Trouble in River City

Is Frost really going to get better athletes to Nebraska, has that really been the problem? Nebraska has brought in several good California athletes, that hasn't been their issue. It is being stout at the LOS that Nebraska has been awful at, ever since Suh left. Is Frost some sort of in the trenches guru? If not, I don't they are all of a sudden Wisconsin winning 10+ a year and the division every year.
This is correct. They have decent/good skill position players. Their issue is that they can't block and they stop no one on defense and that starts with their D-Line. Will be interesting to see how this is addressed with Frost and how much they can get back to being solid along the lines.

I came away from the Iowa vs Nebraska game thinking that is the softest team I have ever seen. Fluffy soft. That doesn't work in the BIG.

I expect Frost will improve Nebraska noticeably (assuming he ends up there), but I hardly think it's panic time. It's not a zero sum game. Iowa has had some of their best season under KFz while Nebraska was also having success.
No doubt Frost would be more likely to keep a guy like Noah Fant "at home", but I doubt he's suddenly going be scooping all the recruits Iowa wants. I'm also not so sure he's going to convince some of the most talented Florida guys to move to Lincoln, NE when they have the option of Florida, Florida St, Miami etc.

I'm not sure what Nebraska's hire has to do with Iowa. They were going to hire a new coach. So they hire Scott Frost. Maybe he'll be a good coach, maybe he won't. I'm not sure how Iowa is to alter what they're doing simply because Nebraska has a new coach, quickly jump in and hire Scott Frost from under Nebraska?

I am not too sure about ISU returning a seasoned team next year. They have some returners but lose a fair amount of talent as well. I know Lazard and Murdock are gone at wide receiver and they aren't exactly sure who their QB is going to be. That QB will also have his blind side protected by a new LT as Campos is out. They also lose their starting and backup LG. On defense they lose a starter end in Wagonner, a starting DT in Trent, both safeties and their heart and soul of the D Joel Lanning at MLB. On special teams both punt returners Lazard and Ryen are gone as well as their punter Colin Downing and Place Kicker Garret Owens.

If that is all true I am just shaking my head as I am assuming the things said by Deuce on the podcast were accurate. He made it sound like they have a lot coming back and that they should be pretty good. That it would be smart for their head coach to stay there and build up his reputation and then move to a school with an established recruiting base. He even suggested the Ohio State job when the current coach retires.

On another note it is going to take time for our new linebackers to get up to speed. It is one of the skilled positions that is easier to learn but still takes time. Similar with the running back positions that will be open but there is a lot more talent the goes into the running back position. You can’t teach speed and elusiveness. I do like the quickness of one of our younger running backs who briefly ran a few plays one game. I can’t remember his name but man did he look quick going through the line. Once Doyle gets done with him he could be something really special. I pointed out how special Green was going to be when he was just a freshmen. I wish I could remember his name but dare I say his quickness reminded of a pretty good running back nick named “Sweetness” that played for da bears. I hope we get to see more of him.

All he has to do is instill a fighting spirit, toughness and avoid turn overs and Nebraska will be right in it with Northwestern and Iowa for #2 in the B1G West. They'll be 8/9 win team on that alone

Really that is not a big leap at all - very doable.

Of course they expect more than that and more than that consistently.

Bo Pellini went 67-27 in 8 seasons at Nebraska and got fired after a 9-3 season. The fans wanted his head for that performance. Unless they put up continuous 11 or 12 win seasons, no coach will ever satisfy Nebraska fans. You'll get paid if you take that job but know that you'll be reviled by the fans and fired in a few years even if you win.

I'd imagine you mean Ivory Kelly Martin? He is definitely a fast guy and runs well! I think Toren Young may be more the bruiser type with IKM being the speed and moves kind of guy. Yea just overall it is a bit of jumping the gun to say Iowa State will be a seasoned team which makes it feel like deuce made a blind statement or something! On the Nebraska topic, hell Scott Frosty hasn't even been named the coach yet and if he is he isn't going to walk in there and be Tom Osbourne with Eric Crouch snapping the reigns! It is a whole different world in terms of recruiting and the game with scholarship limitations and more/better options school wise than it was back in the 70s/80s/90s! The UCF American Athletic Conference is far from some power conference and looks full of plenty of cupcakes! The UCF non conference is a complete joke IMO.

That Oregon offense he runs isn't going to work in the B1G West....it just won't. And being an offensive guy, his biggest hurdle will be the defense and that ain't gonna get fixed overnight. Especially because in 2 years they've gone from a 4-3 to a 3-4 and didn't play either of those schemes worth a shit. That'll be a lot to ask those guys to go back to a 4-3, which is what I assume will happen.

I'm interested to see how he does, but I'm not scared in the least....Nebraska is becoming Minnesota....a once dominant midwest program that's now relegated to being average, at best....

river city's been in trouble for years, in fact they're being held for ransom

Frost might get Nebraska back to being 8/9 win program with an occasional run at the West division title but they will never be that dominate football program like they were in the 70s/80s/90s again.

This probably impacts Iowa State more than Iowa in terms of recruiting.
So the coaching carousel keeps on spinning because 8-9 wins just won't cut it! Can't wait for the next meltdown!

During the 70s' 80's and 90's Nebby had some of the greatest teams of all time. Nobody will ever have teams like that again, because schollies are limited and more trends get on t.v.

However, Nebraska with Frost will win a title. I'm almost certain of it. He does buying but even, wherever he goes. He might have trouble in big games, we saw some of that at Oregon, but if he can turn a doormat program into a running powerhouse, imagine what he's gong to do at the best rushing school of all time.

Those kids you might convince to come North because they didn’t get offers from the big 3.........now go to Central Florida or South Florida.

ISU returns 11 honorable mention or better conference players. The QB will be Park, Noland, or Kempt who is trying to get a 6th year. Butler, Eaton, and Jones return at WR who have been good. Campos will be trying for a 6th year and the starting LG was going to be Oge before the season started but he got hurt. The line shoudl be improved. The starting DT was actually Lima who is better than Trent but had nagging injuries. The big losses are Lanning, and the safeties. Those will be really tough to replace but ISU fans should expect a team just as good next year.

Maybe if Frost brings back steroids, moves back to the Big 8, lowers academic standards even further, allows felons to play, ramps up NCAA violations and pays players. Other than that, Nebraska has no advantage over Iowa.

I'm not so sure the Chip Kelly Oregon offense wouldn't work in the Big Ten. It's 65% run. However, Nebraska's biggest problem has been defense.

After the disastrous season they went through this year and Frost being a former player I can see Nebraska and their fans giving him a much longer leash. This 4-8 season has humbled them, it's their worst season since 1961 and they gave Bo Pelini 6 years after Bill Callahan led them to a 5-7 season back in 2007.
