Yeah, I might avoid a Vashon kid at this point.
Tony Irons is his HS coach. He is the son of Floyd Irons, who also coached at Vashon.
Floyd Irons was as corrupt as they come. Ended up going to jail for paying for players to move near the school.
He was the godfather of St. Louis basketball. And not in the cool religious way.
Vashon was stripped of 3 state titles because of Floyd.

Another story from a guy I know close to Clemson athletics.
"A young PG from SC who was moved to a prep school. And sold to a Big 12 program. The kid threatened to not enroll at said school and said he dreamed of playing for Clemson. His AAU coach flew a chartered private jet to town, and told Coach Brownell his "client" wanted to come to Clemson. The going price was $200k up front plus half of any coach contract incentives for winning. Plus he'd have to pay back all the prep school and private housing costs amassed over the last 12 months. He laid the $200k check on his desk so he could see it. The kid played in the Big 12. Wasnt even a starter I dont believe."

Crazy

Maybe Iowa should switch to Converse. Just go for the Black Chuck Taylor model and separate yourself from the noise.
I don't know if you remember And1 shoes, but they're making a comeback.

It's good to be a Hawkeye. I am very confident the Hawks are nowhere near this burning trash heap.

I was thinking it would be hilarious if bo Ryan and Wisconsin went down in flames and then it dawned on me that no shoe company is funneling money to a bunch of dorky looking white kids

Millions/Billions of dollars at stake...

Ends justify the means culture...

Vulnerable but talented HS BB players, many who come from poverty...

Families of these players who think it is "unfair" that shoe companies and colleges make millions while their children play for peanuts.

NCAA with a history of "overlooking" high caliber money-making programs...($$$ in the till for NCAA)

Coaches and staffs who make more $$$ than almost anyone else on campus.

Athletic departments which are more "powerful" than anyone else on campus.

Head coaches who know they need to "win"...

Head coaches who hire people who can "do what needs to be done"...allowing success plus "deniability" when the bullets start to fly.

Alumni with $$$$$ who want to "help" behind the scenes, who love to feel important and needed by the athletic staffs.

"Professionals" on the street connected to the players and families through "professional AAU circuits, etc." Agents who can get it done...

Shoe companies who also know how to "do it" to get the players.

Russian involvement of course...

Cesspool long in the making...there you have it.

Guys, I've thought he was a little nuts all along...but now realize he is pure genius! Holy Cow. All the competition will be in trouble and guess who will take over as the next BIG (BALLER) BRAND! Buy Stock Now!

Heard a Jay Bilas interview yesterday and he basically said it all. There will be shockwaves around college bball for a bit, but nothing will change. There's billions of dollars involved in college basketball and all of these schools are signing massive contracts with these apparel companies. When that much money is involved there's too much at stake for anything to change.

The only options are to either let the players sign with agents out of high school (like baseball players do) or let the players make money off their likeness. Let adidas and Nike sponsor these athletes right out of high school if they're good enough. Right now Nike and Adidas have to sign partnerships with schools in order to force athletes to wear their gear. if you let the athlete get their own shoe deal right away, it takes away the partnerships and corruption with the schools.

But you can see why the schools and the NCAA would fight this to the death. It takes millions away from the schools and puts it into the player's pockets

I'm not a huge fan of Bilas....good basketball commentator, poor "social commentator" in my opinion. But he is a lawyer, so that's what probably drives that.

The main thing that drives the cesspool that is college basketball rather than college football is because the NCAA makes BILLIONS off of the NCAA tournament, so they have an absolute vested interest in making sure the money making programs in basketball don't get nailed. That's why you see way more high profile teams in college football getting nailed with violations than you do high profile college basketball teams. The bowl games and playoff aren't affiliated with the NCAA, so the NCAA doesn't make money from them.

You're 100% right about the NCAA tournament. Its big big business.

However, basketball players can go to college for 1 season and then go pro, where football players have to stay in college for 3 years and develop. Almost everyone knows when a high school kid is going to be a one and done. The same isn't true for football... you dont really know who the next big football star is until they have already signed with a school and played for a year or two.

How many endorsements does Tom Brady or Odell Beckham get compared to Lebron James or Steph Curry? Basketball players are more recognizable, they have longer careers, they don't wear helmets, the don't get hurt as much, there are less players per team, they play both offense and defense so are on the field (court) more often, etc. They're a lot more marketable

Because of all these factors, the high profile high school basketball players are infinitely more valuable to a shoe company or a financial adviser than a football player. So that brings a lot more corruption.

The most obvious answer, IMO, is letting kids skip college completely. That one isnt on the NCAA as much as it is on the NBA trying to protect themselves financially from busts. Just allow the kids to go from high school straight to the G-league and most of this stuff goes away.

Make it like baseball where you can either go pro right out of high school or if you go to college you have to stay there for at least 3 years. That would eliminate one and dones in college and improve the sport all around.

Totally agree with this. Let the few kids who get drafted out of high school go. If the NBA is nervous they aren't ready, put them in the G League for a year after being drafted and make them take mandatory classes throughout the season such as dealing with media, traveling safely, financial investments etc. Much of it boils down the the NBA owners not wanting to risk drafting a high school player and losing a big investment if they don't pan out, they basically want the colleges to keep them a year to watch them almost like a tryout. I say too bad, if your scouting department sucks and you draft a kid who doesn't pan out its on you. Just don't draft High School players if that worries you.
Another benefit is a few more kids who really want to go to college get scholarships out of it instead of these few guys who jut go to school to play basketball and don't even attend class. It makes no sense in this country for us to tell someone they can't be paid for their talent when someone is willing to pay them, so let them go pro.

Honestly... I am not. Every camp that's held - everywhere, be it Nike or Adidas or U/A or what... when a AAU or HS team goes to it, there's money exchanged. Just to assume that Iowa has absolutely no assistant coaches involved is in any way might be wishful thinking. Not saying that there is, but this is across the board and every school is competing and trying to win and doing exactly what their peers are doing.... I wouldn't at all feel confident or sure on anything at this point, but not worried too much either as I think EVERY single school in the country is guilty in some way of what's happening across the board in college hoops

I would agree with you if Alford was still coaching us. But I have as close to 100% confidence in Fran and his staff that a guy can have.

Yes they would, the new Cheese Taylor's from Converse:cool:

I don't think people really are grasping what this is. It's across the board. It's Nike schools, it's Reebok schools, it's Adidas schools. It's schools with losing records, schools with winning records. Schools with great recruiting classes, schools with sub par classes. It probably, in some way, involves every coaching staff in America. How much? That I don't know... but I think it's incredibly naive to believe that Fran, his assistants and the school doesn't know how the game works and aren't doing exactly what EVERY other school in the country is. These first schools getting popped are just the start. Will it change anything? I dunno? Will it result in every school getting sanctioned? I don't know. I am not saying IOWA is dirty... I am saying EVERYONE is.

I understand exactly what's going on with these charges. And I think it's naive to believe that EVERY coach and program in America is involved. That's a bit much in the hyperbole department.
