trying to think of a PG that could dunk.

I thought McCaffery's teams could easily play with these guys on offense. They were athletic enough to finish second in the country (to Gonzaga) in assists, tenth in FG %, 36th in Fast Break Points, etc. Unfortunately, it is when you flip the page to Defensive stats that the problem becomes apparent. I've always believed that the majority of our players could play effective defense, they just weren't pressured to do so, even though we were told over and over that they were working on team defense.

I feel like the defense was scheme philosophy, coaching and effort. You should read how upset Creighton fans are RN about how South Dakota just attacked the shit out of the rim and destroyed Owen Freeman a couple nights ago. After having Kalkbrenner there for 5 years, it was eye opening, even against a school like South Dakota.

I get what you are saying for sure and I still have no idea how it will hold up against bigger and better teams. Again, just the sheer amount of dunks and how above the rim the entire team seemed to play was something a lot of Iowa fans haven't noticed in a while and that's whether they were playing Roast Beef State or Michigan.

To be fair Fran's teams were built on perimeter shooting and if they were athletic it was a huge plus but definitely not a priority. I loved the fact that I saw different player builds and styles out there the other night. I know it was beaten like a dead horse, but Frans guys all essentially fit the same mold with similar skills sets. Ben seems to have a multi-dimensional roster that's made up of more well rounded players/athletes. It was a change I was more then ready for.

Don't know how accurate this was as I watched the game while somewhat distracted, but in the postgame interview, Dolph mentioned to McCollum that there are three of his players (one was Banks, for sure) who all seemed to be the same size with the same skill set.

I wish we could have kept Dix, but I think losing Freeman was addition by subtraction.

Yeah, I thought that even if his pt total wasn't better than OF the other night, he showed way more value and rebounded well, played good D and played within the offense. I don't know why I am watching this shit tho lol

Yep

We will get a better feel next week against Xavier.

Under Fran, they were always a top 20, top 10 team in offensive efficiency. Doesn’t matter if it was Bart Torvik, KenPom or whoever is your favorite analytics person is…the numbers always supported Fran could coach up OFFENSE.
