USA today Cites Frentz Contract One of the Worst

Aside from the fact that all of these college coaching contracts are outrageous, a quick scan of the vast improvements to the football complex including Kinnick and the rather stable relevance of Iowa football kind of belie his contract being "bad" in comparison to his peers.

I will never fault a coach for being overpaid. I put the entire blame on the AD/school paying for him. College sports are a business driven by the mighty dollar. While I may not think he or anyone else is worth the contract they are given, they're no different than any of us and I don't think any of us would turn down that contract.

Barta, not Kirk in my opinion is reason Kirk is over paid. Barta could have let his contract play out or could have structured it differently with a considerably lower buy out, or simply not extended the contract and found another face of the program when the current contract expired.

To those who say Kirk is paid too much, my reply has always been: Maybe.... but someone had to agree to pay him that.

No offense but I think you are missing the point.

Mediocrity has been handsomely rewarded because of shrewd manipulation by Kirk and his agent aimed at a half competent AD. This mindset lowers our expectations and apparently makes blatant nepotism acceptable. These things should never be acceptable.

And if you buy Kirk's explanation from a few years ago that he temporarily sucked at coaching because he was too busy fundraising then I have nothing more to say other than he and Barta have no sense of priority, no sense of accountability, and feel no pressure to succeed in those areas that matter.

But hey just sit back and enjoy our 7 win seasons and enjoy another generation of Ferentz football coming to a stadium near you.
I don't really understand the whole "manipulation" argument. Kirk and his agent were good negotiators, and if they outdid the UI in the negotiations, that's not a manipulation, that's just being better at it. Manipulation connotes he did some underhanded, unethical or even illegal, there's no evidence of that, unless you want to argue that Kirk's style of football put Barta and the rest of the gang at the UI into a trance such that Kirk was able to get whatever he wanted. If in 5 years or so Kirk snaps his fingers and Barta shakes his head and wonders where's he's been for the past 15 years, then I'll join the "manipulation" chorus.

I think there are a number of us who don't believe an agent/coach will out negotiate a U such as Iowa. If true, your 3rd line brings questions. You do have a coach out earning his boss.....

Agree 100%. Kirk's job is to coach. Kirk's agents job is to negotiate. And Barta likes to skip the negotiating phase and sign that dotted line.

I think the article is a little off base. Most of us are less concerned with wins and losses and more concerned about whether his players leave the program quality men and contribute to society in a positive way. I think he's been remarkable.

I'm not missing the point, you're missing the point that you're bitching about this is the equivalent of yelling at the sun every morning.

How do they define profit and what are they doing with it? Is that before or after paying coaches? I thought that all the recent remodeling of the stadium was being done with outside donations above and beyond that or does that get included in it? I'm just curious what happens with 41 million bucks that gets to be laying around. They've been raking it in for awhile now and I'm sure with the football facility having been built and all the new shiny things they've spent $ on they may have some loans to pay off but no matter what it can't take long to pay them off with this kind of rate of return year in and yr out...
Financial data are estimates based on annual financial filings made to the NCAA and Dept. of Education.
