Unofficial World Cup/US Nats Victory Thread

Almost here, folks. I personally can't wait. This one could be special if we beat Ghana.

Cue the weird soccer trolling in 5, 4, 3....

Can't wait either, Wunder, starting following soccer when my children started playing in elementary school. Son was a defensive demon, didn't care about scoring, but loved to stop the other team from scoring. Only had one goal scored against him. Unfortunately he gave the sport up, but he dearly loves the game and watchs the European teams during the season, know all the players. We watch the World Cup together.

I however watched the USA Woman win their first World Cup and from that point on I liked watching the American girls playing. Love their toughness and excellence. The game against Brazil in the semifinals in OT was spectacular and featured the best soccer play I have ever seen with about one second to go.....

USA won in a shoot out, but lost to Japan in the championship game in a shoot out. Think they were exhausted from the Brazil game. Those Brazil women are vicious.....

I will be watching most games this year and every one of the USA mens games. Surprised to see that so many HN posters love the game. Used to be different....

Might be fun to go down to the Royal Mile, a English pub in downtown DM to watch the USA games. They are rather zealous there, and have an excellent selection on beer.....

Oh, Yeah, about watching the USA Women win their first cup. It was a abnormally hot Summer in DM and I have never had air conditioning, it gets too cold for me and sometimes is painful, so the TV room is upstairs. I inflated my Caravelle boat, got the garden hose upstairs through the patio doors, filled it with water, put on the overhead fan, filled a cooler with Dos Equis and watched the games in cool comfort.....

Well I saw a super super quick goal, went out to mow the yard and 80 minutes later I came in to see the US still up 1 - nil.

Then the Ghananananese struck with an amazing display of deft footwork to tie it.

I thought well that is the end it is either a tie or loss but wow the US went on the offensive and headed in that great corner kick.

I dont know if I could watch a complete soccer game but I was lucky to see some great action in limited time.

USA USA USA

Hate to break it to you guys but soccer still, sucks balls. People keep telling us to just wait for the soccer invasion and how it will change our lives and sports forever....and it keeps sucking.

I strongly disagree. If the U.S. men's team can manage to keep making a push during the World Cup then soccer's popularity will continue to grow as it has been. I think it's incredibly fun to watch when it is played the right way.

The "right way" is where I start to have issues. There are several aspects of soccer that simply drive me bonkers. The faking injury BS is just plain pathetic. Stalling tactics are so obvious it can become nauseatingly boring. By far the worst part of it all is the amount of power the officials have. The officiating draws all sorts of criticism because quite frankly it has been an abomination. Absolutely as bad as it gets in terms of officiating. Thank god Mexico still won their game, but that was the worst display of officiating I've ever seen. It is not easy to score a goal in soccer. Mexico should have had 3 or 4 goals in that game but the refs completely screwed them. That game is a perfect example, but it happens all the time. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that it's only a matter of time before the US team gets screwed by a couple bad calls.

Nothing, absolutely nothing, is more frustrating in athletics than when a game is decided by officiating. Multiply that times one million when you consider the fact these guys work their entire lives for a chance to play in the World Cup. It's incredibly hard to watch when that stuff happens. It's high time they initiate video replays into their officiating. It would solve a lot of these problems. Plus they need to make the officials more accountable. I think right now FIFA has a rule that says the officials are not required to answer any questions about the calls they make during the games. That's a bunch of hogwash.

You think the last Mexico game's officiating was bad I feel today's game will be much much worse. As bad as it was last game I don't see it possibly getting any better playing the host nation. The only major difference being I don't see them calling back countless goals claiming a player was off sides, that said I think we see much more phantom fouls in the midfield and Brazil's attacking third.

I think I would watch it more if.... The flopping and fake crying would stop. I played soccer from the time I could walk through college and it irritates the f out of me. Its like watching a MSU football game in the 4th quarter with their defense on the field, you know a fake injury is coming just not sure when.... The problem is we (Americans) are use to physical games ie. hockey, football etc so when they are rolling around on the ground like babies and we see replay and there was no actual contact it pisses me off. Just my take on why if they grew balls and played it would be different and the sport would have more followers.

