Tyler Cook Says Decision to be Made About Future

Cook is for sure a nice player for Iowa. At the NBA level though his skill set is a dime a dozen. He can dunk. His mid-range game is okay. Although he led Iowa he doesn't rebound that well. I don't see any any skill where he is more than "just a guy" at the NBA level. Don't get me wrong, I love the kid at Iowa and hope he stays but at the PF position in the NBA nothing sticks out. Maybe he wants to transfer, if that is the case we will lose our most athletic guy, but I don't think he can't be replaced as far as a pure "basketball player" goes.

Really hoping Mom and Pops agree to keep making the drive from St. Louis to Iowa City and tell him he's better off staying in school, where he's at, than transferring to Columbia or heading off to Europe.

The stupid thing about going to Mizzou is that all the studs will be gone by the time he gets to play. By that time, Iowa will be really good. Mizzou will be okay. But I think Iowa will be better.

He is not an NBA guy. Not now. I dont think his D is NBA level (I know, laugh, but he gets blown by a lot in college). He isnt a prototypical 4. He is more a 3 I think. But doesnt have the outside game to do that. He is a tweener. And those rarely succeed in the NBA.

He is dumb if he leaves. Unless it is for Europe. He would do pretty well there.

Cook is the best player on the team. Fran can certainly not afford to lose him. Unless he is the root of chemistry problems holding the team back from gelling then Fran absolutely must find a way to keep him here. If he wants to go to the NBA he owes it to himself to have a successful college season to ride out on. For fond memories sake alone. Fran must convince TC of this or he is failing this program yet again.

The pitch is simple. I mean you don't think Cook had envisioned playing in the NCAA tournament? You tell him 1 more year. Promise him the tournament and then deliver. Pretty simple stuff.

If Tyler Cook transfers to another school well then I will most likely go Hiroshima in my living room.
He’s gone.

This. Cook isn’t even close to G-League material. You guys suggesting playing pro at any level in the US are in left field. Look at the better players who’ve struggled in Europe and compare them to Cook. He’s not there.
IDK man. If Woodbury can play in the G league, I think Cook can do it. I don't Cook is ready for the NBA, but he's not as bad as you make him out to be.

I wonder about his grades...if he has been attending class? (not that it is necessary in college BB or FB)

I'm assuming it's no secret on the team that he feels this way. That explains a lot this season. I put the odds of him coming back at about 5% after those comments.

I may get laughed at, but Garza was the best player as the season went on after the Purdue game. Cook can dunk, like a beast. But, he has no outside shot, he sucks at free throws & he's not a good ball handler. His only great shooting game is if he's two feet from the basket. It's laughable that some poster on here made a thread about how Cook is the best player he's ever seen in Iowa in like 55 years, what a joke! Also, how many games did Cook not even show up this year? Many times he looked like a zombie out on the court. He was just atrocious at Minnesota a few weeks ago.

He has improved his game, but not to NBA developmental league level. I don't watch the NBA much but know guys that can't shoot or handle the rock or rack up double-digit rebounds or play killer D, don't do well in the league. If he wants to play in France, Turkey, or the D- league, he's making the right choice. Sitting out a year is the kind of torture that most players can't take. We got a transfer cause he got behind a freshman starter and Wisconsin high school legend. Cook is a starter. I think he either doesn't believe in his teammates or the coach.

Don't kid yourself. He made huge strides this year...major. Have you noticed the physicality going to the basket and initiating the contact...that's new and he's a bruiser. He also has really improved his handle. He can take the ball through traffic and that's only going to get better. The 15-18 foot jumper is coming along too...it's not there...but it's much much better than last year. He needs work defensively...but that's all desire and coaching for someone with his athleticism...and he improved greatly.

This is a major loss to this program. My guess is that he looked around him and he thought...do we have what it takes to battle the best teams in the country right now. I'm sure he knew the answer.

Exactly right!!! Why is it that when there are rumors of a player leaving people want to immediately bad mouth them? Fans can be stupid and selfish. He family traveling to watch each game. That's a hardship on any family. If he played closer to home it would lift a huge burden off of his family. Plus, could the team he plays for be much worse than where he is?

If he can get drafted into the NBA more power and MONEY to him and his family. I would be very happy for them all. I of course am selfish and want him to stay. Especially after this last game. They showed some fight and potential. Just think what might have happened in this game if we had another guard to play next to JBo who can shoot from the outside to help take some heat off of JBo. We would have won tonight if that guard existed. Well we are all being told that we have a guard coming in that can really light it up. You never know what a difference that can make.

Also there is some dead weight on this team. At the end of next season a lot of that dead weight will be gone. Players who don't seem to really bring much offense or defense to this team. A wing man, a guard, and a forward. I am sure everyone knows the three I am talking about without having to call them out by name. I personally would be happy to see the guard leave on his own now so Fran could go try to pick up a JUCO guard somewhere that might help out. If Cook does leave and no one else does then I would then use that scholarship on looking for a guard as we just don't have that guard with explosive speed that has the ability to break away on a fast break and take it to the rim. Several times today against Michigan I saw the obvious fast breaks that weren't taken advantage of because we don't have that break away speed. So the ball was deliberately slowed up and pulled back out at the top of the key to be passed around. That's not a knock on our guard as he could be playing on a final four team at the two position. He is an incredible shooter and passer. Unfortunately you just can't teach speed. A player may learn to try to compensate on defense by utilizing the skill of anticipation but that only gets you so far as some times you are going to get burnt.

I (like most) believe Cook is the best player on the team. However, if he leaves and if(this is a big if) we can use his scholarship to get an athletic wing who can shoot decently or real point guard, Iowa would probably win more games next year. In my opinion, Kreiner would be an above average Big Ten post player if he can get more consistent minutes.

I hope Tyler stays; he could help make Iowa a better team next year. But I’d be much more concerned if Garza, Bohannon or Kriener were talking about leaving.

i think garza is good, no doubt about that. but with no Cook on the floor, garza get's double-teamed and he isn't ready to deal with that yet.
