Transfers??

But it has everything to do with wasting a scholarship that could be used on another player who would help the team.

Are you worried about the kid being butt hurt or what's good for the team? Big picture here.

Exactly.

IMO this is between Connor & Fran - whatever they decide on (if they even discuss it) is fine, but I think people are making way too much out of this. I'm not sure how much difference it makes whether he is technically on scholarship, or a walk-on with his way being paid by his dad.

Guess if it were me, and my dad said "Hey, I can pay your way so we can use the scholarship on an additional player. What do you think?" I'd be cool with it. Especially if the additional player improves the team I'd be playing on. Getting playing time and being on a good team would be far more important to me than exactly HOW my ride was being paid for, either privately or via scholly.

As for "Well, we don't play 13 players anyway..", yes that's true, but that's also operating under the assumption that the extra scholarship goes to a player who ends up at the end of the bench. Just maybe you can snag a player that ends up a starter, or at least plays meaningful minutes off the bench.

There is virtually no chance this will be an issue IMO. It's hard enough to keep 13 scholarship players happy. This year we had 14 players with Baer but red shirted 2 and 1 went down with an injury. And no one is complaining this year because so many minutes are up for grabs next year.

Let's say Fran pays Connor's way. And let's say we continue to add scholarship players and don't give Baer a scholarship. We then have 15 D-1 players and only 200 minutes of playing time per game. I think it's a given at least 2 guys move on...leaving a scholarship for the rest.

The "he can afford it" argument is obnoxious, IMO. I don't like anyone telling me how I should spend my money.

I agree. That's why when I mention the idea of not giving Connor or Patrick a scholarship I've suggested giving Fran a bump in pay to account for the cost of their education. It doesn't matter how much money he makes. He shouldn't have to make less because of a situation like this. His kids have clearly worked their ***** off to earn the right to be a scholarship athlete. Make no mistake about it. They are scholarship athletes. If Iowa doesn't take them another good D1 program would. If they came to Iowa as walk-ons Fran should be reimbursed for that somehow.

I don't give two sh*ts how Francis McCaffery spends a dime and I never told anyone how to spend his money. I am, however, a fan of this basketball program and if someone does something that I think would waste a scholarship I am free to think its stupid.

Save the "don't tread on me" stuff for people who are treading on you.

Yes but the best of 15 players is going to be better than the best of 14 players. As far as percentages go.

I'll be very disappointed if either of Fran's kids pay their own way. They could go anywhere in the country for free, why would they pay to go to Iowa? It's not like we use all 13 ships as it is, I don't know why we would need 14 players worthy of one at the expense of Fran. Unless that what HE wants to do... but I hope he doesn't. Transfers happen a lot of time due to roster management...ie, the writing on the wall that is laid out for them by the coaching staff. I don't think Iowa is anywhere near short on scholarships.

I mean Fran's in full control to free up scholarships for his own team. At the end of the day, it will be his choice. I'll support whatever decision he decides to make.

Hopefully some of the new recruits pan out, the Hawks need a couple players to step up next year if they want to make another NCAA tournament.

Just curious - do you feel the same for a basketball player whose parents are wealthy? Should Steph Curry have had a scholarship in college since his dad Del made over 19 million dollars in the NBA? If any of the incoming freshman for Iowa have wealthy parents, should they also walk on?

If I was extremely wealthy I would pay my way for my son to walk on so the team could be better.

I got about halfway through the thread before I got tired of the Fran scholarship argument. If I were Fran I would pay the small amount for my kids to be in school and give those scholarships to other good players. This would be to make my job easier and better. The likely-hood of Iowa making a deeper run in the tourney or just having a better season is higher the more scholarship players you have. If this happens, Fran will get more bonuses and likely better job security.

To the original point. I would be happy if so long as the kids are happy with their decisions. I don't understand why everyone wants someone gone. Who is to say we would get anyone better than who we have? Give the players some time to see how things shake out. I have fond memories of knockdown 3-point shooters, and honestly, I don't remember all of them being "athletic".

What's extremely wealthy? Where is the line? Would you do the same if your child got a music scholarship? Should a kid with wealthy parents turn down an academic scholarship so another smart kid could go to that college?

I'm not sure having 14 scholarship-worthy players is that much of a benefit over 13 scholarship-worthy players. There are only so many ways to slice up the playing time pie. Having 14 players makes it a little more likely that fran can't keep everyone happy and maybe loses a player or 2 to transfer who he might really want later on.

i find this argument more than a little ironic because part of the blame for the collapse 2 years ago was that fran was so committed to playing 10-11 players per game and that it caused issues amongst the players, and most fans wanted him to tighten the rotation to 8-9 players instead.

Everything i've heard tells me that both of fran's kids are highly thought of recruits, and weren't given scholarships out of familial loyalty. if they decide to walk on and have fran pay his son's ways, awesome. otherwise, they sound like guys worthy of a scholarship no matter what their last name is.

another point to me is that there will be added pressure on both father and son, both from the rest of the team and the fanbase, not to show favoritism, which can cause problems also. i think putting him on scholarship is a subtle statement that he will be treated no differently from any other player.

Extremely wealthy is whatever money amount I had that made it worth it to me. I would not do the same with a music scholarship because there would be no benifit for me. Unless my kid asked me to so they could give the scholarship to someone else to make the music team better. Is there even a music team? I don't know.

I would have to be off the charts wealthy to give up my kids academic scholarship for someone else to have. But if I was, and the thought crossed my mind, I would maybe do that gesture for someone else.

See, that's the thing. Wealthy is different for everyone. You know why the extremely wealthy keep making money? Because they never think they have enough. So, if their child has earned something, they are not automatically going to turn it down out of the kindness of their heart in many cases.

Yes, colleges have scholarships for band, orchestra, etc. They have scholarships for academics. If someone has done the work to get the scholarship, I don't see why their parents wealth enters into the equation. Isn't that the same as a participation trophy? Shouldn't everyone get a scholarship then?

What would there be no benefit for you if your kid got a scholarship for music instead of sports?

All I said was if I was wealthy I would pay my kid's way so the coach could use the scholarship to bring in another player. It would be worth it to me to to make the team better. It wouldn't even cross my mind to do it for anything other than a sport I care about. If my kid brought it to my attention and they wanted it for some reason, I would weigh the options and decide if it was worth it. Paying my kid's way onto the basketball team would be no different than donating money to the university, which I would do anyway.

Fair enough. I actually think Fran will get Connor (and/or Patrick) to walk on if he can get another player. Even Steve Alford did that with Bryce at UCLA. Of course, it didn't matter this year.

My point is, I think as a parent, I would care if I was improving the basketball team, or the orchestra, or the band, or the debate team. And, you are correct. It's not much different than donating to the university, except that you are directly effecting your child's team. Makes sense to me.
