Uthoff goes undrafted.....are you Serious?

Pretty hard to believe that more than 10 Europeans were taken in the two round NBA draft last night and Uthoff's name went by the boards. And to add more to the question, ISU's Niang and Nader both get picked? You got to be kidding....

It was a deep draft plus he's 23 already-ancient for NBA standards.

Who knows, maybe Fran gave him a less-then-glowing reference to scouts. Seem to remember hearing about Fran and JU screaming F-bombs at each other when we lost to Illinois in the B1G tournament.

It's pretty clear that most teams in the second round of the draft are looking for "draft and stash" players. Meaning with the salary cap they draft guys that they know will either play in the D league or over seas. Nader agreed last night to play in the D League this year. That is why they drafted him. It's a throw away pick. Uthoff is trying to make a NBA roster this year. Hopefully he picks the right team in FA.

I sure hope this is not the case

Probably mostly it was because he's 23 and it was a deep draft. I remember after the first round was over thinking there were still a lot of players better than JU that hadn't been drafted and maybe he wouldn't be so lucky. Then I went to bed.

Just heard his agent come out and say that he had a couple of teams that wanted to draft and stash him but he wouldn't agree to it. Exactly what I thought happened. He thinks he can play in the league this year. Good for him. Good luck JU

Fran would not do that to a kid. He has his faults, as we all do, but he's not going to submarine a player. I sat right behind the bench at the B1G Tournament. There was a lot of yelling but I don't recall a direct conflict between Fran and JU at any point.

JU and FM shouting matches had nothing to do with it. The NBA often takes questionable character and JU isn't questionable as a person in comparison. What does stand out on JU is that he won't get mismatches on D from zone. NBA has tall men who can defend. JU won't be open with lack of speed much. There are enough quick guys who can shoot.

What does stick out about Fran is Woody's lack of development. Big men that are reasonably developed can make the NBA rosters. You just don't see 7 footers in NBA anymore that can't jump at all. The NBA is going speed/quick over size. He brings little to the NBA table to out stretch someone.

That said, we had a good run with these guys.

Woody just doesn't have it in him to jump. If he had an average vertical for a man his size, he probably could have been a first round pick.

If you land in a good spot playing overseas ain't a bad gig. You can make a little bit of coin the hardest part is probably selling it to the wife or girlfriend.

It's too bad the NBADL isn't a more viable option. For a variety of reasons I just do not think you aren't going to get a really good developmental league.

Agents do say a lot of things that might be a stretch of the truth. That's one thing they get paid for. Hope he goes to the right situation, makes a team and proves all the NBA scouts, GM, and coaches wrong.

No, he is correct. That is what was reported. Jarrod wants a chance to make a roster now, Not play in Europe or the D league.

MY guess is he still rotates to the D league for some experience. Sit on the bench for an NBA roster and Eat for a month, then a month of D league, then back to the bench and eat, then back to the D league... Then repeat. He does need to add some weight! And of course some experience will help. Push him to be more aggressive.

Might be the dumbest thing I've read on here in a long time. Every coach wants his players to get drafted as that is a recruiting advantage, especially in the NBA where not as many get drafted. They promote their players as they still have their best interest to look out for.

This draft wasn't deep. It's widely considered to be a pretty bad draft.

Uthoff has a really unique skill set, but he's neither strong enough or explosive enough to succeed in the NBA, in my view. He's not fast enough to keep up with the 3s and not strong enough to play a 4.

He'll make good money playing in Europe, though.

Yup... Sorta a tweener in todays sense. The release on his shot isn't that quick either I've heard that nit picked about too. He's pretty much a shorter/smaller Dirk Nowitzki as far as his game goes but he's not as good at shooting (who is though Dirks awesome) I think there's a chance he could carve out a role in todays NBA but it's a small chance and to what extent I don't know. Probably not a large one. It's all about what team he gets to. I was hoping the Spurs or Warriors may have grabbed him. Maybe the Cavs will take him now as a FA... They can use a forward that can shoot if Frye doesn't come back in that type of role and I think Jefferson is retiring.
