Upon further review...not as bad as I thought (very, very long)

I went back and attempted to watch some of the game (was at the game in person and had it on DVR).

I agree with the OP that there were some tough breaks (the non-punt block that resulted in a penalty, etc).

I also agree there were some bad drops, or perhaps bad communication between VDB and receivers.

There is one thing that really does stick out in my mind and that is the apparent insistence to run power running plays when the other team is practically daring you to beat them over the top. As other posters have noted, there were frequently 8 (even 9) guys playing within a few yards of the LOS. We have to eventually make teams pay with the deep ball. In games like this (and some last year), it seems like the defense has 15 guys.

It has been like this for the last 10 years. There ALWAYS is 8 to 9 guys within 2-3 yards of the line of scrimmage, and we continue to try to run into it, usually with the delayed off tackle play. Frankly, it's sickening. It's a combination coach and qb issue. I would hope the qb has the option to change the play, but sometimes it seems like they are going to run the ball no matter what. As much as i like coach Ferentz, the offensive philosophy stinks and has for many years now. You have to play to your strengths; it may not be the same every year. One year you have a drew tate and vandenberg the next. The strengths and weaknesses are different for each player. I feel that we try to do the same thing no matter what. The only change i have seen in 10 years is that we run a few hurry up plays a game now. Frankly there is no point to this, just alot of frustration that has built up over years with our offensive philosophy and the consistent lack of production.

Where has Maurice Fleming been? He got a lot of snaps in the fall practices but to my knowledge he has not seen the field yet. Does anyone else not like our 5 wide formation of 2 wrs, 2 TEs and bullock? I wish we could put Fleming/ Hillyer in for Derby in that situation for sure.

I'm not going to read this. Anyone who could re-watch that game has serious issues..

Bottomline is this- Iowa scored 6 points against ISU at Kinnick.. Enough Said!!! Don't come and tell me it wasn't as bad as you thought. Sorry not buying that CRAP!!!

I guess I'm overly optimistic and can't see why alot of people are saying were in for a very rough season. From what I'm seeing we're not in a position where we have to instantly become this iowa juggernaut that many were saying we would need to bail our defense out. IMO all we have to do is become average offensively, based on what we've seen from the defense the first two games. I just don't see that it's that extreme of an idea to think that if can simply improve the slightest bit and get one to two redzone TD's a game we can be very successful based on the way our schedule plays out.

I think the problem is that everyone was so reliant on the offense carrying us this year, the majority want to jump ship. I think that's simply not the case anymore and see our defense being a strength and the offense simply improving enough to be average.

I have problem with this thought process, it is because Iowa has played NIU and ISU. Don't get me wrong Kudo's to the Defense so far, but no way this offense can be just average.

Before the season I thought this team could get six wins by just putting their helmets on correctly. After the first two games I changed my tune -- this is a challenged Iowa football team. Even during other seasons that started off sluggish -- we have not looked this bad. Scoring one touchdown against the likes of NI and ISU is a sign there is more wrong than just dropped balls.

I kept having flashbacks to Iowa's second year under Kirk. There is a noticeable talent gap -- at least with the players we have on the field. Only time will tell if the players waiting in the wings will help right this ship that has gone off course for the third year in a row.

Not ready to throw in the towel. After 32 years of being a die-hard Hawkeye, I, like many of you, have witnessed poor Iowa teams. But I don't think this is simply a problem of not executing. I truly feel the program is walking a fine line of simply becoming average. And that is hard to swallow when you look at our rabid fan base, our facilities, and the salaries we pay our coaches. I often ask: "How are teams with head coaches making $1.4 million beating us -- and beating us often?"

Michigan State is the new Iowa. We are the new Purdue. No, I am not calling for anybody's head ... It just leaves you wondering how we got here. We lost players, etc., but the bottomline is the program is where it's at right now because of Kirk. Good or bad. Kirk has done a tremendous job at during his tenure at Iowa. But when you look at the last two seasons, coupled with this year, you are left scratching your head a bit -- thinking "okay, where is this thing headed?" I will always try to keep my Hawkeye blinders on ... But I doubt many fans are feeling the same optimism that they feel for -- let's say -- the Iowa basketball program. We are digressing. And it is hard to look the other way.
