USC NCAA Findings

Finally, the decision on the NCAA investigation into the USC football/basketball programs will be announced this Friday.

While I certainly hope USC gets nailed, I have my doubts whether they will get anything more than a slap on the wrist. Who cares if they take away a past championship- sports fans remember USC won the 2004 football title, and taking away an already awarded crystal trophy, or changing the official NCAA record book doesn't change anything in my opinion.

USC's defense to the Reggie Bush and OJ Mayo allegations can best be described by Sgt. Schultz from the old Hogan's Heroes TV show... "I know nothing - I see nothing."

If the NCAA does not come down hard on USC for lack of institutional control, they might as well throw out this lack of institutional control rule, as every other school will just go with the "know nothing, see nothing" defense when a star athlete receives cash or gifts from an outside source while enrolled in that university.

I think they will get hit for this. If the NCAA wanted to hold back they wouldn't be addressing the basketball and football problems at the same time. To me, that brings the lack of institutional control to the table. By hiring Kiffin, who was there when these allegations took place, it was just a slap in the face to the NCAA and I think they will send a message.

The NCAA isn't in the business of actually enforcing things to the fullest extent of their power anymore...not on one of their golden geese anyway...They don't want another Alabama on their hands.

Expect a slap on the wrist with the basketball team taking the fall like a UCONN assistant coach...

I hope ther is a meaningful sanction if violations are determined. But I am not gonna hold my breath over it.

I think that anyone hoping for USC to get nailed is going to be extremely disappointed by the ruling on Friday. I hope I eat my words, but I don't see USC getting nailed.

You will never again see the "death penalty"! SMU has never recovered fully from it and I just don't see the NCAA ever doing it again.

SMU didn't and doesn't have the same kind of resources that USC has, or the tradition. If USC goes a few years without bowls, TV, and also have reduced scholarships, people are still going to remember USC. And the media will still talk about them, especially if they're doing well. If they're undefeated, ESPN will debate "Would USC win the national championship if they were eligible for a bowl?" Mark my words, they won't disappear from the national scene.

And it's California for crying out loud. It's not hard to recruit kids to go there.

USC's demise is a necessary loss. Soon I will have a new southern California team, one far younger and more powerful.

Rise, UCLA...
