Transfers??

I'll be very disappointed if either of Fran's kids pay their own way. They could go anywhere in the country for free, why would they pay to go to Iowa? It's not like we use all 13 ships as it is, I don't know why we would need 14 players worthy of one at the expense of Fran. Unless that what HE wants to do... but I hope he doesn't. Transfers happen a lot of time due to roster management...ie, the writing on the wall that is laid out for them by the coaching staff. I don't think Iowa is anywhere near short on scholarships.

I can think of a MILLION reaON. Save the scollies for gifted athletes who come from families whose only way of sending kids to school is through scholarships.

Ellingson had a tough go of it this year. Doesn't mean he doesn't have talent or can't play. Just means he needs more time to figure it out. I hope he stays and because the shooter Fran thinks he can be. Guys get better. Peter Jok went from 36% last season to 43% this season and took a lot more shots this year.
I watched Fleming shoot about 100 shots in the practice facility this year. The dude was unbelievable. So I like him too. But it's one thing to shoot over chairs, and it's another doing it with BIG defenses in your face. Hopefully he figures it out too.

Ellingson and Fleming will definitely be battling each other for time. I could see one of them xfer. I want the best one to stay, whomever that is. Moss and Hutton will surprise folks. I personally believe Moss RS because he just wasn't going to get minutes in front of Jok this year and now, he can understudy next season and be the man for 3 seasons. That's the "plan" I see, anyway. Hutton, might have been more a case of wanting to stagger the scholly's a bit and there just really wasn't a place for him to get minutes. He needs to work on his shooting and since he's projected as a 3 or 4, he wasn't going to play in front of Jok or JU either.

I really like Fleming. I hope he does'nt leave. He will be a player before he is done.
Flemming made a better pull move jumper in lane in scrub time vs. Nova than MG made in four years.
He will help because he can score the ball and get his own shot. I hope.

I hope they all stay. Guys get hurt all of the time. A RS is often beneficial. I have no idea why everyone wants Ellingson to leave and is so hopeful Fleming stays. Ellingson played ahead of Fleming and it seems just about everyone wants Ellingson gone...not me.

This ^^^^. Fran saw something in Ellingson to give him the minutes over Fleming. This was his 1st year on the floor, give him time to improve before throwing him off campus.

I respect your posts and basketball knowledge but I don't see how you can't see the potential for Fleming is way more than Ellingson. I just don't see what you see in Ellingson. He doesn't have D1 athleticism so even if he is a great shooter, I'm he can't get the shots.... and from what I've seen this year, even when he did get the shots, he didn't knock them down.

I watched Fleming last year when he played for Oak Hill...and I was concerned about his defense then. Then I didn't think he played well defensively in his limited playing time during the non conference season.

Ellingson looks like a high school kid to me. I think he has a high basketball IQ. But he needs to transform his body and fill out a bit. Jok did this between last year and this year. And I think he is as athletic as Fleming. But he doesn't have the physical build...yet.

Both guys have potential IMO bit I'm not ready to declare Fleming the better player. It reminds me of wanting the backup QB to play. He isn't necessarily better but the starter isn't what everyone had hoped.

I also think there are minutes for both of them when Jok is gone if they develop. If anyone is going to leave I think it will be next season not now. Did I answer your question?

It's really easy to spend other peoples money, I know. I think Fran gives quite a bit to the University of Iowa and the Iowa City community as it is and to expect him to pay the way for his kids is ridiculous. Again from the aspect of....they could get a full ride anywhere in the country including many schools with better basketball programs and education, they earned the scholarship with play just like everyone else who did (it does still mean something) and there isn't playing time for 13 scholarships as it is. Connor Mac is not a walk on, why because of who his dad is would he do that?

Now on the flip side... if Fran sees it as an advantage (which I agree it would be) and WANTS to do it... I am ok with it. I just don't think fans or the U of I should expect it.

Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater; jeebus.

I get what you're saying and all but for god's sake let's at least try to be pragmatic about it. All 4 years worth of tuition would be less than 5% of Fran's yearly salary, yet you'd exclude another less fortunate and potentially better player at his expense? Fran makes more than that in interest every year.

Scholarships aren't intended to be symbolic Scooby snacks. They are there to encourage players to come play ball who in most cases wouldn't be able to afford it. I realize two rubes like you and me talking on a message board have zero impact on what McCaffery does with his money, but if we're going to go through the thought experiment at least be reasonable.

We must have at least two people transferring out since Fran is still recruiting a 2016 guard that decommitted from UNLV and he's saving one for Baer

If scholarships were unlimited you'd have a point. But they are not. It doesn't matter if they are all used or not, it still takes one away from the program that could be potentially be used on someone who would benefit from it.

I don't want to root for any specific person to transfer out, they all came here wanting to be Hawkeyes but attrition does happen. I mentioned this in another thread that this senior class once had Kyle Meyer and Pat Ingram, they both moved on when it was obvious Iowa was not a good fit for them. The biggest sign the writing was on the wall was when Baer, a non scholarship player, moved past these other players for playing time. Baer now deserves a scholarship, I would be stunned if no one transferred out.

ok... well, I guess I must be wrong on this and cause Fran is rich we should expect Fran to pay the way for his kids. I mean, it's the least he can do cause Iowa pays him so well and it's just a drop in the hat for him. It just seems wrong to me IMO when they could go literally any where else for free. We should make all rich kids pay their way even if they've earned it I suppose.

Christian Vital. He tweeted last night that Fran called him and some others were reporting Iowa is recruiting him so we must have at least two people leaving

It appears Louisville and Alabama are both in on him as well. We could use another point guard to compete with Williams/Bohanon.

Just to stay in perspective, this is a 3 star 2017 kid we're talking about here who's not even in the top 100 recruits; it's not like he's going to go hop right on the Kansas squad. If he weren't McCaffery's kid we wouldn't even be having this conversation. You're acting like he's Carmelo Anthony or something.

If Christian Vital comes to Iowa to play guard alongside Christian Williams we'd really have a Christian revival around here.

If Fran pays his way, he'll be going to Iowa for free.

As for Fran, yeah, guess he'd have to cough up the cost of a college education, but with his salary, I think he could afford to send his kid to the UofI. We're not talking Harvard, here.

Would Fran not be paying for his kids' college educations anyway, whether or not they play sports? I don't know the answer to that, just throwing it out there.

Besides, if Fran gets Connor at Iowa without using a scholly, and can use said scholly on an additional good player, then that only helps his own cause as a coach with a deeper roster.

Win-win for everyone, IMO. Connor gets his way paid, and Fran gets an extra player. You act like Connor M would be getting shafted somehow. Now if he DID truly have to pay his own way, then different story.

I think Fran should pay for his sons to come here and the University should give Fran a raise for the exact dollar amount of his tuition.

Only thing I wonder - does Fran paying the way count as a recruiting violation of some sort? Nobody has mentioned that so I assume it's not, but wondered if that is considered the same as paying players..