Agreed. I too played through college and currently coach at the high school level. Not sure why so much diving has to occur. Given, I don't think people realize how much it hurts to actually be fouled, but the flopping is ridiculous and unneeded. I will always follow the game and be a huge fan but its a black eye for the sport.

That said, hell of a win yesterday. Wasn't happy with going all out defensive with an inexperienced back line, but great effort and more importantly got the result we needed to stay in the hunt.

Even though I hate soccer and think that anyone who likes it should be hung for treason, I really do try to not respond to these threads because if you like drinking tea, eating crumpets, and like watching de futball...that's your business.

What would happen if the Heat or the Spurs..or any other football, basketball or hockey team all swam naked together? The news would be bigger than the OJ chase. But with a soccer team it's just accepted.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with homosexuals. I really hate people who aren't tolerant of them. I just think that if you are that way you should find another man and be happy and not hide behind trying to be an "Athlete" by playing soccer.

Gender roles are different in every culture and even going to a not-so-exotic place like Croatia you would be surprised that its considered ok for a guy to kiss another man, it doesn't mean he is gay or effeminate or anything.

Couple thoughts here.....

1) I have never understood why someone gets in a thread about soccer to tell everyone it sucks?! I get you don't like soccer proselytizing in a thread about football or basketball or whatever. I even get you don't like people telling you are wrong. But what is bizarre is this desire to get in a "soccer" thread and tell everyone how you hate it. That is silly, petty and predictably "American". It reeks of someone who just doesn't "get" the sport and hates anyone who does....not saying thats true, but that's how it comes off.

2nd) Soccer has become a vicious, violent sport. There are more injuries in the USA every year via soccer than I think maybe all sport combined, including lots of concussions...I have 5 kids, 4 old enuff to play and they have all had injuries and for the most part they are quite tough. Jake has broke his collarbone and wrist. He has got kicked in the face and stomach so hard with the ball it left seams. Lexie got freight trained so badly her nose exploded.

3rd) I hate the flopping and the acting like they got killed, however see above. IT IS a violent sport and if you hate that you must also hate the flopping in B-ball, the fake injuries in football, the pi%# attitudes of baseball players and their one upmanship tactics at the plate and on the mound, etc. PS....an average soccer kick travels at 40-60 miles per hour, the elite have been known to reach 100 MPH plus.

4th) I too used to pooh-pooh soccer as boring, beneath me, only for third world countries etc...but after being forced to embrace and therefore understand its beauty and complexity. I now realize how exciting and incredible these athletes are.

I've also realized they don't play it because its cheap and for the poor?! These are the kinds of things, we Americans say, in fact I used to say it. They play it in England, Spain, Germany, France, Japan, Australia, Russia, Argentina i/e: every where and they love it more than anything...

And It isn't because its "the only" thing...lol!! See above, they play pretty high level Basketball, baseball and other sports in all those places as well...

5) The Truth is whether you like it or not, its a good thing for American kids, it has increased the athleticism of the suburban kids by giving them an outlet at a much younger age to stretch, run, grow and improve their speed and agility. Some of these kids go on to to excel in other sports and they have soccer in part to thank.

And finally its okay if you don't like it, it doesn't make you bad or evil or anything really. But it also doesn't make you enlightened either, like so many try to pretend to be, because they are "above" the game......it IS the Worlds sport and there isn't any debate. I was You, and now I'm not. I have watched parts of most every game so far and in fact found myself laughing out loud at what I've become. Last night I found myself watching pretty much the entire replay of Brazil/Mexico, a scoreless tie, that I already knew the outcome of, and found myself mesmerized.

Incidentally, the flopping isnt nearly as bad, nor does it get called near as much as it used to. In fact I dare say it isnt nearly as bad as what I saw in the NBA this year and I watched very, very few games. Its not my thing anymore.

I have to give credit to The Normans for their performance today. They really pulled it out, not since the Battle of Hastings had The Normans been so thoroughly drenched in the glory of victory. They can wave their flag proudly and return home as conquering champions after today.
