University of Maryland hopes to 'enhance the fan experience' by selling alcohol

THIS. Iowa does not need to sell booze at the games (although I bet GB is contemplating it for higher vending sales ONLY). Iowa, Barta, need to enhance the Gameday experience. Not crush it like they did 6+ years ago.

They ruined Iowa Tailgating. It has not been the same since. And sadly, probably never will be again.... Iowa WAS about the Gameday experience. A tradition since the late 60s/early 70s when we would have 50,000 fans a game on consistently losing teams. We would still enjoy our Hawkeye gameday. Barta killed it. With consecutive years of clamping down on the fun.

If you want proof, look no further than Ames. Record ticket sales, for one of the worst teams in the country. Yet they still have fun with their game"day".

Alcohol sales would generate revenue, but this idea also has some costs.

Security has to be increased, both from patrolling the crowd to checking IDs at the point of sale.

Plus the waiting lines for the concessions and the bathrooms are already terrible - and would get a lot worse. I'm not even sure the stadium could handle this in its current configuration.

My vote would be to just ease up the needless tailgating restrictions and let the crowd do what it has always done....arrive at the game already loaded.

This way everyone who doesn't smuggle in a bota or a flask has 3 hours to sober up before driving home.

I'm pretty surprised in 2015 that they aren't... In a world that's all about money and giving the consumers what they want it really makes little sense that they don't. Is public relations the only reason they don't do it? Because there are colleges that do and every pro venue out there does so to say it cant be done "safetly" is just an excuse. Is that an athletic department decision or does that come from the top?
