Comp Science Major with a Informatics minor ....I know programing languages and how much coding it takes to make these sites ....and yes I think twitter is dumb and a complete knockoff of facebook. sorry haha.

Twitter is nothing like Facebook.
In fact, Facebook started doing the "@username" years after Twitter made it famous.
If people use Twitter to primarily talk about what they are doing, then you don't have to follow them. I use it for so many different things - new music, opinions on movies, talking about beer, and (of course) Hawkeye and other sports.
It has revolutionized the way people and organizations disseminate information.
Twitter is great for information and for quick interactions with people.
Facebook is more to keep in touch with your friends and family via pics, videos, etc... and you can also waste your time on stupid Facebook apps if you want, as well. Two different applications for two different applications.

Not entirely. I correspond with many different people all over the world via Twitter on "non-media" stuff. Those same people aren't my Facebook friends.

I also find it humorous (and a bit hypocritical) that message board users have poor things to say about Twitter. It's pretty much the same concept, but a different medium.

It isn't about finding out if some celeb is out to dinner, it is about following informative sources and getting all of your news in a thread that take 1 min to read. Ideal news source if you follow CREDIBLE people and sites.

It's not the exact same thing. Both sites disseminate information, but this site does so while fostering engaging conversations.
Twitter and 160 characters doesn't get that done for me.

To the college-aged world, I would probably agree but I don't think you're right about the "rest" of the world. This isn't a knock on your opinion, because many companies (including my own) leverage fb as a primary tool for college recruiting.
Twitter has quite a bit more effective usage than just the media, it just depends on your individual interests or professional goals.
