Now granted QB isn't the only reason we lost or even the largest reason to Purdue so I'm prefacing my takes on this with that. Oline playcalling and Defense overall all were equally as bad. However we've been able to hide a mediocre QB up to this point because our D had been just so so good. Not just with holding opponents down with points but with field position due to TOs and special teams.
Once a team doesn't turn it over against us and forces us to go the length of the field more often we were going to be in trouble. That's a part of what played out here. The last couple picks I'm not going to blast Petras for too much cause game was already long over and that was pretty much desperation mode. But his overall play and lack of getting rid of the ball to avoid sacks just kills an offense. Since he has little pocket mobility/awareness (Stanley was significantly better at it and I don't think anyone woulda called him great at it) it just puts us in a box. He has to have a clean pocket with 1st or 2nd read be open on time for him to even have much of a chance at making a positive play happen. We all know football doesn't work that way a lot of the time. I know the Oline sucks. They hardly even slowed down their Dline some of the time. But that's where BF comes in. He's got to be smarter with how he calls a game knowing that. It's on him to help hide a limited upside QB and get the most out of him.
I imagine there's going to be a lot of tinkering goin on during this bye week. At least I hope so. I know we aren't changing Qbs. For those wishing for that I really hope you're wrong. Because our backups from what little we've seen aren't remotely ready. (which is unfortunate and another topic all together) You'd think with 2 other QBs that have been in the program for multiple seasons now that wouldn't be the case. But it is. So it's ride or die with Petras and BF. Hopefully they can find a way to get us on track. Wisky for as bad as they've looked we sure as hell can't look at them (or most games we have left) as a gimmie.
