USA Today - Fri 9/17

I think the focus is on AZ because the game is out there and AZ's has had marginal, recent success. And this year, for the first time in a long time they have a chance to win the Pac 10. In other words there's a brewing story. Just because there's another angle to this game doesn't mean we're being disrespected. All the stories don't have to be all about us.

The media does not hype players out of respect. In fact, some of the most hyped people in sports, as well as our culture in general, are people who the public at-large generally disrespects.

Do you think Reggie Bush gets hype because of all of the respect for his story? Do you think Michael Vick gets so much hype for his character? Do you think Brett Farve, Paris Hilton, and Kate Goesslin are on magazines because of how much everyone loves them?

I would say that, for the most part, hype is a byproduct of disrespect. Why do USC, ND, and Florida get hyped? People hate them! Why do the Yankees, Lakers, and Cowboys get so much hype? People hate them!

As was said, the media doesn't hype up teams like the Yankees because people hate them. They hype them because they have what others don't. People hate them because they're hyped. People are jealous because their teams don't have that kind of success.

I personally would like it if the players on the team feel disrespected. That's a big key in coaching at the high level that Ferentz is: keep your team hungry. Make them feel disrespected by the outside world, so that they go out and play with a chip on their shoulder. Just because a team isn't actually the underdog doesn't mean the coach can't make them feel that they are.

Public perception matters because the national championship is the ultimate goal and in order to even get to that game you have to convince people that you are one of the two best teams in the country. There lies the problem.

This is my prediction

1) Iowa loses (even a close loss) and we plummet in the polls more than we should and people will say that we're pretenders which will make it very hard, probably impossible, to reach that NCG even if the other two teams playing also have one loss.

2) Iowa wins and its close. People will say that the #9 team in the country should have man handeled a team that was barely in the top 25 and had to replace almost their entire defence from last year. The perception will be that we are not as good as advertised and the best possible result is that we stay where we are in the polls. I think that a close win could drop us.

3) Iowa wins by at least two TDs. Only in this situation is there a net positive for Iowa and many will still say that this is simply what a top ten program should do.

Absolutely could not be more wrong. Those teams and programs are hyped because they win and are champions. Bottom line! People hate them because either you love them or hate them. If you don't have success you will hate it and others associated with it. Hype comes when you show you are a champion and can compete with anyone in the nation. People don't hype Michael Phelps because they hate him, they hype Michael Phelps because he is a champion. Same goes for anyone else who is a champion. You don't hear people in Iowa hyping Iowa State because they hate ISU. Take this garbage somewhere else!

People don't hate the Pittsburgh Steelers or the New Orleans Saints, they hate the Cowboys. People don't hate the St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox, they hate the Yankees. People don't hate the San Antonio Spurs and the Boston Celtics, they hate the Lakers. Yet these are all championship caliber teams almost yearly. So while you are correct that I think jealousy comes into play somewhat, it is not the sole reason that people hate on teams.

If you pay attention to a team to watch them lose, it is the exact same as paying attention to watch them win! That is my point here. Sure, some people are hyped because of their respect from the media, Tim Tebow is an obvious example. But those examples, in my view, are less common than the media covering a train wreck stories.

Put it this way, we'll make a game out of it. What is more likely to get you face time on ESPN?
1. Getting caught with a hooker, or building a community center for underprivlidged kids?
2. Getting in a fight in a strip club, or visiting wounded soilders in the hospital?
3. Buying a luxury box to let kids with cancer sit in, or throwing your girlfriend out of a moving car?
4. Traveling to Africa to help refugees, or pulling a gun at a night club bouncer?
5. Donating $50,000 to the Haitian relief fund, or get caught impregnating a porn star?

This post isn't for anyone in particular but I really don't understand why so many Iowa fans week after week and year after year talk about how Iowa doesn't get any respect. PLEASE MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!

Seriously who the hell cares if a so called "expert" picks us to lose a game. Does it really matter at all on what is actually going to happen on the field????

I hate to break it to people but Iowa is far from disrespected and just about anybody around college football knows how good of a coach KF is and that the Iowa program is as solid as they come. I just don't understand why fans make it a point to post a thread anytime there is a blogger or a writer that doesn't pick us to win a game by 3 touchdowns or put us on the front of their website, magazine, paper, etc.

Who the hell cares?????? I would hope as Iowa fans that people would realize just because you are a fan of the team doesn't mean that everybody else that isn't a fan has to have the same opinion. If they keep winning they will be on the TV shows, in the paper, magazines, and on the websites plenty. It just gets really old reading post after post of people crying about a guy in Anywhereville, USA not bowing down to the wonder that is Iowa Football.

Sorry, end rant. I feel much better.

Good points hoffa...people don't want "respect" for their team...they want everyone to like them as much as THEY do and cover them as such. How many times have we seen someone like Ken Miller called an "idiot" for picking against the Hawks because of a gut feeling he had about the Clones (must've been indigestion) and someone like Adam Rittenburg is called a "great writer" because he said something nice about how the secondary played versus directional-hyphen state. I've come around to the notion that people just like to complain and vent and their favorite sports teams become their outlet for it...which in the end, is fine by me because I'm right there in that fight with them...even if I'm not on the "no respect" wall with my sniper rifle...

You are right. We should be hyped if and when we win an outright BigTen title and/or national championship. Until then, everyone should just shut up.

Those teams like the Cowboys are hated BECAUSE they get hyped so much. We have to put up with them being shoved down our throats all the time, and people get sick of it.

People also have a tendency to hate champions who are flashy. That description fits the Lakers and Cowboys to a "T".

34-14 iowa

we get talked about enough. who cares what national talking heads have to say? when we win, we win. if we keep winning, it will be impossible for them to keep us down
