People don't hate the Pittsburgh Steelers or the New Orleans Saints, they hate the Cowboys. People don't hate the St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox, they hate the Yankees. People don't hate the San Antonio Spurs and the Boston Celtics, they hate the Lakers. Yet these are all championship caliber teams almost yearly. So while you are correct that I think jealousy comes into play somewhat, it is not the sole reason that people hate on teams.
If you pay attention to a team to watch them lose, it is the exact same as paying attention to watch them win! That is my point here. Sure, some people are hyped because of their respect from the media, Tim Tebow is an obvious example. But those examples, in my view, are less common than the media covering a train wreck stories.
Put it this way, we'll make a game out of it. What is more likely to get you face time on ESPN?
1. Getting caught with a hooker, or building a community center for underprivlidged kids?
2. Getting in a fight in a strip club, or visiting wounded soilders in the hospital?
3. Buying a luxury box to let kids with cancer sit in, or throwing your girlfriend out of a moving car?
4. Traveling to Africa to help refugees, or pulling a gun at a night club bouncer?
5. Donating $50,000 to the Haitian relief fund, or get caught impregnating a porn star?
